CJ post Los Santos was awful & annoying. Should have stayed in his element.

 

Being a bitch to Catalina for no reason, burying a dude alive for insulting his sister, doing crazy CIA sh*t and robbing the mob only to be a bitch again and go back to the hood etc.

 

If you want to put it like that, one could argue that the difference between CJ being a bitch and Niko being bitch, one was willingly being a bitch, the other had no choice. But I don't want to open that can of worms, lol.

And its just not CJ being a bitch thats the problem (not every character has to be 100% badass), his character is an inconsistent mess in every way post LS. Probably because the whole multiple protagonists thing didn't work back then so they just combined three characters.

 

 

 

And its annoying because most of the other characters in SA are very memorable & awesome. I wish the Las Venturas arc didn't have sh*tty CJ and instead a mobster or triad which would fit much more

cole phelps from la noire. i liked him at first but once he started his affair with elsa i just resented him. and when the lapd demoted him and everybody hated him i was right there with them. he had two kids and a wife and he threw it away for some other girl. and his death was not nearly as sad as john marstons.

And Kinzie in Gat out of Hell. I only played as her to grab her special collectible then AFK'd for the rest of the time you need to use her for an achievement. Used Gat the whole game, f*ck Kinzie. She is the WORST female character I've ever seen in a game and I HATE how she was the only Saint from the Third game who actually survived. Viola, Angel, and even Zimos were way cooler than her. And Oleg, can't forget about him

Claude from GTA 3: This is mostly due to me playing Vice City first before playing 3, so the mute thing seemed boring to me.

 

Trevor: All 3 protagonists in GTA V bug me in some way but Trevor is the worst. To me it seems like they made him to appeal to little ass kids. Michael is too whiny but I dislike him the least. Franklin I understand he is a guy trying to leave the street life but he only knows how to be a criminal, but they left him unfinished in my opinion. So much potential left on the table.

Squall from FFVIII. The main reason I gave up half way through disc 2 is because he is such an antisocial whiny little sod who doesn't even have the common decency to take the two seconds he would need to shake the hand of someone he meets. Tosser. Absolute tosser.

 

Pretty much every silent protag except Doomguy (any incarnation) and his 90's id brethrem, and arguably Claude Speed, since he is canonically mute.

Cloud. Kingdom Hearts made me hate this dude, so did Advent Children. So, my bad. FF7 wasn't so bad but the side characters were so much more interesting than this dude. Dead Zack was more interesting.

Leon Kennedy. I don't dig characters that are in really sh*t and new situations but totally think it's normal. Leon slightly gets a pass from this because I guess he has dealt with some similar stuff but the crazy priest, changing people, a dude with a f*cking chainsaw and a sea monster? It's okay to act a bit intimidated or surprised you're alive. And smash Ada, the f*ck's wrong with you.

Sora. I don't hate these dudes but he's just a corny little bastard. And not in a cute way, but in an annoying way. Multiple words on your shoulder and you're worried about your dumb emo ass friend and Kairi.

* Dante from DmC Devil May Cry. I hated everything about this character. His ugly haircut and dirty clothes made him look like an alcoholic hipster hobo,

(Which is why i allways played with the classic DMC1 and DMC3 Dante skins.)

He has an annoying voice and cusses more than a TDM lobby full of 13 year olds in COD, and he came off as a Douchebag in the game. One of the worst character re-designs IMO...

The bloke from Bioshock. From the very beginning I kept banging my head how he always does what he's told even if it seems completely idiotic. I was so sick of it it was one of the reasons why I stopped playing the game and looked up what the plot twist is. So then I learned that IS the point of the plot twist - yea, well didn't work for me.

 

Gordon Freeman in HL2. Now, I think HL2 is complete bullsh*t to begin with (HL was great), but "the Freeman" takes the cake. He is not a character, never was and still everyone tries to pretend that is he. Not only that but he's supposed to be this Jesus figure or something. He doesn't even exist in the bloody game, he consists of just floating arms and all that joking how he's a man of few words and all that sh*t - NOT. FUNNY. In fact now I wonder whether all the people in the game don't just have hallucinations, imagining that some savior will come and save everyone. So the whole game is some collective dream or something. Maybe a side effect of the sterility drug.

