HMT83
Hey guys, a little help needed please... I'm new to PC gaming and I've been a console junkie all my life, got my mitts on my brothers 'old' system and was assured it could run pretty much 'any game out there'... I ran a system check that showed I was well above the minimum requirements for the game but slightly below the 'recommended' hardware. So it 'should' be ok at mid level. My system is... AMD FX 6100 @3.30ghz 2x Nvidia GTX 295 dual graphics cards at just below 1.7gb (3.5gb total) 16gb DDR3 Windows 10 x64 Fresh install of windows with all updates and drivers up to date... Now, the problems... When I first installed the game it told me I missed the minimum requirements, but this was due to the graphics cards not being set for dual use and the game was only detecting 1 half of 1 card (896mb). The game booted up and dumped me on 800x600 with everything on low or off. I put all the settings to ultra and the game said I would need just over 2gb vram to run. After setting up the cards I had around 3.5gb to play with, but the game still dumped me in 800x600 with everything off, with the settings put to ultra, the game now wanted just over 8gb to run! After a bit of research, I understand the graphics cards are a bit outdated and I can't get the Nvidia 'GTAV beta driver' so I'll be upgrading to an R9 290X (will a single card be fine?)... But surely 3.5gb of vram would be enough to at least populate the map? I can turn off the limits and run the game at the highest resolution with ultra settings, but I then get 11fps! So, is there anything I can do to get the game running a little better than what looks like Atari 1200 graphics while maintaining a useable frame rate? Also, if I should be upgrading anything, what's recommended? Thanks in advance
SilverRST
Did your brother said that? Maybe he's still living under a prehistoric rock or he's talking out of his butthole but the GTX295 is a DX10.0 card and that's also why you can't set all settings on ultra. Some settings requires DX11 for high to ultra settings. GTX295 is a dual GPU, so you're basically have 4 GPU's in SLi. GTX295 is a terrible card. You'll be much better with a 290X and it has a full 4GB. The 3.5GB is the GTX970. However, I'm not sure how your FX6100 will cope with a high-end GPU like the 290X and GTX970. FX CPU's are not that really powerfull.
HMT83
He didn't quite say that in as many words, but it was inferred! haha I will be ordering the 290X very soon, will now also look into a newer CPU, will the FX 8320 4.0ghz handle things or am I better looking at the 9590 4.7ghz? (I know you said the FX was poor, but I at least know the MB will run it) Thanks for the advice though, nice one

Yeah you have them SLI, but 2 cards does not double the amount of VRAM you have, they still operate at 1.7GB max. Your CPU is passable, and you have a decent amount of RAM, but if you want to run this game properly you need a GTX-760 at least for medium settings. A single 760 is 5x more powerful than a single 295.
HMT83
I knew they were a bit older but thought they might run things ok... Will be dumping them soon in favour of an R9 290X 4gb. The CPU will be upgraded at a later date to something a bit modern and I'll drop in another 16gb of ram, so eventually, it will be good enough. I guess this is why I've always been a console gamer haha
mahanddeem
Will be a waste to use 290x on that cpu. It'll be severely bottlenecked. You need a whole new system. If you want to play gta v on pc with reasonable settings.
