UHD Universe?

So We've had the 2D, 3D, and HD universes. Now that 4k is becoming a bit more widespread, i would expect the next gta to be in UHD/4K . Here's a video of what GTA V looks like at 4K

.

Also, a PS4.5 is being developed, and supposedly it's going to support 4k games. See >http://kotaku.com/sources-sony-is-working-on-a-ps4-5-1765723053. Im not an expert, but i think you'd need a 4K display to run it smoothly (feel free to correct me).

Oh and here's an image at Crysis being run at 8K http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Crysis1.jpg

Firstly, the newer PS4 will almost certainly only be able to play 4K video, playing 4K games on cheaper console hardware is nigh on impossible, they can only just manage 1080p for modern games as it is.

Anyway, the universe thing was brought up to magic away the complications of explaining different city layouts and intertwining stories - unless they're returning to LC or LS (which they have 0 chance doing) there'd be no reason to wipe the history again just because they can manage better resolutions.

I could see them possibly pulling the universe thing again when they have far higher tech capabilities; however, the HD cities are fairly decent as they are and the stories aren't nearly as impactful on the world as the 3D era's, so I don't think it's unreasonable to think it'll just be the one universe from now on.

Personally, I don't see it happening for the next few Years.

Maybe, they might start that Universe for the Eighth Game.

Personally, I wish they never pull this 'Universe' thing ever again. Just stick with the HD Era and expand it to the fullest.

The idea of a new universe right now is utterly bland. The HD era is still very young, and they ain't gonna commit the same mistake again. A lot of people complained with the end of the 3D era.

I don't want HD universe to end..... ever.

I'd love to see Vice City, SF, and LV in the HD universe and see more of North Yankton.

The HD universe upped the realism over 3D era (at least IV and TLAD) so i don't see what else they can offer beyond the HD's era characterisation and storytelling.

If we get something more realistic gameplay and storywise than IV, then i'm sorry but i'm done with the series simple, i don't want the silly humor, flawled logic and gameplay nuances gone just for the sake of being "fresh", abuse the HD era and don't screw up with VI anymore than you did with V.

Pretty sad how no one talked about there being an end to the 2D universe with the release of GTA 3, yet a significant makeup of the GTA fanbase is of people butthurt about how there's no longer gonna be any 3D games.

On-Topic: I think once an HD Vice City is done, maybe then Rockstar will start something new. By that point, the Housers might retire, and who knows what will happen to Grand Theft Auto when that happens.

4k capable consoles wont be available until 2020 at the earliest, the PS4 upgrade is just for viewing 4k content.

TBH I don't even mind. Whatever.

If you wanna up the silly factor, sure. But if we're doing another actually serious (read: good) game? Keep it here, I guess.

I just see a new 'universe' as a reboot of the franchise. A switch from HD to UHD would be relatively minor, as compared to the switch from 2D to 3D; or 3D to HD. I don't see the point of remaking Liberty City again, just because they have the ability to make game which runs on 4K resolution. Also, the HD games take place in the modern times, so they don't have to create a new universe to make new storylines.

The right thing to do is to keep expanding the HD universe.

This is one of those questions that will decide how the future of the series will go.

If Rockstar decides to make a "Silly UHD" universe, it'll go just like COD:IW. total flop, and it's not even released. Dug their own grave.

If the go with a serious game in the HD universe, it'll be like BF:1; successful, and not even released.

Just by looking at the current games and trailers, it's safe to say they'll hold on to the HD universe and keep it somewhat serious.

The PS4.5 won't be able to handle 4k gaming, the PS4 can't even run some games at a native 1080p resolution. The xbone doesn't even have a 4k console announced yet. The only 4k we'll be seeing is videos. Maybe we'll see true 4k gaming on consoles 10 years or so down the road, but until then, PC will be top dog because it can be upgraded with the newest tech (not a PC fanboy, this is just the truth).

