What are the Movies you love as a kid then realized they were garbage

I guess Drop Dead Fred counts? Although, I don't consider it garbage. Rik Mayall was a genius. If you look at the reviews however, it has a 9% on RT which is crazy to me and a lot of people consider it bad. It truly was one of those movies I adored as a kid.

I really into Gaspar Noe's stuff when I was a pretentious film nerd type teenager because of the visuals in his films. Still am, especially Enter The Void, but now I generally think his writing is edgy and just really bad shock value material.

"The Pest" with John Leguizamo. Back then I thought it was the funniest sh*t ever, but it's not that funny now that I'm an adult.

Scary Movie 1 & 2.

I tried watching these recently and they are actually not really that funny....like at all. I chuckled at maybe one or two scenes because of nostalgic reasons.

My sense of humour was so different when I was younger, it's not really my type of comedy anymore.

I still find it funny but not because it's funny but because of how stupid it is, It's one of those movies that so stupid it's funny

Ok these are some I've watched in the last couple of years I loved when younger and cringed hard for varying reasons either for poor writing, cheesy dialogue, a ridiculous premise etc I still like these movies BTW as they've crossed that divide of being "so bad it's good".

-Romy And Michelle's High School Reunion.

-Beverly Hills Ninja.

-Gone Fishing.

-The Odd Couple II.

-The Love Guru.

I'll give you the other four but I'll fight you in the street over my boys Pesci and Danny Glover

Honestly the only parody films that still make me laugh are Leslie Nielsen's like Wrongfully Accused. Spy Hard, The Naked Gun series, Air Plane etc. Unfortunately Scary Movie kick started a trend of sh*tty "parody" films over the last 20 years or so, but I have to admit the first couple of Scary Movies haven't aged well at all.

I think the only genuine laugh I'd get is from the first one when they make a bong out of the fishtank and Ghostface gets high lol.

That's basically the only scene that made me laugh still. A lot of it has aged so badly, I cringed at a lot of the 'comedy'. Not the good kind of cringe comedy either, it just wasn't funny. I wish I'd not bothered rewatching it in full and just had the memories of when I was younger.

Yeah, the Wayans' is stuff compared really doesn't last long, lol. Give me Hot Shots or even Police Academy instead. Even Don't Be A Menace.. wasn't as good a few weeks back when researching that, I though that flick was a hoot at one time. :)

American Pie. I rewatched it awhile ago and I'm not sure what I was thinking when I saw this. Like Billy Russo said above, changes in humor over the years.

I actually still really love American Pie, at least the first two, so that's where I differ I suppose. Mostly nostalgia, however. I grew up with those guys literally. I will say it isn't as funny as it used to be, but I have seen it an absurd amount of times.

I think with American Pie you need to have seen it when it first released, and have that memory of it. The nostalgia is what makes the movie what is it. All those memories of Summer in the early 2000's.

I can’t really get into that mindset anymore, it doesn’t tickle my fancy like it used to. I don’t know, not as good for me.

That might happen for me as I get bit older. I'm only in my early 20's right now, will be 24 soon. Whilst I like to joke I'm 'getting old', I'm still very much in that teenage mindset sometimes. So I can still appreciate a raunchy comedy like American Pie, and the nostalgia helps.

I didn't mind American Wedding either, but the spinoffs and Reunion? Meh...

American Pie is definitely a product of the time. It's 20 years old after all so its humour doesn't translate that well to today, but for me personally I was just starting high school when this came out so it perfectly encapsulated the time in the pre-social media era. I actually remember doing a lot of this sh*t with my own mates in high school. So on nostalgia alone it still provides great value IMO.

All the Star Wars prequel films, especially Revenge of the Sith. Never been as interested in Star Wars since then. I realize they were terribly acted, but I can't deny those were fun ass films growing up.

Funny thing about Stars Wars is I've never watched any of the movies yet everything about the I.P is still recognisable. I even have some Stars Wars merch I've picked up over the years

I haven't watched majority of the films, but I have had a lot of experiences with Star Wars just through other forms of media. I've played a TON of Star Wars games. The older Battlefront and the newer ones, the lego games etc. Even though I've never considered myself a massive fan of Star Wars, I've consumed a lot more of it than I realize.

