Why does it feel like the LTS and Legitimate TDM community is dead

TDM was so much fun on GTAIV, I played hours on end sometimes. GTAV TDM has been a big letdown, with no chance of recovery.

More is not always better, and that's definitely the case when comparing PVP between GTAIV and GTAV/O

They completely ruined Deathmatch modes. There are several factors: user created maps, bulletproof helmets, moving while sniping, first person, owned weapons and letting people spam Lester and BST. Not to mention they've done ZERO work on them despite other modes getting updates.

If they really want to fix them all they really need to do is lock a few of the options. Matches should be locked to third person, helmets should be removed and all matched should be "Forced + Pickups" with a timer and not a race to 20 kills. Remove BST, Lester and kill/death perks and it would be fine.

Personally I find LTS the most entertaining game mode but it's let down by Rockstars fixed team 'balancing' algorithm that's designed to disadvantage high level players 99% of the time.

"Crappy content generated" and not all user generated content are bad, just 90% of them.

Should have an option to disable the bullet proof helmet, it's giving too much advantage for player over 120 level already.

Moving while sniper is cancer, it ruined sniping in general, the marksman rifle was not a big problem in last gen but now its firepower and speed, also you are able to hit the target perfectly while dancing just unbelievable.

There is an option for the First/Third person lock but mot people won't use it.

Owned weapons maps will 100% turned to a explosive spam fest with randoms.

The ability to call to Lester to see where the players are and you can call merry weather to help you are complete bullsh*t.

The BST effect and filter removes the fairness in the game completely, distorted vision wtf man.

Still, I like playing TDM and LTS with people who avoid the stuff I mention above

I bought GTA 5 for online specifically to play TDM! but due to well ..all of the above , I just dont play it at all. The worst thing being the screen effect when your winning!!!. They just dont care about what should be the the core game modes and most fun , like Survival! zero proper updates in years! crazy.

LTS is a really great game mode when done correctly and the competitiveness is really refreshing.

its a shame that people would rather not partake in it.

I spent 95% of my time in TDM's up until joining PS4 a year ago.

While I agree that LTS's are great in concept, the problem with them is they are poorly implemented into the game....referring to the often intolerable load times between rounds. If one person doesnt have a world class connection we all sit for minutes on end sometimes.....and then you have people leaving and the game mode just goes to crap.

R* is also to blame for not programming these game modes to let people join post-launch. If you launch a TDM or LTS that is the high point for the room in terms of player count. It only and always goes down from there as people quit.

2 years ago on PS3 you could launch full TDMs semi-regularly, or at least I did, and players battled it out because win or lose you got paid pretty well. But now the game population is pretty much just made up of babies who quit the moment they realize they cant insta-win. Even if you could get more than 6 players into a TDM, they will start dropping like flies after the first 60 seconds because of the ragequitters.

Frankly I have given up on this game for pvp, the players all left ages ago for greener pastures and R* decided to let PSN do the matchmaking rather than program a good matchmaking system into the game itself. The matchmaking in-game is minimally functional.

If you have a solid group of friends to play TDMs with, send me a PS4 friend invite and I'll join in. I am one of the two most verified TDM creators in this game (back when people actually played TDMs) and everything I create is done in the spirit of the game. None of this parkour bullsh*t or over-the-top maps trying way too hard to be epic and end up just being a confusing mess with zero attention played to lines of sight, proper spawning, balance, etc.

Click the link in my sig to get an idea of the type of pvp/TDM gameplay I am all about. I totally miss that gameplay, it just doesn't exist on PS4 from what I can tell.

I think it is safe to say they have decided the focus for gameplay is within freemode now. It is likely less work for them to put content into freemode than to add in those host option/features you describe as well as implement matchmaking so that it draws across mutliple player population pools.

I still play TDM all the time, and enjoy it, but I'd like to add to the sh*t list... the off-radar exploit that has never been patched. Sure I play a bit dirty sometimes (lester, helmet, rpg), but when you got players who don't show on the minimap, or even their gamertag above their head, it's straight cheating, right up there with lag-switch users who bounce all over the screen, these are usually "RnG" tryhards who are laggy to begin with. Then you got players who run/drive off the map when they are winning... if there's a hell I will see them there.

But aside from the exploits, that's mostly just dirty players, not necessarily bad game design. If someone's spamming lester and explosives, I can do it right back... All that said, it does seem like R* has abandoned the TDM community, which is a shame.

People still complaining about servers? There are none its p2p so people with bad connections do really bad because your ping is crap. If the host is US and you live in europe your ping is crap, tired of all this complaining about "servers". Thank god they didnt add lag compensation, otherwise laggers have heavy handicap.

Free aim.

I do TDMS all the time. No Lester, no explosives, no helmets. Find a good TDM crew and you will meet more and more of them and will never have trouble finding a full and clean TDM.

I can attest to this; Charlie makes some great maps and I also remember when you would regularly host during the prime PS3 days when full lobbies were not at all hard to obtain--most would even come back for the next TDM despite them not being launched from a playlist format. It's a shame that it's such a struggle these days, but yes nothing has been verified since I cannot even remember and the struggle to get anyone to join much of anything PvP related that is not a gimmick of some sort is quite clear and defined on the PS4 front.

With that said, we should definitely run some TDMs again one day.

Platform PC:

I played about 4 DM/TDMs with 8-10 players in the last 2 days. They're not dead, but it's not always easy to get a large one.

Capture is the deadest for sure; more than 2 players is rare, more than 4 I've only done 1-2 x.

LTS I can get 2-4 often enough, more than 4 is rare, more than 6 again only 1-2x.

