I was a big fan of the Undead Nightmare. The part where John's Family gets infected was a nice addition. It was worth downloading. I hope it gets some sort of revamp when RDR 2 gets released.

Yes, I did, and that's coming from someone who's not into zombie-themed games. it's not because I liked blowing zombie's heads off, but because I enjoyed the story and the interactions with the original Redemption characters like Seth. Rockstar handled the zombie comedy very well in that expansion.

I really enjoyed playing through the story of Undead Nightmare. Despite the fact that zombie games are ubiquitous, I love the way Rockstar incorporated zombies into the old west setting. Out of all the games I've played in my life, this definitely ranks as one of the most unique. The atmospheric presence of Undead Nightmare is very memorable.

I have to admit.. I never played it before. From what everybody says, it's a great expansion, I just wish I personally tried it out.

I'd have much rather had a more EfLC-esque DLC, but as it is, I liked it. I was skeptical as hell because I was sick to death of zombies around the time this came out, and to me, after they made such a perfect, authentic world, it felt kinda stupid.

 

But when I finally played it, I really enjoyed it. What made it work so surprisingly well for me is that it's not just a zombie game - rather, they added in a bunch more Weird West/folklore trappings like the Chupacabra and even the Sasquatch (and the ending to that sidequest... damn), and working the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse into the game as four horses you can find, break and ride was a brilliant idea. It was also pretty fun how they turned the formula into a zombie survival game with limited ammunition and hordes of undead that can attack you at any time. And the music was freaking great!

 

 

God I love the lyrics in this song. "The bells are ringing for the end of the line now / Feels like I'm rowing right down the Styx / But I don't care, I can kill anything, with a gun and a knife and a crucifix" is just so badass.

 

My only real gripe is that

 

 

Ross and Fordham aren't in it. C'mon, this was just begging for a scene where their automobile breaks down and leaves them at the mercy of a bunch of undead, and Ross goes out berating Fordham and blaming him for the car not working properly. That would have been hilarious. I guess they "needed" Ross to be alive so that John could be killed and come back as a zombie for the post-story gameplay, but I say if you're doing something so drastically different and blatantly non-canon, go all out!

 

 

 

It's basically just a fun little Treehouse of Horror episode of RDR and doesn't take itself too seriously, while still being pretty damn creepy and frightening at times. Even though I'd still have rather seen a more "serious" DLC that adds to the main story, this is still a fun time I don't regret owning.

 

And wasn't Red Dead Revolver originally going to be a Weird West game when it was being developed by Capcom, but was made into a more grounded spaghetti western when Rockstar picked it up? I haven't heard anything about that early version of the having zombies (the weirdest thing I've seen is that it had a character who could fly), but either way, this still feels like a cheeky acknowledgement of the original plan for Capcom's RDR.

I still think that Rockstar Games made Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare to pay homage to Capcom and their vision of the original Red Dead (Revolver) since it was supposed to have over-the-top characteristics. Just take a look at Capcom's Darkwatch: Curse of the West to understand what I'm talking about.

On-topic: I never played Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare even though I had Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition. Once I kill all those f*cking pigeons in GTAIV, play as a dead biker, and have some fun in GTA: The Ballad of Gay Tony's nightlife, I'm going to play Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition, and I'm really looking forward to mutilate them zombies. Even though I feel like zombies are overused in media, who cares? If they're used amazingly, then let it be amazing!

i'm playing this now. i'm trying to enjoy it but thanks to the idiot that broke the game with his stupid train mod if you play for more than 30 minutes the game gets bugged and the zombies turn into headless humans that shoot guns and you wont be able to save because the save screen stays in a load loop. i just play save one town and save for the next day.

i cant break the mythical horses. war wont let me mount him. damnthis bug! i wish people would find the jackass who broke this game with his stupid train mod and tar and feather his ass!

Like OP, I'm a bit of a zombie fan. But, horror in general really.

 

I loved Undead Nightmare... That said, since I last played it, zombies have been over-played by games, TV, and movies so much that the replayability of UN is less and less TBH... Glad it was John though, and the story was great fun. Felt like a really well done DLC too. (I've got the GOTY edition on PS3)

 

But like the main story, the game hasn't aged as bad as many GTA's, so once the zombie TV craze slows (basically, lose all but the main TWD series, and make that better too) then maybe my interest will grow and I'll have another flutter... But even playing this game recently, just no desire to play UN at the moment...

 

And knowing Kirkman and Co.'s plans... That'll be a while before it slows, lol.

I think it's an amazing genre, I think we need to see more of it. Definately in Redemption II.

I concur. The empty world of New Austin + Mexico worked really well as an apocalyptic open world. The atmosphere was just amazing in all honesty.

Hmmm. I think at this point zombies are too played out. Undead Nightmare was so unique how it used the zombie theme I don’t think it could be replicated.

 

For RDR2 if R* go down the obscure path again for DLC I wouldn’t mind seeing some inspirations from Westworld.

It was interesting. I loved the multyiplayer survival mode, but I felt the ending playing as undead John destroyed the game play. There was little incentive for me to continue playing when the entire point of a zombie game is to survive and not become a zombie.

I wouldn’t have liked it if we spent most of the back half of the story as Undead John, but as an unlockable post story I thought it was cool how it reflected his fate in the canon story.

 

Besides I can’t think of many games where we actually get to be the zombie. It broke the typical cliche commonly in zombie themed games where there’s usually one sole survivor and honestly he just looks so bad ass being Undead riding one of the horses of the apocalypse.

I think it worked as an entirely self contained game and story. I don't like it when GTA gets too sci-fI for example. at the risk of stating the obvious, Zombies as part of the main story wouldn't have worked.

 

I often wondered if they could do some tie ins with RDR and GTA historically - maybe a point in time where real life history splits and diverges towards the R* world.
