You know, I am actually thinking about giving Manhunt 2 another go. I remember I did one playthrough of it years ago and later sold the game because I wasn't too crazy about it. Looking back now, I think the game probably wasn't as bad as I thought it was. I remember I wasn't too crazy about the part when you played as Leo going up the building and shooting down a helicopter because it kind of took away from the overall feel of the game. I just need to get a new PS2 or get my PS3 fixed at least and then maybe I will buy this game again. I am sure it's cheap these days.

By the way, I still sometimes laugh about the lines from the hunters and from Starkweather from the first game. The line, "You're at it again. Chase me! Chase me! Just like a teenage girl" still cracks me up. Something tells me that Brian Cox gave it his all in that role. That guy is truly a good actor.

If you play Manhunt 2, play the PC version. The console versions are terribly cut down.

Ah Manhunt, easily my favorite Rockstar game just for it being a horror game that did legitimate frighten me when most others don't. When something scares me it is when it is a situation that can happen in real life. Having some psychotic escaped mental patient in a smiley face mask stalk you in the shadows COULD be a real scenario. Also playing the game on PC in full HD with EAX enabled really makes it a great experience.

Just noticed a small update patch for this on ps4. Can't seem to find any notes for fixes, ect, let alone mention of it even happening... would be nice to know what was fixed/changed.

America never banned it...that was the UK, Australia i think, and a bunch of smaller countries.

Not true. BBFC wanted to keep it banned, but their decision was overturned by a high court. As for Australia, Manhunt 2 was simply never submitted to the OFLC. Smart move. I think we have the ESRB to thank for the pliers > testicles removal, plus Leo's more "morally encouraging" guide (eg. "It was either them or you, remember that."), but it's true that America never banned it, even in its' original form, it was just going to get an AO rating, which means no PS2/Xbox AFAIK.

OFLC actually gave the first Manhunt MA15+ for medium level violence. Go figure. It was only banned after the whole Stefan Pakeerah thing in the UK, which the media irresponsibly promoted it as being obsessively played by Warren LeBlanc based from a single quote from Stefan's mother, when in fact it was Stefan who owned it in the first place. Neither of them were 18. I would put down $20 that Stefan's mother bought it for him and just didn't take an interest in what it was. My first copy of GTA III was purchased with parental supervision, but my mum never realized what the game was either, just not interested enough.

I just played the first game again in a long time. I honestly think it's Rockstar's most unique and atmospheric game. There's nothing that even comes close to it, really.

The whole Manhunt bullsh*t story was almost 10 years ago, where the most sensitive person would cry like a baby over this amount of brutality
I kind of hoped that it's changed today, but when HATRED released, again, many people whined about it.
If they ever want to make Manhunt 3, which I doubt they will due to past catfights, the solution would be is to make it Steam exclusive, as you wouldn't get it physically.

I would love to see a new one. I dont understand why people had a problem with the games. Sure they're violent but look at GTA. You can kill innocent people in GTA. They might insult you or try to pick a fight but at the end of the day they're still innocent. In the Manhunt games you kill bloodthirsty psychos who would kill you if given chance. They've done snuff film and an experiment gone wrong. What could they do next? I've seen someone on the project manhunt forums mentioned centering it around the mafia, but I don't know if that would work. The mafia aren't as relevant as they used to be. Maybe the cartel, human trafficking, or extremist militia group? If they do make a new one, hopefully they bring back gangs. Depending on which gang you face, they'll try to flank you. The more organized the gang is, the more challenging it will be when fighting them just like in Max Payne 3.

I love Manhunt, only played the first one but to this day it's still one of my favourite games of all-time. Too bad it doesn't work on my pc anymore. Scripted audio gets stuck on a loop forever, and the music loops a certain 30 seconds endlessly, makes it unbearable to play. Been trying to fix it on and off again for two years, but still nothing works. It's too bad R* just doesn't give a damn about any of its pc ports.

I’ve never played this game but I really want to. I’m saving up my coins to buy it on PSN 😁

So I’ve got a question. This game came out in 2003 and the wiki says Lionel Starkweather was successful in Los Santos in the 90’s. Is Los Santos explicitly mentioned in this game?

It's not, they mention he was successful in "Hollywood," but this game came out before San Andreas was even announced. It's set in the same universe as GTA, and like with III and VC mentioning real life cities and states, you can assume that any real places mentioned are retconned and they actually meant their fictional versions.

Manhunt 2, on the other hand, explicitly mentions San Fierro in the manual (it's where the protagonist is from), and San Andreas and Vice City are both mentioned by NPCs.

And course the shared car models and fictional brands (e.g Sprunk), as well as the fact that Carcer City was mentioned as a location as far back as GTA III.

I also just remembered, one of the websites in GTA IV sells the same kinds of medications that were seen on posters inside of the Project Laboratories in Manhunt 2. The legacy of Dr. Pickman lived on through spam emails trying to hawk his inventions and rip people off.

