What if all races had (I'm not entirely sure if this is a feature in other games, so I'll give it my own name) selective non-contact?

Basically, if you are several places behind a player, then you're ghosted to them. So the player in 2nd place can still ram the player in 1st, but the player in 3rd can't ram the player in 1st.

My reasoning behind this is that the hypothetical player in 3rd can't possibly ram the player in 1st place anyway, unless he or she is going down the track backwards, or blocking paths, like this:

73x1mr.gif

(Thanks joel15cat, for the gif).

Players who like the thrill of PIT'ing people and ramming still get that, meanwhile those who just sit and set up roadblocks have their ability to troll removed.

I'm not even that passionate about racing if I'm honest, so I'll take a hands off approach to this thread and let people decided among themselves. To me though, this just seems like common sense. I can't think of any argument against this, personally.

Just turn contact off as a default setting and may the best driver win.

Agreed, just look at this:

That guy paid 20k to stay in a race doing nothing for 7 minutes.

Yes, or we just post lap times and see who is the best driver./sarcasm

I wouldn't say I was a serious racer either, more just semi-pro  I love racing, but what you've described above is the reason I don't race all the time.

It annoys the hell out of me. The guy in your gif is a race griefer, nothing more. There's absolutely no reason for him to be there other than to be a prick. IMO, that's the same as griefing.

There definately needs to be something other than the blanket non-contact option. I don't mind non-contact, but I have to admit, it's a bit dull lol. As I said in another thread, Destroy Last Place (DLP) is an excellent way to get rid of idiots like him^^. Races like Taxiing with a full lobby are a nightmare without DLP in force.

I understand your point about ghosting, but i think it's probably unworkable, mainly because of the way races start. Everyone is next to each other so technically everyone is ghosted to everyone else until such a point that a few break free from the pack, which would be handy for races like Congestion Charge., but it's pretty much the same as non-contact.

Personally I would like to see more weight to the cars so that getting pitted or hitting 'breakaway' objects don't have as much of an effect on your vehicle. I like your idea and the reason for putting it forward, but I think maybe the best way to deter drivers from constantly trying to pit you would be to implement a time sanction for making contact with another vehicle. I'm sure the game is capable of recognising a deliberate 'pit' attempt or a deliberate crash. Impose a 20 second penalty for every hit and the driver responsible can't win, anything more than a 2 minute total penalty and they're instantly disqualified.

I don't know what the best approach would be, but I totally understand your frustration. I would like to see something other than the basic non-contact option.

This is sensible and clever, much like most of your posts on this here forum, OP.

Join a racing crew or a general crew that also takes racing seriously.

Rockstar will never do this for regular races because non-contact is a thing and they think its good enough. For stunt races there's some crossover points which they intentionally put in there, so they want contact fully on.

Yep that's definately a way to go.

There are plenty of decent 'random' racers out there though. I've been in loads of races where the host and other players (on mics) have been adamant that any 'dirty' racers get kicked on the next race.

I prefer contact racing as non-contact has become incredibly dull; I see it as nothing more than hot lapping in a group. However, I think that the idea of penalties and disqualification as Tonguegirl suggested would work much better.

It's an interesting concept though, and I'd be in favour of anything to prevent arseholes from driving backwards and taking everyone out.

People who intentionally PIT other drivers are a cancer, and you're lucky to find 1 out of every 60 that doesn't do it these days. It's a shame, but I've burned out a bit on serious racing, so I don't think I could be in a racing crew. Perhaps if they eliminated pavement surfing, but that is an entirely different argument. :p

your mind is very very sparkly, even when you think YouCantThinkOfNew, but actually you do hihihi, this idea is brillant.

i dont race that much cause of things like seen in your gif. and joining a racing crew wouldn't work with me because i dont play that often anymore and and and i have my own fluffy crew.

