Sergiu
I guess everyone loves the journey but people are less interested in witnessing the ending of it all, because it isn't glorious. In prison, in a coffin or in a nursing home or a village in Sicily, living your last days with the ghosts that haunt you. People love action, but what is there when action ends? ...the realization of our own mortality and a self reflection on our deeds which now come back to haunt us... Just like the ending to The Sopranos and Godfather Part III, The Irishman is divisive because it presents nasty concepts that people would rather not think about. Being vulnerable, getting slower, losing things and eventually dying without a dramatic ending, just like that, while the world will still go on with or without Tony Soprano, Michael Corleone or Jimmy Hoffa, Frank Sheeran and definitely without us, the humble viewer. In conclusion, Martin Scorsese, just like Francis Ford Coppola before him, were never understood by most people because they want us to face the fact that when we die we do not go out with a bang, but a whimper. And that is The Irishman. Edited November 30, 2019 by Sergiu Jago, Mister Pink, Lonely-Martin and 1 other
Sergiu
Yeah, it is funny because if you want to compare The Irishman to Goodfellas you could only ever put it by the side of the ending of Goodfellas. The part that people aren't comfortable talking about and often forget about. The Irishman is basically 3.5 hours worth of that from Marty to us. Awful Waffle
people will say it's too long or that the ending has no pacing. to me it felt like 90 minutes and I still wanted more. the ending was incredible. painfully realistic and nihilistic. sad but sincere. contemplative but anxious. the story of a simple man who - through simple actions - changed the course of human history, affecting multiple facets of culture and society, with ripples still being felt to this day. wanted zero recognition. did it all for his family. died alone. incredible. you don't have to compare The Irishman to other gangster films. or Marty's other films. or any other film for any other reason. it's an outstanding modern classic with timeless performances by some all-time favorite actors. reminds me how much I miss Joe Pesci and wish he weren't retired. reminds me how much I despise vapid comic book super hero movies cluttering every possible channel of film and TV. but that's off topic and irrelevant. thank god for flicks like The Irishman. Mister Pink
Yeah, I enjoyed the last 30 minutes too. Especially since Sheeran defies all odds given the business he was in. The Sopranos and Goodfellas both touched on the subject. There's only two ways you leave this life. You go in the can, or you get whacked. Instead we see him, a pitiful man, older, and perhaps wiser - soon realising that the consequences of his actions on his family. This is life after a life of crime. Jason
Really, really enjoyed it. I was a bit worried by the length but at no point did I feel like it dragged on at all, not one of the scenes were too long. As others have basically said, the de-aging was the only drawback I have for the film. They didn't quite nail it and it was iffy in a few areas, one being that De Niro looks 50 for what I gathered is a character in his 20-30's. That shopkeeper scene also was like.. yea, that aint a young man doing that, it looked pretty awkward. The time jumps were also a little bit confusing as I don't know the actual story and the years the events took place so it took me a second to figure out when a time jump had happened. I just don't think De Niro is very good at kicking arse, lol. In Goodfellas when him and Joe Pesci kill Frank Vincent in the bar, De Niro's stomping looks a bit poor with how it was filmed too. He can look the part so well though, proper mean sod in Cape Fear, but more a threat than a force, at least against blokes. (Though I need to re-watch Cape Fear as it's been bloody ages). Awful Waffle
the de-aging technology doesn't really work when it's only applied to the facial animations - for lack of better phrasing. DeNiro looked younger around the eyes. that's great. but he still had those giant old-man-ears. he still had old-man-hunch in his step. body doubles shot from behind were still painfully obvious. still an amazing film. but it is what it is. Has it really been 30 years already..? “ you don’t know how fast time goes by until you get there”. f*ck me what a melancholy film. Loved it, bit of perspective helps to get the sentiment, I’ve only got half that of these OldFellas (god, they really are) but it already resonates. “ I remember, that night in May...”

Being a mafia goon was more like a job and less like an adventure (realting to the mundane realism of Mafia 2). Such projects aren't afraid to tone down the high octane action and focus on daily routine which is why I cannot praise Scorsese enough for this movie. That's right. There's no glamour to being a gangster in this movie. It's treated as just a thing that some people are, not something aspirational or inspirational. Not the opposite of that either. The movie's not trying to beat you over the head with some type of lesson like "crime doesn't pay" and the like. For me, Robert De Niro will always be the greatest actor who ever lived. But Al Pacino stole this one. Incredible performance.
Algonquin Assassin
I finally got a round to seeing this and all I have to say is... I was a bit worried about the length, but honestly it flew by in no time. Didn't even feel like 3 1/2 hours. Didn't drag on, pacing was on point. Just brilliant. Star-Lord
I absoloutely loved this movie, it's the type of film that will never bored you no matter how many times you watch it. I like how it draws you in and keeps you there without you wanting to blink. The acting delivery of all mayor players like Deniro,Pacino, Pesci was truly convincing and outstanding, and would even go as far as saying, they're best work till now. It's a different point of view of all the movies i've seen in this genre and for that it's quite unique and surely a modern masterpiece. Awful Waffle
the technology they invented for this film still amazes me. it will soon be capable of rendering in real-time. deepfakes on another level.
