When I'm drawing, I sit on the floor.

I miss old days when my bed was my "chair" with my laptop over it, I was working as webmaster.

Have you ever developed a set of beliefs and tried discussing it with other people that share them, only to realize just how immature and divided they are and making you realize those beliefs were bogus all along?

Yes, I’m being intentionally vague here.

TL;DR: I have, and most of the time I value the experience highly, for it helps me separating personal beliefs that are truly my own, negotiated somewhere between heart and head, and to which I can stand, from someone else's dogma I have adapted or just got used to, but that I obviously cannot really relate to.

I must be vague too, I see :)

I usually dwell on ideas, say a new political agenda or a nice piece of spiritual formula, or maybe some sci-fi techno-babble, on my own for quite some time, quite unwilling to share (it's an Autism thing), and only at a rather late-ish time of that process do I seek out if there are like-minded people to discuss the matter at hand, to fill in some blanks, find encouragement, field test the novel bits, "spread the news" etc.

I then often get very frustrated when I see groups are promoting the same ideas (at least outwardly), which is a relief at first, but the same time often corrupt their ideals by vain quarreling and egotism, or just that one point showing they have the right picture, but are in fact holding it upside down, at least this being how I perceive it, and are not willing to discuss anything really that could bring change. What is the sense in discourse then, if not for the reflection and possible improvement of one's ideas?

Result: I start doubting me, or them, mostly both.

It's what very often prevents me from eventually connecting to people that seem on my line of thinking. It's the same reason why I only grudgingly accept someone could be "on my side", based only upon (s)he uses the same words - but probably meaning something else entirely. I sometimes envy, honestly, people who find a sense of security and identification in superficial consent, or even of "everybody says so". This has never been good enough for my hungry thinking machine, and consequentially, I've been standing apart for most of my life.

(And of course I fully realize any groups haven't exactly waited for the "wise woman" to descend upon them from her cloud, either, and that I can come over quite arrogant … there is a reason why I'm a rather secluded person, yes)

One should always accept that things may look rather good and right one moment, and utterly stupid the next. If you find yourself in a situation where you finally realize that you have been living those "bogus beliefs" that you've been speaking of - maybe you have somewhat adapted them from somewhere else, that they are not truly your own - you might feel grateful for the crisis, for many people never reach that point.

If people were more willingly doubting their convictions on the basis of seeing how truly alienating others of the same convictions behave, most organizations of, say, religious, political, and even some scientific institutions would have long run out of members. However, they are still around, so I can only assume that most people simply do not care.

So I hope your experience, whatever it was, holds some encouragement 👍

I get you, Lucy. That describes my experience quite well.

I have been getting myself into a certain social circle involving a niche yet somewhat known youtuber. I like his videos, they’re super informative, and he’s a great person all around. I’ve been educating myself with his material, the material he reads, the intellectual sources he provides, and generally offshooting to other individuals and sources about the hot topics in this circle.

I didn’t participate in his streams until I was sure I knew enough. I acknowledged I wouldn’t know everything, but I’d know some important things and bridge these things with more facts I have acquired. The first time I went into a stream was rather good, some mature discussion was had, and I got some of my questions answered.

The third stream, however, was different. The guy himself was still knowledgeable and informative, but the majority of people who follow him in the stream were super stubborn. They’re tired of having their ideas fallaciously mocked by other circles for being so picky and hypocritical, but when the discussion becomes about the champion of their beliefs, they do a 180 and start dissing it as if it was a mere bastardization of their beliefs and not a true example, thus proving the other circles right. Hell, even the youtuber was agreeing with them that the biggest example of their belief was a failure, but it was an “attempt”. When I disagreed with the stream, they were appalled. The streamer himself didn’t participate in my debacle, nor did he pay any attention  to it until it ended, so this is mostly directed at his viewers.

I’ve tried presenting counter-arguments, pointing out the hypocrisies, and maybe getting a bit too hotheaded here and there, but I know that I’m in the right in this discussion. These people truly hate the strawmans and half-asses mockery they receive from their enemies, but here they are, parroting the words of the reactionary people who have zero knowledge on the subject. I haven’t asked them to be total tryhard defenders of the “failure”, but f*cking hell, it’s literally the most successful example of it ever. If you keep denying every single attempt at your beliefs, every single person that fought for it, every single movement that tries to get it recognized, do you even deserve a platform when people can’t take someone as defensive and deflective as you seriously?

After all of that, I’ve been called with derogatory nicknames, and someone even blocked me for disproving their blatantly false argument. I’ll admit to not being a saint since I did call some people stupid and dumb, but come on, blocking someone over something as petty as that?

If this circle keeps staying divided and deflective, there’s zero hope for it, and that is convincing me to leave that ideology behind for good. I’ll still hold a lot of its aspect since I do believe in them, but people sure do suck.

