Anybody else get the vibe that the Online Heists were originally not i

I found this post on Reddit, written by Pope_Of_Shizlam, but it actually made a lot of sense to me.

The way that guard in The Prison Break immediately starts shooting you, when up until then it's implied to be a stealth mission (until you f*ck up, that is). The way that Agent 14 gives numerous ultimatums ("the more noise you make down there, the more believable the cover story will be", "the quicker you do this the more you'll be paid," etc.) and each heist screen mentions "potential cuts" -- yet the only heist where gameplay actually affects your final cut is The Pacific Standard Job. And, even then, that's only one portion of the mission.

Does anybody else get the feeling that Online Heists were significantly more in-depth during development, only to be scaled back for various reasons? Maybe the Heists update took so long to arrive because Rockstar got a little too ambitious. After constantly replaying each heist, hearing each piece of dialogue and noting their triggers, I feel like Rockstar originally intended there to be much more gameplay flexibility with different variables (like the aforementioned ultimatums) as opposed to the linear gameplay of the final product.

I'm not criticizing them for possibly being too ambitious... Just thinking about "what could have been." Thoughts, anybody?

I was interested in what you guys thought.

EDIT: RIP title

Well, from the Pacific Standard mission that was accessible in 2014, we know that Heists were going to be very similar to contact jobs, rather than a new "category" altogether. Instead of performing setups and planning, Heists would be more like blind robberies. If you fail, the heist would fail, and thus you'd have to start over.

I think that would've been really interesting to see. I like the way Heists are now, but the idea of a blind robbery coupled with the risk of the job would've made for tense gameplay moments.

So there would be no setups?

Speaking of contact missions, I just watched the video by mrbossftw where he talks about how former rockstar CEO's, Leslie Benz, view for online was via contact mission. And the new ceo's view is adversary modes. Kind of left me sour.

Yeah, I also wish they made more contact missions instead. I don't enjoy PvP, but I love co-op.

Not really

Like The7thOne said heists looked like contact missions so I GUESS they became more complex during development because Rockstar was taking too long to release them which means players were expecting heists to be big, this means heists were constantly changing as the days, weeks and months passed

Rockstar tried to make something really big with cutscenes and everything to satisfy the players but i think heists were always this linear

That's what I'm saying though^^^

OT: that is an interesting thought. I always felt like Heists were supposed to be more than what they are.

I hate his clickbait vids just as much as the next guy, and rarely watch his vids, but every once in a while he makes a decent vid.

the only thing i know is that this line

"the quicker you do this the more you'll be paid,"

its about the elite challenges, hit the elite challenge and you get more money!

I think when I heard Karen Daniels utter the line, "are you here for the secret codes?" and Rashkovsky's terrible Russian accent, I knew that something seemed off and perhaps even rushed.

Then again, perhaps I was over-analysing and expected too much.

It raises a lot of good questions though, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised. One thing is for certain though--I don't quite understand how some can replay them over and over again so often. I suppose to each their own and it can be good for making a bit of cash, but I just can't do it.

It's not hard to imagine the online heists being more like offline heists where you do have a choice. But you don't make that choice on the fly either.

I think they scaled it back just to fit the heists for PS3 and Xbox360

Maybe even being able to fill your spots with NPCs for a reduced cost.

I would say that as an overall trend, in all the GTA games, Rockstar is too ambitious with their ideas at the beginning, and they have to cut corners in order to get something out the door. You see clues and disconnects like those mentioned in the OP, throughout the GTA series.

I do praise Rockstar's initial ambition, though. Their intent is good. And when it comes to open world-building, they set themselves a hell of a challenge and they mostly get there.
