I once had to return some type of office furniture that was totally missing an important part for assembly. they never asked the reason why I was returning it so I stood there like, some sucker might get the same item with the same problem.

 

Don't they ship faulty items back to the manufacturer?

 

and does anybody else know the panic when they try to return a truly faulty item and all of a sudden it stops being faulty when you're trying to prove it is to the sales person?

idk, even if they did the manufacture wouldn't know what was wrong with it since they didn't ask me. i think its cause the items are so cheap, walmart can take a nickle loss just to maintain happy customers.

Manufacturers tend to have refurbishing departments or sub-contractors. In many cases, like with furniture, it's considered less expensive to just take return items, take them apart, get all the parts in good condition, and repackage them into full kits again than it is to deal with customer support and figure out what's wrong with returns.

I once returned a little outdoor cooking grill because it was missing a vital piece for assemply. When I returned it they just opened a fresh one - grabbed the part - made mine complete. Of course the open one stayed there for the next customer to purchase (with missing piece). And the circle of life continues.