^ sounds indeed an unhealthy group, and I don't speak about their agenda, which I don't know. Regardless of whether I agree to an opinion or not, I think any discussion should be held in a respectful manner when it is apparent that my "opponent" shows commitment to his ideas. I might find every single one of them ludicrous, even dangerously insane, but I should respect they are important to that other person - and if I'm so sure I'm so absolutely beyond-any-doubt-right, well, it should be easy enough to make my case, without resorting to cheap tricks, shouldn't it?

But there is seldom a clear "right" or "wrong", and if two ideologies find themselves diametrically opposed, we too often loose sight of there being probably other options beyond.

Groups that solely dwell on opposition, on preying upon their selected opponent's failures instead of building up solid arguments around a positive agenda, fail to see this chance of development, and thus ultimately fail their own cause.

When I'm preparing some novel thesis, I often start at trying to prove the opposite.

And I find the mocking of opponents as means for discussion absolutely despicable.

ooops, I'm slipping into ranting, good this is just "Random Chat" 😀

And anyway, this is me just talking big again. Bravo, Lucy - for three times even in this forum I've been just retreating entirely from discussion as soon as the other side got salty. I'm too much a coward to stand conflict, so whatever your quarrel was about, I respect that at least you tried and stood up to your cause, and so should you.

^ Ok, I've been fighting my curiosity for some days and finally lost:

Who is "she"? The same you keep adoring for months now, the one you get "jealous, when strangers talk to her" about? Have you ever actually asked her out, talked about your feelings to her?

Please take no offense by me asking this, but to be honest, I'm a bit undecided whether I find these posts cute, like the dedicated, loving way you talk about your paintings; or slightly creepy, like the obsessive way you talked about those death videos.

I hope you see my concerns. Peace 🖖

Went on a date with this girl, who has a lot of pleasant qualities, and two huge dealbreakers. So like, we ended up playing Scattegories and the letter "N" was rolled. Without missing a beat at soon as the letter came up she shouts "ni**er!" That was the first one.

Later on in the evening during conversation she mentioned that she doesn't like feral cats and thinks they should all be killed. Around my house there are a lot of feral alley cats, and every day I put food out for them and be nice to them. I asked her if she was serious about the cats, and she said she was, and her argument was that she thinks they sometimes attack people and carry diseases. This has never ever been my experience. All of the alley cats just run away if you try to get anywhere near them. They don't hurt people. They are just innocent creatures trying to survive. I was like, "well, I really love cats sooo..." and she's like, "Oh me too!" and I'm like, "But you have no problem killing feral ones?" And she's like ,"No. I don't."

I asked her out for a second date, but I'm not sure, I don't feel like I should throw the baby out with the bathwater, but I don't think I'm going to be able to get past this.

What do you think, internet?

I can't go anywhere without hearing 'IT'S COMING HOME'. Was at work yesterday mopping the floor, a BTP officer (I clean there, I'd never join the filth) walks in, starts peeling an orange near the bin, and shouts 'IT'S COMING HOME' to someone through door.

Throw the baby out, drink the water and burn the tub. There's red flags waving and it's a foul breeze. Don't waste your time. She sounds like one of these girls that thinks her edge will score her brownie points when really she just looks like a twat.

Every person is unique. You can't expect them to be 100% good and kind (i don't say that this isn't possible though), so if you're starting a romantic relationship, be prepared for underwater stones.
To calm you down, my couple is attracted to knives. Guess what things come in my mind after DDLC?

^ I agree it's a bit different when those - indeed quite inevitable - "underwater stones" emerge during any relationship. Humans are very deep waters to begin with, and intimacy of any kind sooner or later reveals any scars.

However, what if a new information, even a small one, is so disturbing that you have to check yourself how it relates to the other qualities? If it cannot be done away as a case of good qualities outweighing a faulty one, because said qualities maybe have been suddenly exposed as mere fakes in the face of the recent revelation?

@Cutter De BlancThis can not be dealt with by logic alone, so you need to rely on instinct, and that is a good advisor. And when such a question arises on the first date, and you already feel the red flags being waved around in your brain, do tread careful is good advice. By all means give her that second date, if you feel like it, and those other qualities call for it (including the "deal breakers", I'm not judging ☺️) Maybe she was just nervous, and you say stupid things when you're nervous and want to show off as being tougher than you're feeling, and you even insist later on the stupid things you said when you are also leaning a bit to the stubborn side.

Side note, to the incident in particular: Personally, I find the cat thing a very big no-go. Not only because i like cats. I am not blind to the problem of feral animals in cities, but the argument "Some cause problems, so remove all" is genuinely stupid - and it echoes through many discussions these days - and disrespectful towards life. You really should clarify that point.
