There's been some talk comparing 3D and HD era GTAs recently. The topic piqued my interest, but I feel there are fundamental mistakes being made in these comparisons:

1) The question is phrased in a manner too subjective

2) The comparisons are way too specific (often in areas where the games are too different to compare 1:1)

3) Other similar games aren't included in comparisons

Since I'm a researcher and not a flamewarist or fanboy at heart, I want to try to research this a bit more properly, albeit it being a highly subjective topic.

It's possible to add only 3 poll questions, so I tried to make do and phrased the questions as 'successors to 3D era games', I hope it makes sense even for people who have a different preference. *)

And I know it's a moot point, but I'd love this to be taken as a honest research and not start of another flamewar :)

*) Disclaimer: I'm one of those people.

Hard to say because the older games were all different, for instance, III was a vastly different experience to San Andreas.

So you could say GTA IV Had similarities to GTA III, on the flip side you could say GTA V & Saints Row 2 had similarities to San Andreas.

1. Very easy, Saints Row 2.

2. GTA V. Since I mod this game anyway, its no big deal.

3. Again GTA V. Unfortunately, it didn't fully meet my expectations.

Bump. I expected Saints Row 2 or Sleeping Dogs to lead the first poll.

Weird how imo Saints Row 1 is the best choice but it ain't on here. I still play that game to this date just 4 hours ago specifically.

  • Best successor - Mafia 2. It had everything: map, action, story, graphics, jokes. Slightly odd handling, but overall a very nice product.
  • Biggest disappointment: of course GTA 4. It was a spit in the face after GTA SA. Features were scrapped, map reduced, story dumbed down, overall quality suffered.
  • I wished that GTA 4 was the best successor, alas, after 15 year it is obvious to me that such a game will never see the light. GTA 4 has amazing promising trailers, which exaggerated my expectations for the finished product by a huge margin. One can only hope for a group of amateurs to come up with a good mod, as R* have lost their once iron grip on perfection. I might buy a second-hand Mafia 3 when it becomes cheap enough for me to afford it.

EDITED: damn, just went on-line and bought myself Mafia 3 for a fiver.

Didn't seem like that for me. The game was just as I expected from the trailers when it comes to me. GTA V though... a totally different story.

didn't all the GTA games came out as the trailer had it to be?

Looked at the first GTA V trailer again, it had scenes with:

-A cropduster polluting agricultural workers (don't remember such event)
-A man erecting a "for sale" sign (yet we can't purchase safehouses, slightly misleading)
-A person being thrown out of Tequi-La-La (only accessable in one mission)
I think the GTA IV trailers were more representative of the final game.

As for the poll, GTA IV was the best successor IMO, and GTA V/Online was the most disappointing one. I expected the most from those two.

People thought we could buy safehouses from that one scene?

In the launch trailer it was probably meant to portray the economic depression. But in the Official Gameplay Video the real estate website was highlighted (jump to around 4:30) although that trailer focused on story mode gameplay features. (Same video without age restriction: click here.)

Hm, interesting. Why was this only exclusive to Online?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Instead they added business properties to singleplayer that felt like a last minute addition.

Even if it was half assed, I'm still glad that they added business properties. Gave you something to do after the story

Not quite sure I fully understand this question, but I’m wondering why on earth is Saints Row not on the list ? If understanding the question correctly, it would be the best successor to 3D GTA’s since San Andreas was the last one.  It was most similar to San Andreas in that its’ main focus was street gangs, offered a huge amount of player customization for the time, and was an open world sandbox where you could steal cars, war with cops and gangs, hustle for money, etc.

Saints Row 2 and on don’t even seem like they’re worthy of being on this list.  I can’t see how a non open-world game could succeed an open world game (Driver:SF [sure; it’s open world but you’re confined to a vehicle]) Mafia would be a poor choice as well, how do you go from 90’s hood gang banger to 1940’s Italian mafioso. And if not for the plot itself, Mafia was far more restrictive than GTA games.

Ah.  I guess that’s why Saints Row not on the list? Though apparently they came out in the same year.
