Character you disliked ( or hated ) to play ?!?

Ah, Killzone. That reminds me. Why the hell do we play as the ISA scum? Sev was a boring protagonist (KZ2), and his partner Rico was a loose cannon dummy.

At the end of the game (the boss fight) they should have switched the player perspective and let us play as almighty Colonel Radec or one of his Elites! - Killzone 2

In fact, I still don't get why they keep making games where you play as the ISA. That's just wasted potential. Hell, an alternate universe game where Radec doesn't get killed and beats the crap out of Sev and Rico would be pretty great. The whole Killzone fanbase love the Helghast.

While i prefer playing as the bad guys (and ISA were the bad guys), the ISA were boring as hell and the Helghast were the coolest looking empire ever.

Moving on from Killzone to GTA:

Luis Lopez from TBOGT, and all 3 protagonists from GTA V.

Mister Pink

The characters of Niko and CJ are mostly products of their evironment ie. the map and the gameplay features implemented in the game, but particularly in the case of San Andreas and GTA IV they are more polarizing and very apparent moreso than other two games, bar GTA III maybe.

I'll start with the example of Claude as it's the easiest to explain. He's mute so we can't really hate him for what he says, how reacts with other people. We can only judge him by his actions. And since the player controlling him in a game that's revolutionary and favourable amongst the gaming community, most don't have any or much negative issues towards Claude.

IV lovers seem to dislike CJ. I rarely see anyone on this forum that love IV staunchly yet, have love for CJ. For me, the protags weren't as important back then. It was all about map and gameplay. So when you come at San Andreas with CJ, he's a conduit and by-product of a multi-city map with countryside, new swimming and diving feature, new ability to fly planes, gamble, new ability to ride bikes, new climbing feature, new car modding feature, RPG elements and new haircut/tattoos and a deeper customisable wardrobe feature as well as ability physically change based on eating habits. In short San Andreas probably introduced the most new features be-it gameplay-wise or map wise in size and scope. CJ had to be everything in a story that will utilize the traversing and geography of the map.

So in this topic, I'll defend him a little to balance out the play. I'm not going to attack or address particular forum members views post some things I took from CJ that made him enjoyable for me. He had a lot to prove as he left his gang in the hood, presumably for a better, non-gang-banging life. We've seen this as a recurrent theme in a lot of black-centric "hood" films in the U.S notably Menace II Society. We never really got the story about, if you are lucky to leave the 'hood and it doesn't work out.. you have to come home and face the shame of not being successful and returning to your old life. This is the premise that will set up CJ's relationships with his old gang. You are down the bottom of the pecking order. You need to gang respect again because to your family, you are disloyal. So there's an element of distrust among your peers and the only thing keeping you afloat is that your brother Sweet is so respected is sort of acting boss. Why am I talking about this? Well, despite all the over-the-topness or "CJ was a little bitch he did what he was told" - I believe CJ had no other choice and most would do the same.

CJ, essentially came home with his tale between his legs, broke and his mother dying. Deaths and tragedies in family (un)fortunately bring them together. Now, CJ has nowhere else to go. His only literal immediate family is running the crew and GSF and he has to try patch things up with his brother and sister who he's trying to protect (and we get a nice lesson about race-relations at the same time). Immediately, CJ is targeted by corrupt cops which was feeling towards police at the time in LA with Rodney King riots, Rampart etc, Rockstar set the tone, perfectly. To f*ck CJ and his stance in the gang up even more, Sweet is held by Tenpenny and forces CJ to complete a series of tasks for him. With his sister off with the Mexicans, Sweet locked up and held for ransom by Tenpenny and CJ's mother dead, CJ can only do his best appease Tenpenny to get Sweet back or be stuck with the snakes that are Big Smoke and Ryder. Remember Tenpenny was aligned with the Ballas, so was BS and Ryder, so essentially, you are on your own. This is emphasized when your only semi-trustworthy friend is the incompetent OG Loc.

So while, CJ might have been a bitch, I think Rockstar gave us enough canon to see the motivation CJ had to survive. He didn't really bitch and moan, he had a "just get on with it" attitude. As we progress, we watch CJ evolve. He gets better with a gun, he gets better with driving, he enrolls in flight-school and gets a dodgy pilots licence he gets physically stronger as the game progresses. It's like a coming-of-age where he was a waster and when his hand his forced, he becomes boss, just like Michael Corleone in the Godfather. He tried to leave, they pulled him back in and it turns out he was f*cking better than anyone else at doing it.

We can deduce that CJ probably wasn't the brightest, given his probable lack of education etc but there was something ambitious and smart enough for him to leave the gang-life behind him originally. You can say he might have been a bit softer than the rest but he came back. It was an underdog story, a revenge story, a betrayal story, a corruption story and a story that drew or was based from actual events.

I personally liked that when we didn't have too much whining from our protag like we've heard from Trevor, Michael and dare I say, Niko.