sometimes if someone rams me i'd like to throw banana peel on him so he spins out like ui ui ui then throw another banana peel at him WHICH ACTUALLY COMES OUT OF HIS TV AND HIT EM IN THE FACE THEN GOING SLOWY DOWN ON HIM TO HIS CONTROLLER WHICH WILL TURN STICKY, GLUEY AND UNUSABLE AND HE CAN'T TAKE HIS HANDS OFF BECAUSE ITS LIKE GLUE AND AFTER TWO DAYS IT IT IT SMELLS THAT BAD HE CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE AND FINALLY HE TURNS INTO A ROTTEN BANANA HIMSELF!!!!!!! ok im fluffy again hihihi

This isn't a bad idea but it seems a little elaborate, and knowing how things go with GTA Online it probably would be very buggy. I'd prefer something where players who aren't actually racing are forcibly kicked (or moved to spectator mode). Basically anyone who isn't following the course and hitting checkpoints for a prolonged period of time.

Delete...Delete.....Delete.....Catch Up. There's no reason to be punished for avoiding all the idiot rammers, and actually racing, building a huge lead.

Penalized Intentional Ramming. I'm sure it would be extremely difficult to implement, but it might help deter some of the trolls, and butthurt drivers.

Auto DQ if driving the opposite way.

Auto DQ if driving the opposite way.

With the checkpoint hit recognition being dodgy recently, that wouldn't be practical.

Too much waiting around for that.

Got that right, I just mysteriously missed a checkpoint about 5 minutes ago. No idea how.

Let non-contact be an option for each player. We choose to be ghosted or not. If it was a GTA race then the feature wouldn't be available.

I suppose that makes sense too.

I mean, by choosing to be non-contact, you lose your ability to PIT others, but can't have it done to you. So that makes it balanced.

Got that right, I just mysteriously missed a checkpoint about 5 minutes ago. No idea how.I think it's to do with lag/connections. For me, it normally happens at the first checkpoint (always an early one) and in full or nearly full lobbies. So I have to assume it's to do with the system not being able to keep up with so many people going through the same checkpoint at once.

thats like masturbating... a race is about overtaking! proper overtaking!

the system has a big flaw, when #1 #2 and #3 are somewhat on the same height, #1 and #3 are within reach and should not be ghosted. also overlapping...

a kiddie that gave up and drives backwards is one thing, but what about the ASSHOLE next to me? he still just rams me off like that asshole he is.

Fvck no if anything non contact should be removed. The lamest most childish ,cartoonish, noobiest thing in the game.

Lol ghost cars that can magically occupy the same physical space as another players car but yet with even more magic cannot occupy the space of an npcs car.

Just race by yourself that's all your doing with non contact.

Wasn't this added for whiney children who suck at racing? Yah lets infect racing even more with utter nonsense that has no basis in anything.

Contact on, slipstream on, catchup off is the only setup that's somewhat based in real world driving physics.

When playing Rainbow Road on Mario Kart and the other guy intentionally collided with me so that I'd fall into the void I could elbow him in the ribs and then he wouldn't do that any more.

This this world of "you can play together, just not together" the game makers have to implement optional rules to prevent d-baggery. Otherwise everyone would be playing as Oddjob

^^Huh? I like all the races in game, just should have a separate quick join for non contact. I dont wanna waste time joining something I hate.

They added the creator filters which are great but a contact filter would be even better.

And even Mariocart a silly childs game has contact.

I can imagine these pvssy gta non contact racers wanting to play mariocart with non contact.

. i enjoy scum bags in public races because they are usually easy to dodge. EVen in that gif you showed, if the driver would have simply swerved back to his original path he was taking he would have dodged that blocker.

If you go into public races its always a good thing to keep tabs on all racers. If you're in 1st and notice a blip comming up you need to be ready for it. And always create a fake path for them to bite on.

For me.. i would have just pretended to take the path he took and that blocker would have moved out of the way... and just re adjust back to real path.

IMO tho...i think it should be left as is. But thats just me.
