Oil Reserves, Running Out?

Aqua

So with the possibility we may run out of oil in the next 30-50 years ish....

Assumption:

  • If consumed at current rates

Sources and info:

So if you're reading this and you're under 40 or so you're going to be one of the ones around when it does run out.... Can you imagine it.... no planes... no boats.... (probably still cars though) Anyway what do you think about oil running out anyway? I was going to post in I have a question but I wanted to try and get some discussion going on this subject...

I heard a similar number (30 years) when I was in middle school. In the early 90's.

It's all bullsh*t.... not sure "Worldmeters" is the best vetted source.

No worries, everything will be powered by something else no problem like electric or whatever.

You worry too much. :)

Don't worry, much of the world will already be uninhabitable by then. It's called progress.

We will probably use other inventions then. Its not like the oil companies let other ways of living flourish when you can be spending your money on oil.

Nice to see a vintage meme coming back. Wasn't there a "dude no oil lol" period during the 70s that was completely wrong?

I'm the 70s we were going to run out in the late 80s. In the 80s. It was the year 2000 and in the 90s it was 2020.

It will run out eventually but I won't be alive when it does. So I don't really care about the damage the reulting fallout will cause because I will be safe and sound 6 feet under.

ITT: People that legitimately think oil is an infinite resource or some sh*t.

They did not say stupid sh*t like "dude no oil lol" in the 70's. That is a recent millennial stain on the language/culture.

It's not.

But putting all the carbon that is currently in the earth up in the atmosphere certainly IS f*cking the planet.

Are you guys saying the OPEC stuff from the 70's was the world running out of oil? It was just 'controls'...not a supply concern.

I wasn't driving in the 70's but I remember having to sit in gas lines and the whole even/odd days of service based on the last digit on you license plate.

I like to think we've made some major strides on becoming less dependant on fossil fuels.

Past predictions were incorrect, ergo, any other predictions are automatically incorrect.

Sound logic.

Current predictions are also incorrect because they are based solely on proven oil reserves. Technology will continue to progress. Fracking will expand. The recoverable oil reserves will continue to grow. And the "dry date" will continue to rise. We won't run out in 37 years. Edited by gtamann123

Either way, I sincerely hope that the reason we stop being so dependant on non-renewables isn't just because we burned through the lot of 'em.

There's some fun stuff happening in the middle east with its oil, but I doubt petty things like "other countries' complex issues" will get in the way of modern society's dependence, so eh.

We'll run out a lot sooner if you two continue to use it as lube.

Uncle Sikee Atric

Roll on Hydrogen Fuel Cell tech.... Let's find a way to mass produce the required quantities and oil for petroleum use will be redundant.

Eventually Hydrogen Fusion tech will solve the looming power issues, but a safe and reliable way to harness it is about 50 years off I guess. Hydrogen Fuel Cells will be the bridging stopgap in the interim.

From reading previous post it seem that this is most likely not going to happen in 37 years. ( Because I am able to trust every source on the internet mind you /sarcasm ) but if it does that is still well within my lifetime. I am curious as to how the world would look like without oil. What types of alternate energy would we use? How will the airline industry adapt? What about the space industry? I don't know, but those sure will be interesting times.

Cool story bro, going to speed up the process a bit today by driving around my V8 Firebird later today.

Nucular power is the way to go.

Too bad people will probably riot over nuclear power stations because they're 'dangerous!' even though they're far safer and cleaner.

Or just LFTR, dawg, dunno why it isn't more used.

Quite aside from the questions of the validity of the estimates, we've already reached a point where fuels produced from non-oil sources are commercially viable.

As the costs for extracting oil increase, the comparative costs of other fuels decreases. Things like liquefied natural gas are already beginning to replace oil in many places. So, even if we do run out of oil (which we won't as their estimates are based on known extractable reserves and don't take into account what hasn't been explored or demonstrated extractable) there's plenty of stuff we can burn instead.

But yes, nuclear for power generation all the way.