Niko was an enjoyable character but I can see why some disliked him and why some loved him. People disliked him because he was mostly motivated by his own personal vendetta to seek revenge which saw him emigrate to Liberty City under the guise of a better life with his cousin but mostly to find that special someone. At home point one can argue that you don't feel the same motivation to find this person. I didn't empathise with Niko so much as I felt means didn't justify end. He was motivated by his own personal closure and revenge, one that I didn't sympathise with so much as it was all sort of based around events that happened outside the story. Were the antagonists a metaphor for the media and the sh*tstorm that arose from San Andreas? That would be nice.

IV's dark tone or more serious tone was fantastic. The more realistic graphics, the car damage, the driving - all amazing but Niko was a product of the games limitations. No planes, OK, Niko wouldn't do that, it's unrealistic etc is what we were told. From SA to IV, the game felt so restrictive on so many levels, that's undeniable. But we know Niko if he was "born" in another GTA, for example GTA V, Rockstar would have made a compelling and believable excuse for Niko to be able to fly.

What I'm trying to say is, I don't dislike Niko. In fact, I like him. I like GTA IV but dislike it's restrictions (no countryside, no diving, no RPG elements, no planes, not much character customisation, not many rewards, no car modding, no unlimited bullets and not much to spend money on.) This doesn't mean IV isn't a compelling game or that Niko isn't a good character. Rockstar work withhin the "limitations" of IV to deliver a more refined, concentrated story and character. It's more like a Mafia game in that respect and less GTAish. Where there was a lack of features it made up for in technical aspects. I mean I played that game for years.

So CJ and his story may have been arguably inconsistent but I think we can agree that this is a product of filling a larger than life story across one of the largest and most diverse and legendary open-world maps with a long list of new to GTA features, I think that's an easy trade-off if.

Same with Niko. his story was mas more refined, centered in one city with arguable less supporting characters and less need for missions to make use of new features. It's almost apples and oranges. It's like playing Sleeping Dogs, where the map is smaller but the story more focused on one strong story. GTA IV I would compare to an epic film and San Andreas, I would compare to a 3 or 4 season TV show like the Wire in one sense where each chapter of geography on the map presents it's own story within the main overarching story. Like the Wire season one focuses on the projects first season ,then the docks on the second season and then school system and back to the projects in another.. and downtown when it comes to politics in 4th season.

One of my complaints about San Andreas was that I originally thought the story was sloppy and all over the place because it was long and parts didn't make sense if I put it down for a while or spent lengths of time distracted by the million other features. However when I replayed it, I figured to try complete the missions as Rockstar intended to tell the story, not being tempted to go to another mission prompt until I've completed the current open mission string. The story made a lot of sense and was long and fun and took us around the map. The map was like it was made for the story and vice versa. San Andreas' story could only happen on that map.

So, yeah, this is long post but I felt CJ needed some positive representation because I often think he's dismissed. I critized Niko but to criticize Niko was really just criticizing my perceived lack of features in IV. It's not that Niko is a bad character. As I said I do like him.

Currently my most disliked character would be Trevor. I loved the idea of him but he's just too 'on' all the time. It's like being sober and hanging out with your drunk obnoxious friend. Not fun.

I hope to see a return of a character that's a little more silent and doesn't need to talk more than he needs to. I would prefer his motives to be me more arbitrary, where you don't know if he's a good or bad guy. Someone a bit mysterious and not talking about his feelings a lot and bickering.

Having said that if we see another concentrated GTA that's focused on one city again and is more story focused than feature focused I will be slightly disappointed and here's the key... If you dislike San Andreas' story, you still had one of the best video-game play-grounds to play on etc. A bit like V. The story was a bit sh*t but because of Online and all the features they brought back, the place was a fun play-ground. So it's win win. But if we get GTA IV.5 and you don't particularly enjoy the story, then you aren't left with as much. Arguably. That's how I think people felt.

TLDR: I never really disliked any character, unless I didn't have beef with the game. If the game is good, I'd find someway to enjoy the protag.

Marcus Fenix from Gears of War. One of my favorite game series yet I loathe the protagonist, everything being irritating about him from his voice to his protagonist. Just a really generic "badass" tough guy that I never cared a lick about across all three main series games. Don't even get me started on having to play as his son in the upcoming Gears of War 4.

Totally, but all Gears of War NPC's were freaking tacky and boyhood fantasy guns-blazing American heroes on steroids, so the protagonist did fit in.

I'm also not incredibly fond of Adam Jensen from Deus Ex, I get that he's slightly emotionless and has been a secret agent/half-robot for most of his life, so that's he's always straight to the point is cool, but WHY IS HE SO DUMB

Literally every game is him being betrayed/lied to by his superiors, like he couldn't have seen it coming with his intelligence and social augments.

I couldn't play GoW because of those Republican Space Ranger looking dudes with big square jaws and the little stubble thing under the lip. Super-cheesy.

Totally agree about Jensen. Really want a GTA protag that's more emotionless and ambiguous like him.

