Happy Holidays from the GTANet team!

Would you play a futuristic/sci-fi setting?

Now, before anyone whines about GTA not being Saint Row, I am only suggesting a setting with higher levels of technology than today, doesn't mean it needs to be over-the-top silly. We can still have a serious and slightly realistic story line.

That being said, would you object to a Grand Theft Auto title with a setting around, say, 2040-2050? The biggest downside is that it will be harder to parody things since we obviously don't know what the 2040s and 50s will be like. But do you think it could be done and still feel like a GTA game?

Would you love the idea, hate it, or would you be indifferent? What would be the pros and cons of such a setting?

No,I wouldn't really be interested in that,I'd be happiest with a setting in the 1970s or 1980s.The problem with futuristic setting is that it would all be based on speculation (they would have to make up gangs, vehicles, weapons, fashion, music, architecture...).Maybe they could make some other open world game with a futuristic setting, but in my opinion GTA should be set in either the present or the recent past decades.

In one word, no.

GTA 2 pulled it off just fine, but at this point it would be a lot different because of self driving cars etc.

Nope. I dislike sci-fi, coupled with the fact GTA is an established franchise based around crime, usually contemporary. Period settings worked because they were also heavily influenced by real-life events from those eras. A GTA in a futuristic setting would feel more like Saints Row IV than GTA, yep... even with just an enhanced tech approach, it'd feel completely out of place. I just believe each gaming franchise should stick to their own fundamental cores and perfect them rather than jumping to extremes. Plus, imagine the soundtrack - 70% dub step, 20% auto-tune singing, and 10% remixes of the dub step songs by different dub step artists. Not thanks.

Absolutely! Perhaps not for a 'main' title, but if R* had a lot of spare time on it's hands I don't see why they couldn't do a 'concept' title.

I probably won't like it, but I'd still play it. I'd probably still get it on release day cause it's still Rockstar and GTA.

No.

Not interested in the idea at all. To me, it just wouldn't feel like GTA.

If done in GTA way but as a separate non-GTA title, most definitely.

Yeah I'm fine if its a new IP and just follows the GTA formula like Red Dead Redemption but as part of the series it wouldn't fit at all.

A sci fi game from Rockstar would definitely be interesting though

Simply put, no. By setting something in the future, particularly a video game, you're already dating it. Aside from GTA 2, no GTA has ever been set in a time frame further ahead than our own. Not only is it easier to spoof something that already exists, but each GTA game provides a snapshot for cultural attitude depending on the time frame of the setting. Each release has had an atmosphere relatable in some manner because it has either already happened, or is currently happening. We feel more tethered to the game because we understand and recognise what's being parodied and for the humour, this is important. Sure, comedy and sci-fi can go well together and it's easy to throw around jokes about hover boards and food in tubes, but it's a different brand of humour altogether.

I would, yes, but only if they do it either in a dystopian or a utopian way. Also, hovering cars and stuff. Would add much to the atmosphere if you could deliver a Blade Runner feeling.

I think a near future GTA would be acceptable say 10 years into the future from present, but anything beyond that would feel weird.

GTA 2 had a retro futurism feel which was cool, but it was a very unique style which R* pulled off well for the time.

I agree with the others that the problem with a future-esqe GTA it would be harder to convey parodies and such. I wouldn't have an issue with a near future GTA, but preferably I would rather the past or the present.

On the whole, no. Perhaps a spin-off title could have some excellent execution.

If it wasn't a GTA game, but was a Sci Fi game by Rockstar, I'd be interested. GTA has no place in Sci Fi. They could make an excellent sci fi game but it wouldn't be a GTA game. It, to my mind, can't escape the fact that it is set in modern or recent past times.

The near future setting of GTA 2 was a real detractor for me.

Remember not everyone plays GTA for the parodies. It's not the essence of the game.

Yeah I didn't even mention the parodies but OK. What I'm saying is that it needs to be a "familiar" setting and the future can't do that. GTA's core experience comes from being in a city that feels real, and familiar, and like somewhere you have seen in real life or in countless movies. Sci Fi settings can't provide that.

And that's why I'm fine with the idea of a Rockstar-made sci fi game, but I feel that would work better if it weren't a GTA game.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

nice imagination bro. the moment you wrote "dub step" was the moment I knew You may have no clue what are you talking about

oh, and not all futuristic music sounds like dubstep you may know :)

Pretty much this.

A future/sci-fi GTA wouldn't be a GTA for me even if I really enjoy it. I would like to see Rockstar do something like that. A retro-futuristic game would be nice.

Hey Rockstar, wanna do a game of Escape From New York? Just like you nailed The Warriors..