Let's re-define 'kid' for a moment.

I was in my early 20s when I first saw Kentucky Fried Movie (on video). Thought it was hilarious. A few decades later?  Painful.

I'll admit that I I have a new appreciation for 'A Fistful Of Yen' (a movie within Kentucky Fried Movie) since finally seeing The Wizard Of Oz this past year, as well as having had more exposure to Martial Arts movies, so the parody works better now ("extraordinary magnitude" still creeps into my everyday speech).

Also, The Blues Brothers is a long, tedious watch these days, apart from the music (which includes the best version of 'Think' by Aretha Franklin, in my opinion).

Still loving The Third Man, Eddie And The Cruisers, King's Row, and Bullitt, though. If I were ever to change my opinion on those, I would have already done so by now.

While I wouldn't go as far as saying it's garbage, but I watched Blue Streak for the first time in a long time and it hasn't aged very well. It just comes across as one of those cheesy 90s action, buddy cop comedies and the plot is absolute bonkers the more I think about it.

A jewel thief steals a diamond and hides it in an air con duct of a police station being built (how convenient) he gets out a couple of years later to find this out so he poses as a homicide detective to try and get it back. This is where the movie's logic starts falling apart. It's only been a couple of years since Miles got out of prison so why does no one recognise him? Surely his record would still be on file and he doesn't make any effort to alter his appearance.

Then there's the absurdity that he's promoted to lead detective a mere few hours after arriving. WTF? That Carlson guy manages to uncover that his badge number doesn't even exist, but the captain just promotes him at the click of a finger without checking his background. I guess anyone could just walk in off the street and be promoted to lead a division with a "fake" resume. The whole story also feels insanely rushed like it takes place over a couple of days.

It still has its redeeming qualities like Dave Chappelle who is always hilarious, but it's definitely not as good as I remember.

Gremlins....here is why....The rules of the Mogwai are 1) No food after midnight 2) No sunlight 3) Do not get wet .... then why would they set the film in a snowy town?!!! You broke your own movie rule!! Remember in the end how Stripe is looking for water...all he had to do was scoop some snow FROM OUTSIDE bring it inside somewhere warm and have instant water!! f*ck Gremlins.

the last dragon, although i still love that film, the acting wasn't great and the storyline was abit daft, but it had some great fighting scenes, and a really catchy song half way through the i still sing in my head to this day, lol.

I had just the opposite experience. I liked it as a kid but love it as an adult cause there is nothing out there like it and my adult mind appreciates it for that, plus it has Vanity in it and like you mention the songs...just catchy and fun. Yes story is thin af but it was executed in a fun way. sh*t, I rather watch The Last Dragon than that Venom (2018) film again.

Anchorman is pure booty now

I never really got the hype around that film. My younger bro and all his mates loved it. They quoted it so much. There are some genuinely funny scenes but I never thought it was that great.  It's one of those films with crtics/audience ratings disparity. 66% of critics rated it favorably, compared to 86% of the general audience.

I think for that generation 5 years younger than me, it was good intro some some satire, and a more Hollywood, OTT version of characters like Dave Brent of The Office and fellow failed sportscaster/TV show host buffoon, Alan Partridge. Whereas, I was exposed to Dave Brent a just before Anchorman, and just found the more subtle mockumentary style more digestible that the Hollywood "IM MAKING A JOKE" style delivery of Anchorman.

Not completely sh*tting on it, as it did make me laugh, particularly the flute scene in the bar.

I watched it some years ago and while it did have some enjoyable moments, I thought it was just fine as a whole. Tbh I've never been a big fan of Will Ferrel. Feels like he's just one of those comedians that yells a lot and just gets annoying sometimes.

I used to love comedies as a kid, mostly any comedy they throw around. This one in particular made me laugh out loud. Now, not as much. It's not even watchable like his really good early work.

I still really adore The Fast and Furious and 2 Fast 2 Furious but rewatching the films recently made me realize how cheesy it all is and the acting is really really bad in parts, still those movies were my childhood.