Didn't KZ3 feature sections of the campaign where you played as Helghast? It's the only KZ I never got to play, it just seemed too much of a KZ2.5 to be worth it imo.

No. You're playing as Sev the whole game. In the very beginning he's disguised as helghast.

Michael De Santa was f*cking annoying, just a whiny middle age sh*t with a cliche family and not a single relatable or interesting problem, could someone tell me why the f*ck this loser has fans?

A few that come to mind;

Niko Bellic, GTA IV.

Annoying, whiny middle aged c*nt.

Cliche family.

Not a single relatable or interesting problem.

*ahem*

Cognitive dissonance with the overarching plot.

Not to mention the fandom's reverence for a character, who in reality, isn't really any better written than any other GTA protags in terms of how it fits in with the overall puzzle. Especially protags like Luis. But that's not really a fault of a character, so whatever.

While their appearances were all very macho, a lot of the cast had interesting, distinguished personalities. Such as Baird being the comic relief of the group, along with Cole while Dominic had backstory of wanting to find his missing wife, creating sympathy for the character. Marcus's voice was obnoxious enough (although I loved the actor's work with Bender in the Futurama series, I didn't like it being applied to Marcus Fenix) but throughout all three video games I never cared for his motivations, even when his father was discovered to be alive.

He fit in, but was still a lame hollow shell of a character unlike most of the others.

C'mon, is ok if you hate IV fans,if you found Niko whiny or you consider him a case of narrative dissonance but comparing him to Michael is not cool at all. Avenging your old army friends is way cooler than being the bitch to the FIB and keeping together a lame family.

Niko is also way less of a whiny c*nt and a more likeable individual that Michael, even Roman who's a sex pest gambling addict who abuses your inbox is way more tolerable and a more possitive presence than these insufferable c*nts:

I know i've said i wasn't gonna to change your mind and i definetly not going to do it with this post but concede he's above Michael.

It wasn't a comparison so much as that those particular gripes are also true of Niko, depending which side you sit on. Avenging one's army buddies might be 'cool' but it's also about the most cliche f*cking narrative going around -former soldier obtaining vengeance against superior officer has already been done in GTA, no less- and executed poorly here (done much better elsewhere). The family dynamic could have been interesting but V's story was shot in the leg by the cocaine addled Sam Houser before it even got out the gate.

The net result is that I've only bothered to play through both games once each, respectively.

CJ. At the time I didnt mind him because I was into the story and didnt wanna ruin it by disliking him and stuff but he is just a bland character. Thats about it.. every other game that i've played had a protagonist that I liked. Guess I just know how to choose my games.

I agree with y'all about Connor from AC3 and Aiden from Watch Dogs. They were both petty boring in my opinion. I also didn't like Luis from TBoGT at all. He annoyed me while playing as him.

Another one that comes to mind is Cole McGrath from Infamous 2. I liked his character in the first game but his character in the second game was corny. I didn't like all of the humor that they made him have in the second game. I much prefer the more serious Cole in the first infamous game.

Aidan Pierce from Watchdogs WORST PROTAGONIST EVER

While I don't dislike him John Marston yup I said it I didn't dig the whole I'm not a killer no more but he kills anyway lots of people hate Niko for it but John Marston did the same thing. I still enjoyed his story though and RDR was amazing.

Trevor Philips, Aiden Pierce, Connor (AC3), Delsin Rowe. These are the first that come to mind as they're recent, but seriously, in the last 10 years, it's much, much quicker to list the handful of characters I haven't minded playing as. There's no characters I've particularly enjoyed playing as, just levels of tolerance. Actually, no, that's not true. I enjoyed playing as John Marsden and Joel in TLOU. Maybe I need to be a proper rugged man to enjoy the experience, must be that.

CJ post Los Santos was awful & annoying. Should have stayed in his element.

Because I'm a whiny middle aged sh*t with a cliche family.

From the same game, different angle I found Franklin to be boring and one note and Trevor just a collection of sh*tty edgy memes packed into one profiled design for 13 year old kids. GTA V would be infinitely better if Trevor and everyone he palled around with was deleted en mass (except Wade) and they just replaced him with Lamar.

Lamar and Wade, that'd be a team.

Shock horror I disagree with Osho!! Niko is the greatest video game character in the history of mankind in my honest opinion, but each to their own. :)

Anyway, I thought the protagonist in Saints Row 2 was a major dick, an arrogant bully who didn't have the charisma to back it up.

Jason from Far Cry 3 was OK but very unconvincing, one minute he's some frightened American kid the next he's Rambo, his brother grant would have been more convincing.

Aiden from WD Was bland, which is a shame because most of the other characters in watch dogs I liked Jordi, Iraq, lucky Quinn, were all cool characters but Aiden was not even unlikeable in fact he was OK but just very uninteresting and meh.

If you want to put it like that, one could argue that the difference between CJ being a bitch and Niko being bitch, one was willingly being a bitch, the other had no choice. But I don't want to open that can of worms, lol.
