Dedicated servers would improve things... but they cost a crap-ton of money to operate (certainly compared to what they have now, that is more like just a database). Rockstar and Take-Two, if they chose to move that way, would have to decide:

  • Take the Shark Card money and use that to pay for servers instead of new content
  • Make it a subscription-access service
  • Make DLC's paid-for (Shark Cards for in-game cash still optional)
  • Enroll in Trump University and make millions in real estate and channel the profits toward funding the servers

With any choice they would have to shift their entire business model for GTAO.

But I still think they should've went with dedicated servers over P2P.

 

At least with dedicated servers, we would be able to enjoy the content more.

I'm guessing that around the time BoGT was released, the project leaders were sitting around a table to work out what the evolution of IV's Multiplayer would be. They had "pros and cons" on a whiteboard for P2P and Servers. They saw P2P was much lower on their-side cost and probably expected technology to improve and a significant portion of their playerbase would be on great ISP connections. They chose P2P and built the game and its business model on that foundation. Years go by, some people have crap ISPs or their family (and neighbors) hog bandwidth and a noticeable portion of the playerbase are crawling around with 0.8Mb/s or decent speed but intermittent interruptions that can kill a data stream. Plus, friends want to play together but one's in California, one's in Belgium, and one's in Abu Dhabi and (no shock) the connection between them is sketchy even though they each have good individual connections.

 

Could the game be shifted to Rockstar hosting servers?

Probably, but I'm no programmer or IT genius to say yes or no. The game may require extensive re-coding that would cost them millions in addition to all the additional hardware they would need and its maintenance and infrastructure, including industrial-level internet connections.

 

 

Yeah, I'm sure the lower cost for P2P was the main thing that won them over.

 

I kind of doubt that they could shift GTA Online over to dedicated servers. Hell, even if they could, I'm sure it would be a lot more trouble than it's even worth, especially this late in GTA V's life-cycle.

 

They would probably have to go back and re-configure every system within GTA Online, both old and new, and I imagine that would end up being a complete nightmare for everyone over at Rockstar.

 

It would be bad for everyone that plays it as well, because Rockstar would have to take down the servers while they hook the new ones up, configure them, and test them to make sure they work properly.

 

Hopefully, they learn the next time around if they ever decide to make another GTA multiplayer (or any multiplayer really).

GTAVI's online would likely be a host-server system... with a subscription fee; based on the mistakes they (hopefully) are learning from from Multiplayer and Online

Well they all voted to keep us in. Only England and Wales voted out, and it was 1.3 million more votes at 51.9% and it sure shut up the remain supporters.

 

They use England for their own benefit, we give enough away and don't get anything in return lol. I'm sure some Scots aren't bad (Leave Supporters) but whoever voted in is TERRIBLE.

 

I was gonna say you seem alright to me, until you pull out the race card on Scottish people. Since when was Scottish a RACE? I love how Nicola Sturgeon said "I'm British and want the best for our country" NO NO NO! you're SCOTTISH, it's ENGLISH for ENGLAND.