 

Everyone in GTA V. It takes special kind of talent to create non-characters so ridiculously unlikeable I'd rather fool around with a mute online protag then those. How the same writers that made the GTA IV trio managed to sh*t out these drooling retarded cartoons is beyond me.

 

BTW regarding Aiden from WD, yea the guy was bland but had some nice cameo moments in Bad Blood

I don't think CJ would be able to break Sweet out of prison considering Toreno has eyes all over him before he stole Jetpacks and casinos. Toreno would most likely move sweet to a different prison in a different country most likely if CJ made move to try to break him out. CJ knows that Toreno has basically control over sweet's situation too.

The one man Army stuff has always been part of GTA's narrative dissonance. CJ is pretty much justified when it comes to acting like a pussy when it comes to the Catalina and Toreno scenes. To be fair he also stands up to C.R.A.S.H in their last few missions in Venturas. When it comes to C.R.A.S.H, CJ works for them because of the overall power they had in LS and because they had dirt on him with false framing on Pendellburry's death and later because they threatened to have sweet killed. The real problem with working for Tenpenny comes when CJ meets Toreno who basically is far more powerful than C.R.A.S.H and takes control of sweets situation which makes CJ working for them in the Venturas part questionable. In the original Bioshock, the beauty of the protagonist is, he is being manipulated and subconsiously ordered to perform his tasks, until you play it a first time you don't even realize it.

 

But Booker, he is just flat, uninspiring and I never really cared for him. Elizabeth has far more character, both in the main game and in the expansions, where her background and personality really flesh out.

 

There is also the original 'Hacker' from System Shock 1. He is just a killing machine and emotionless. The tech at the time was probably the limiting factor, but he was little more than the Doom Soldier. I hope the new version of the game gives him a little personality.

Michael de santa , he's a fink who betrayed and tried to set up his running buddy although he had a good reason for doing it. I never played as a character like that before. I started to loose respect for him when I learned that brad had died and it was him in the grave. I hated the tense moments when franklin started to smell his bullsh*t. Michael is a schmuck . nobody want to play as a schmuck. its like rockstar took al bundy and turned him into bank robber.

Aww and I thought he'll be a staple of GTAF forever, in fact I was looking forward to the time when GTA VI comes out, to see whether he'd have kept crapping on IV... Now we'll never know. But at least his posts will remain a classic. Who did he tick off eventually?

 

Anyway... It seems I've not even posted in this thread but I really don't remember any, er, "protagonist" I disliked so much as Trevor, or in fact the entire GTAV trio.

 

And I'm not even that demanding of videogame protagonists. I enjoy good characters but they are so rare and always go unappreciated by the public (hell, Gordon Freeman once won a GameSpot poll for the best protag) that basically most protagonists we get in games are mediocre at best. And even with those low standard the GTAV trio stands out as being garbage. I'll much rather take someone bland than despicable, constantly whining, galactically inconsistent, created just for the sole purpose to be reprehensibly edgy and annoying.

 

The other side is that I also hate it when protagonists are mute in an otherwise voice-acted game. Not just the likes of Half-Life (in the first one it was fairly okay actually) but also RPGs like KOTOR or more recently Kingdoms of Amalur. In fact since I played KOTOR only a few years ago (after the Mass Effect trilogy) it really annoyed me and I was looking around if there's any voice acting mod, sadly I didn't find any.

 

Oh, and I just remembered. Batman in the Arkham series. Nothing too much against the character per se, but the way he was built, like a bodybuilder stuffing his suit with extra bricks, geez that just completely put me off and I couldn't get over it.

 

It was just completely jarring to have this super-smart stealthy detective be built like 3 Rambos stapled together. How the hell could he even move his body enough to fit into those small ventilation shafts, and then crawl through them without breaking them off and then crashing through at least 3 more floors?

 

Plus it highlighted the one Batman issue that he gets so beefed up because his privileged highness just loves being overpowered as frak and beating up half-witted minions instead of disarming them peacefully (which he could definitely do).