DM/TDM (not counting vehicle DM) I frequently can run into lobbies with 6-12 players.

The modes may not be as popular as they once were, but I think matchmaking in this game is just awful and makes this much much worse than it could be.

Matchmaking as it is in this game leaves lots of players stranded in isolated lobbies that will not be found.

My experiences trying to join jobs: if I host something of my choice, it is very unlikely any players will join via quick job/on call, only those I invite from session/friends/"skill matched players". If I host because "no active DM found- hit Esc to host a DM" then I have some chance of a few joining. If I join jobs that someone else is hosting, most of the time it's a few players, occasionally it's someone who has hit the jackpot and has a large group already in (and if luck is truly smiling, the host is not an On-Call Host).

But the number of times that I can jump into large DM lobbies means that there are players playing them, even if they are mostly On-Call.

(Note: I don't have any issues with other players using On-Call as long as they aren't the host, although I don't use it myself because I like to see the lobby options). On-Call hosting breaks the matchmaking in this game even worse than it already was.

I can see the point you're making, but I'd venture to say that far more people play this game in third person than first person. Looking around corners is fairly common in TPS games, and certainly something to anticipate. When I've played DM that were locked to first person, it's usually one of a few things: a low level host who is just messing with the options without knowing what they're doing, it's one of the DM maps that defaults to locked and the host didn't change it, or the host knows that FP will likely result in several players being at a disadvantage because they're not used to it. And every time I've played a DM in first person, one or more other people have complained about it.

FP for ground combat is...ok in this game. It has its disadvantages - gun sights obscure much more of your view when zoomed in, and you lose hitmarkers as well; some player animations result in wild disorienting swings of the camera for no real reason. It's definitely not my favorite. FP for driving however is far worse; usually more than half the screen is now occupied with static junk rather than a view of the road. In either situation, looking to the sides is clunkier than in third, and far clunkier than 'real' first person IRL.

They never got rid of the stupid filters, the play areas are too small, and they choose to punish if you are on top.

Foot combat feels like a joke to me, and I really can't take it seriously in this game (I think others have already covered the reasons for this in some depth already).

I enjoy vehicle DMs and LTS', but as with other modes getting a full lobby is hard when people tend to leave after a minute or so if no one joins. Just the other day I tried to start a 4-player minimum Buzzard DM, only to have the two people who joined leave right before two more joined, who then left 30 seconds later before I gave up. I enjoy the stock staples like RPGs/Insurgents and Bumper cars, but the matchmaking is what ultimately tends to hold LTS/DM back.

Don't forget those "You're doing well/poorly. Let's put a hyper-annoying pulsing filter on your screen for you"

Oh yeah I f*cking hate that.

Who thought that was a good idea? Also, when you're spectating, its like this over saturated image instead of the default color scheme.

Seems so tacked on and unnecessary

Sorry but R* suck at competitive PvP, the lack of servers, anti-cheat & patching exploits, the hit detection, damage model, balancing, mixing assisted and free aim ffs... I can't name a single thing R* did right to make this a somewhat decent PvP game.

So it's only natural that any group of players that enjoys TDM would move on to a better game suited for competitive PvP.

Now there is no hope for captures and tdm's to come back to live again unless rockstar does another double rp and double cash. Quite frankly I enjoy these events not because of the double money because its good to see people playing normal deathmatches unlike those sh*tty spawn traps.

I would say that in general they have shown that they are very behind the curve when it comes to online game programming. Everything you point out are just evidence of this as it pertains to LTS/DM's.

They are getting better though. But it is clear they are not going to go back and redo core areas of the game so that the user experience isn't so poor (load times, matchmaking, etc)

yea, that's why I gave up on comptetive PvP modes in GTAO right at the start, there's tons of better games for that, luckily there's much more to GTAO. I really hope R* put together a comptetive side in the sequel though. I'd even be willing to pay the bill to rent official servers so many of us can play competitively and play the way we want. That would be a much better money making scheme than charging some players for fake currency IMO. I don't bite that type of bait but I would if it gave me control of my own game / servers. There's big money in that too, just takes more effort on their part and they lose control of their shark bait business.

Gotta admit though, some of the PvP modes are fun as hell for a couple hours of casual playing.

Because it kinda is. Only LTS you can get people to play are user created ones (some are pretty good though tbh). And for team deathmatch all you get invites to are spawn trap parkour bullsh*t or RnG maps.

A few updates ago, Rockstar added "Filter Quick Job Content" to Online > Options. You can choose between Rockstar Created Only, User Created Only, and Any. The only user-created jobs I play are ones I've downloaded from the Social Club.

I play TDMs and Captures frequently with my crew, but it's a pain to get outsiders to join.

I think a big part of the problem is that there's too many aim settings which divides the community into 4 server-types rather than 2.

The game should just have Free Aim and Assisted Aim.

What we need is something like this:

Steam_serverbrowser.png

The goal here is to present the player with a new way to join jobs. By going to the pause menu and going to the "GTA ONLINE" tab, the player should have a option called "Find Jobs", which will bring the player to a matchmaking server and allow it to select a variety of different lobbies to join. The server will first ask the player which game mode it wants to play, once the game mode is selected, the player is now free to select a map and join. While selecting a map, one will see the following:

Name of the map/Number of players/"*All Weapons or Forced Pickups?*"/*First or Third person camera*/Latency

Options with ** cannot be changed once one sends any invites (sending any invites will allow your lobby to be joined by players browsing on the server system)

After selecting a map, the player will go straight into a lobby (like always) and will wait until the job starts.