I really always thought it was neat how Manhunt was set in the same universe as GTA (and if a Newswire post from Halloween a few years back when they released the "PLEASE STOP ME" mask for Online is anything to go by, it took place in both the 3D and HD universes) without any direct references to each other within the stories, and with both games being radically different from each other. I kind of wish they did the same with Red Dead.

I'd say the original Manhunt is more likely set in the 3D Universe, if you put into account the mention of Gary Schaffer on Lips 106 and the heavy use of assets from III and VC that are scattered around. I also recall a SWAT member in the game mentions a place called "Cassidy’s Bargain Firearms" (obviously referring to Phil Cassidy). Carcer's mention in the HD Universe is probably just another case of R* reusing place names across different eras.

I always did like those little subtle easter eggs that connected R*'s games together, kind of like how Pixar always does in their films. The fact that RDR uses real-life place names however (e.g New York) kind of rules out it's connection to GTA, which I find strange since the Red Dead series in itself uses fictional locations. Kind of a missed opportunity imo.

So I was browsing Reddit and came across this thread that I found interesting. While it's just a fan theory that isn't meant to be taken too seriously, I think it's actually somewhat plausible despite the fact that Rockstar probably never had Manhunt 2's story in mind when developing web content for Vice City. Long story short, Kent Paul (who by 2002 is in a mental institution if his promo website is anything to go by) is a test subject of the Pickman Project from Manhunt 2. When you consider the fact that Manhunt 2 is most likely set in Florida (cars have Florida license plates and one of the cities Rockstar used for inspiration on Cottonmouth was Tampa) and that Kent Paul's mind is probably f*cked after years of drugs (and the effects he describes on his blog being similar to what happens to Danny in MH2), it wouldn't be too far of a reach I guess.

To be fair, Donald Love appears on a newspaper headline in IV, and then Love Fist exists in the HD era for sure (and we see the one member who was missing in VC, and he mentions the others who we did see). I don't think it'd be too out of reach to think that the Manhunt games could be set in both universes, but then besides the medications from Manhunt 2 (as well as the logo of the TV studio in the game) being seen in IV and then that one Newswire post advertising the Smiley mask, there's nothing to indicate that what happened in Manhunt also happened in the HD universe. I suppose it could go either way.

And I agree that RDR not being in the same universe as the HD era GTAs is a missed opportunity. Unlike other series like Midnight Club, Max Payne, and LA Noire, it really has no reason to not be in the same fictional world.

OK, just finished Manhunt 2, and didn't really like it. Loved the additions to the first one such as Weapon and Environmental Executions, but it lacked on bringing a really frightening atmosphere like the first one. Also, the controls sucked, plus, the fact that it was censored really made it look ugly

Liked the story, though

Had to dig deep for this thread but I'm actually playing through this right now on my PS4. Basically played it on a whim, as I was weirdly in the mood for a Stealth game. Granted, I'm f*cking terrible at Stealth games, but I always really dug the atmosphere and tension of this game and I want to get better at it and try to do the scenes on Hardcore with 5 Stars. I never was able to do anything like that back in the day.

Already having trouble with the AI because I just suck at anything like this, but I'm slowly improving. Sometimes they are pretty weird with their movements, but it is an old game.

I really forgot just how gruesome and brutal this game is. In a good way. It just nails the setting and atmosphere perfectly. Honestly I respect how ballsy Rockstar used to be, the game doesn't shy away and doesn't waste any time showing you what kind of experience you're in for. The sound design is really good for the time it released.

I've almost finished this game, got a few scenes left. Some thoughts considering this was a blind playthrough (for the most part):

1) The level design is simply top notch. Rockstar really nailed it. There is so many diverse levels. From the City streets, to a junkyard, to a prison, to an asylum. There's really a bit of everything here.

2) The game doesn't really know what it wants to be, which can be confusing at times. It starts off as hardcore stealth and then basically becomes an action game which is quite jarring. You basically have to use weapons or you get shredded.

3) Brian Cox is awesome, seriously some of the best voice acting I've heard. It's really noticeable in the quality difference with his performance and everyone else, who are really wooden. Especially the main character, not sure who voiced him but it's pretty bad.

4) The enemy design is cool. You do see a lot of the same of course, but I never felt like I was fighting too many of the same guys. You fight a lot of different types from crazy mask wearing psychos, mental nutcases, and police. It's cool.

5) The game is pretty damn replayable, I only managed to get 3 stars on most. I would like to try to get at least 4 stars on them. I think Hardcore will be too hard though. No radar sounds rough.

It is time ... first time ever playing this game ... let's see what all the fuss is about. 😁 PS.: I am not even 2 minutes into the game and I already fell in love with its atmosphere!

You're in for a sweet, bloody and gory ride, my friend

I'm not easily impressed by violence in media, but this game made me feel emotions no other Horror movie/game has ever accomplished, not even a bit
