How much data usage does GTAO use?

My cable company literally just implemented a 300gb/month data cap (because greed and anti-consumer practices are cool now, I guess) and it seems my download rate is sky high. My average tends to be 5gb/day but my download skyrocketed to using 25gb on the days I played GTA 5, including yesterday when I didn't even touch GTAO (only logged into the single player). Does this sound about right?

And if anyone has any tips in general on how to get my upload/download rates down, that would be appreciated. I literally only am online for GTAO (rarely) and am on Twitch and YouTube almost daily (they replaced TV). Literally nothing else.

Are you recording a lot of game clips? That will really hammer your upload total, I push over 300gbs some months 😅

I'm no expert, but that doesn't sound right to me.

It should only be uploading the positions of players/objects, etc. - the graphics and intense stuff I'd imagine is all handled by the consoles (or PC).

I don't know the amount for sure, but that just sounds way off to me. Something funny's got to be going on there.

(Not accusing you of anything, just saying something's probably up).

I'm unlimited with the company Richard Branson owns. Hope you don't mean that one.

I edited the post. It seems it's actually my download rate that's up. But what's odd is my upload rate skyrocketed yesterday only... As in all the bars on the graph except for that day's is more than a gig or two with this one being in the 30's. The f*ck?

What I don't get is why my download rates for June 7 and 8th are so high but my upload rate was in the single digits all month with exception of the 11th when I wasn't even on GTAO. I can't figure that out at all.

How much do you play per day? I don't know how you could use so much data in a day solely from GTA Online. I would guess it's between 60mb-150mb/hour.

That day with the high upload rate was when the hackers stole the entire contents of your hard drive :p

Here's a ridiculous idea: If you can find an old, old 10 Mbps Ethernet switch, you could put it inline with your GTA device and that might help limit the data rate and total data used.

In the early days of GTA0, I was in hotels sometimes, with my PS3, using either hotel WiFi or cellular 4G WiFi hotspot, and it worked OK. In those last gen days, I don't think GTA0 was that much of a data hog.

Twitch and you tube will eat up all your data I'd start there

i dont know in invite only sessions but on open lobby gtao uses around 150mbs per hour.

i dont know how people can survive on limited internet, on slow months i use over 300gbs, on active months i go over 500gbs.

as you can see, last month was a slow month using just 330gbs.😀

I'm genuinely curious... how? What does your average day look like regarding internet downloads? I have around 80GB and never go over. Granted, my internet is terrible, and any videos I watch are in 360p or less, but I still use the internet a lot.

Like Elektra said, I'm sure that's where most of your data is going.

Also i had comcast cable Internet and they gave me the same 300gb cap on my data, but when i went over it was never enforced. Never got a letter, wasn't charged extra, nothing.

Are you sure it's GTA:O using your bandwidth?

I mean if you're playing on Xbone/PS4, you have to think of the amount of updates and if you DL your games

Leave that company ASAP and tell everyone you know to do the same. My ISP has charged a bandwidth cap for years, IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!!!

We already pay a fee for "access to Internet" as stated on the bill, you NEED bandwidth to access the Internet so technically the ISPs are charging twice for the exact same service. They literally charge you an additional fee to limit your use to something you already paid for. Then charge even more if you go over your limit. We are fools if we pay this and we are begging to be taken advantage of more and more as time goes on.

I've been waiting quite a long time for others to grow brain stems and balls concerning this. The only reason we're charged more & more is because fools just pay up no matter how unlegit the bill looks. So let me know how you fair, I managed to get 60$ off my monthly bill to offset any overage charges. My ISP basically bribed me so I'd stay with them.

That's my kids money they're stealing so I'm willing to protest, cancel my accounts, maybe even put on an Anonymous mask and flip a couple ISP vans... sh*t needs to change, I just need more people with me so I don't get arrested :)

I used to monitor it with a network gagdet on my 2nd monitor on my PC, and it would use up to 500kB/s of download and upload in full sessions. I'm too lazy to do the math, but it shouldnt be using 5 gigs a day just for GTA O alone.

I'm going to avoid GTAO for about a week and use my internet as I usually do. I played GTAO for about 8 hours all three days I mentioned. I did that yesterday and used no more than 7 gigs so I'll see how it is the rest of the week. Honestly, I wish I could ditch the company but it's the only ISP that offers service in my area, Time Warner (Armstrong here), has completely monopolized my area and a significant radius around it. The only way for me to drop them would be to move 30 miles away.

that blows, do they have an unlimited data package? Might be worth it if they do.

In my experience when I had to "hotspot" my internet and had to monitor my usage, the true effect of the downloads is directly related to the amount of people and activity in the lobby. Another negative to being a P2P setup.

In a invite only with friends, I would use 60-150 MB/Hr. When in a full free roam session, it could get up to 300-1000 MB/Hr.

5-7 Gigs in a freeroam session is easily obtainable if you play for a good stint.

It is by far the biggest bandwidth draining game I have ever played.

Makes sense! I guess my family doesn't use much internet in the grand scheme of things (mostly YouTube in low quality and web browsing).

Somehow I have filled my capacity to make these up. I run (x) and click down on the d-pad when I respawn so I can quickly see where my adversaries are at and I realised recently that this activates the record feature in GTA.

So poorly implemented. Can't believe nobody thought that through.

Any tips on disabling this would be well received. I'm not making any clips of my gaming because I have nothing interesting to share. Someone else can take time to make "how to" videos. I am a consumer.

Don't worry, usually after you exceed your montly data cap, you'll still have internet that won't cost you a dime more, but it's limited to 1Mb/s,which is actually OK for GTAO,if you don't use streaming services or internet TV that often it's not that hard to stay under 100Gb/month (unless you download games instead of buying their physical copies)

You should have done the math, because 500kb/s is 1.8 gig per hour..

Not too hard to get to 5gigs a day at that rate.

You're both wrong. He should have said "Kb/s" and you should have said "KB/s". Unless, of course, playing GTAO has a combined up & down of half a meg of data every second.

Edit: I just checked my usage and on an average all day session I used about 7GB. That would have included a bit of streaming and some relatively small regular internet use.
