Svip
Several news outlets are reporting of a possible military coup d'état in Turkey. The Telegraph has a live feed and CBC reports that Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said it was a coup. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says a group within the military engaged in an attempted coup. Yildirim told NTV television: "it is correct that there was an attempt." Yildirim didn't provide details, but said Turkey would never allow any "initiative that would interrupt democracy." Earlier, military jets were heard flying over the capital, Ankara. Media reports said ambulances were seen in front of the Turkey's military headquarters. Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge were both closed on Friday, local television channels reported. Apparently, the military moved in after sunset, closed several bridges in Istanbul and military aircraft are flying low in Ankara. I was a Junk
Very interesting. Knew government was very unpopular in Turkey but this certainly seems a bit sudden. We'll see what happens i guess.
Svip
Reports indicate that the military got state TV TRT which is reportedly off the air. And supposedly they are to make an announcement soon. A statement by the Turkish armed forces stated that they got the government.

I was surprised at seeing 21st century dates. Honest. What do the majority citizens of Turkey want? Pardon my land locked US ignorance. Svip
What do the majority citizens of Turkey want? Pardon my land locked US ignorance. Well, Erdogan have been elected in several elections with clear majorities. Although he is widely despised by the people who do not vote for him. And a lot of people who do vote for him don't actually like him, but fear for their security. They think he is the only to protect them against the recent stream of terror attacks. But in the case of a military coup, it doesn't really matter what the people want.

But doesn't a coup need some organized structure and leadership. Does the military hate the Erdogan too? Educate me damnit. Svip
But in the case of a military coup, it doesn't really matter what the people want. True. But doesn't a coup need some organized structure and leadership. Does the military hate the Erdogan too? Educate me damnit. Difficult to say. Military officials have a tendency not to make public statements. But it is likely to be Erdogan's anti-secularism ways. Erdogan's religious party have over the past decade slowly been introducing anti-secularist laws or rather abolish the secularist laws that have shaped modern Turkey after the end of the Ottoman Empire. It is likely the military have not approved of these changes. Moreover, Erdogan's handling of the civil war in Syria (which has spilled over into Turkey), the PKK and the downing of a Russian jet may also have helped breaking the relations between the government and the military. But again, I am only speculating. Edited July 15, 2016 by Svip trip, Moth and acmilano

Svip
State TV TRT channel says the country is now under the control of a "peace council" that will ensure the safety of the population. It states that democratic and secular rule of law has been eroded by the Erdogan government. Source. It appears I may have been right about the secularism. But that seems to be a common position according to analysis I've been reading.

Abel.
Crazy. Seemingly out of the blue but it's been right under the surface for a while. Erdogan's not exactly uniformly liked. http://www.timesofisrael.com/military-aircraft-seen-in-skies-of-ankara-istanbul-bridges-closed/ Turkish PM says elements in military are attempting a coup and will pay ‘highest price’; aircraft seen in skies of Ankara, Istanbul bridges closed and top general said taken hostage I wonder how ISIS will react to this. Will they be able to take advantage of the chaos or will they be dismayed to see the end of Erdogan? Edited July 15, 2016 by Failure
