Not only in airlines, either. I've seen very few student pilots, instructors, etc. About 1 in 20 across the board.

 

Which is strange. Flying is not that involved. If you can learn to drive a car on a freeway, you can learn to fly a plane - private or commercial. Just takes longer. And while I can see biological factors making this more attractive to males, I can't imagine that accounting for more than 1:4 difference at the worst. So there must be a cultural bias there. Never heard any of the girls learning to fly complain about unfair treatment, so I'm guessing it's more about popular culture making piloting a plane sound like a more attractive career for males.

 

On a side note, I don't think I've encountered a female CFI who doesn't teach aerobatics. Once they are in, they tend to go all in. Which, I suppose, is a natural response to such gender disparity.

 

Also, seems like a good place to mention Kim Campbell.

Can confirm that this is all cultural business. I also want to become a pilot, but every single time I even mention it people (mostly girls) start looking at me in a weird fashion, as if I said "i wannabe a hooker". Then they start bullsh*tting me about how "dis a man-only shiet!".

 

Yo, no job should be restricted to men/women-only (unless the specified job can only be done 100% right by a certain sex/gender, i.e Construction requires some serious physical strength, if a woman can handle it go on but don't expect many females to roll in). Piloting is no exception.
