some of the nicest doggos ive met have been those breeds that are looked down upon, my friend has a staffy and he's the most chill woofer i've met sh*t my shihtzus probably more aggressive.

@Cez, I don't know how your town, or city, is but I'd make sure to check to see what breeds are allowed for your area if they ban certain breeds. Where I use to live, Pitbulls and other "dangerous dog" breeds weren't allowed within the city limits and if they learned that you had one of those breeds, you could face a hefty fine as well as have your dog taken from you. They were strict and loved to fine you for anything. I had gotten a few fines for letting my yard grow past the height that was acceptable, which was barely past your ankle.

 

I've owned three Pitbulls in my lifetime and only one of them was problematic and had to be put down when he killed my sister's dog.

 

The first one that I owned was very protective but also very loving and gentle. He died from cancer sadly. The third one that I owned was just a big ole baby and very loving but very high strung. Since my backyard wasn't secure enough to let him run around in, I ended up giving him to some friends.

Pitbulls are pretty much outright banned in the UK, along with another three fighting dog breeds. Technically you can own them, but you need a special dangerous dogs license.

Personally I think it's all sh*t; there's no such thing as a dangerous dog breed, only dangerous owners.

Ces: There are plenty of great dogs in shelters. Bull breeds have a horrid reputation but are usually fantastic with people. They tend to be awful wih other dogs but they're a fine pet if you've no other animals on the house (this is why they're so popular in certain UK regions).

My mom's chiuahuah's are more vicious and dangerous than any pitbull and rottweiler that I have ever met. Usually the smaller dog's are the more aggressive ones in my opinion lol

I don't care about any of that, in fact I dislike how important breed specifics are to some people.

It's a personal choice. I won't buy from a breeder regardless of reputation. Of course some breeders are trustworthy, others aren't. I won't buy a dog from a breeder whilst there are overflowing shelters filled with dogs that may end up dying there

 

Trip - I've thought about that, right now it's just a matter of not being able to travel far. Once I'm driving I can travel without any hassle to specific shelters.

Again, knowing me, if I see a dog whose been in a shelter for a long time, or has had an especially difficult background, I'm likely to adopt them instead.

 

I made it sound like the breed is the most important factor, I did not mean it to sound like that at all. I just have a soft spot for large dogs and dogs that have a not so squeaky clean reputation. I feel like I'm helping if I adopt dog like that.

I'd find it hard to visit a cat shelter because I'd just want to foster them all. The last cat I adopted was blind, so I have a soft spot for the "disabled" ones. It feels good knowing you're giving them a loving home when most would overlook them because they don't look "pretty" enough.

My last cat would actually climb in my lap and then lay it's arm on my shoulder like it was hugging me. If I didn't pet it, it would dig it's claws into my shoulder until I started petting it. It would hide and be anti-social until it got comfortable around any strangers. Although It was also addicted to cat treats. If it heard the bag be moved in any way, the cat would come flying into the room and would be all lovey towards whoever made the bag make a noise, even if you were a stranger, until you gave him some cat treats. He would keep meowing until you gave him his kitty crack. He was still a asshole though!

I prefer dogs to cats simply because cats are disloyal f*ckers while dogs are usually very loyal. My friend's cat went missing and didn't return home for like three weeks. Turns out he was at a house near by who were feeding it a lot so it just f*cked off there.