So the Next confirmed Xbox - The Xbox One S will feature 4k Graphics. I see this as a trend and soon (4-6) years a standard. It will be interesting to see a gta game, or any game for that matter (atleast for me) with 4k graphics. Which setting do you think would be show the potential of 4k graphics? In my Opinion, a Northern Based (New York, Chicago) city would be best, as it can showcase the varying weather those locations get (Wind, Snow, Rain- if implemented). A season-esque type system would be pretty cool.

The Xbox one S is just the slim version, Project Scorpio is the 4k version coming out in holiday 2017. Will be interesting to see what does happen with GTA.

Yeah I agree with this totally. Liberty City and Los Santos are a fantastic scale, there isn't really any need to change it in the future like they did the first time around.

They should stick with the HD universe. The 3D games were too cartoony and the worlds weren't believable enough but the HD worlds are, so no need to start over.

If in future they wanted to go back to LC or LS, they should simply up-res the current designs and alter them slightly to show time has passed (like former construction sites now being completed structures, and old abandoned buildings replaced by newer ones etc). They could also easily expand the cities themselves with more roads or other islands without changing the fundamentals.

As The GTA series has only appeared on Next gen consoles once, with the same map that was developed for the last gen, would you expect to see even larger maps? We've only had next gen consoles for so long, and we've yet to see the most technically and graphically improved games put out on them.

It will, although Sony is giving the game developers a choice of whether their games will have a version for 4k gaming, but it has been said that PS Neo will support 4k gaming.

Source:

If anyone is thinking about upgrading to current gen, I suggest waiting for the Neo.

Certainly not going to happen. The HD Universe is the de-facto standard for Rockstar's GTA games now. If they were to create a new universe, everything accomplished in the HD Universe would be undone.

This also means Liberty City, Alderney, Los Santos, and North Yankton would need to be remade, which would be far too much work, given the amount of time dedicated to creating them.

Don't forget GTA Online would also need to be "rebooted", which makes the least bit of sense considering Online is being built from the ground up.

No, It will run games at 4k and that will be the main advantage of having a PSNeo over a regular PS4. The games will otherwise afford parity between consoles (if their claim of making sure they perform the same on original as they do on neo is respected/upholded, but it could change later, this part is speculative in the industry right now), just higher settings. Just as PC currently can play the console versions by setting everything to medium, the Neo will be like setting it on High and Ultra. PC will still be better than both, with GPU's already better than what will be in Neo and Scorpio. You'll basically see "low" on old PC's and whatever nintendo's irrelevant selves are doing, "medium" on PS4/low-medium on XBone(as it already is that way), high on Neo/Scorpio with 4k output, and Ultra on PC, where some games will still look exactly the same on newest-gen and PC, with no higher settings, while others will push PC to it's potential, and others will just use the headroom to lack optimization, business as usual. That is how it will be, it is not speculation.

The new PS4 will not run any games at native 4k. Best it can maybe hope for is upscaling to 4k or some sh*t. There's no way that thing is gonna run with better graphics and output at 4k while keeping any sort of decent framerate. That is nonsense.

Well, you can doubt it all you want from a position of assumption, but from a position of knowing already, I can tell you Neo is specifically for 4k support in games, not just video, so, doubt if you must, but you'll see in due enough time.

it will not only run new games at 4k, it will upscale old ones, and old ones will also be able to patch in native support. This I am telling you now, and time will show you =)

In fact, 1080p is the lowest resolution Neo will even support. Not "every" game will do 4k, just like not every game does 1k on PS4, and especially not on Xbone. But on Neo, 1k/1080p is the bare minimum allowed, and the device will not support lower resolutions.

And I'm telling you right now, the Neo PS4 will not be doing NATIVE 4k on pretty much any type of game. Maybe indie games and a few less demanding games could potentially do it. But there is no way any sort of demanding game is gonna run at a native 4k and still get 30/60 fps. It's not possible and whoever fed you those lies is crazy. If you think games like Uncharted 4, Battlefield 1 or a new Assassin's Creed game is gonna run at 4k/30-60 fps on the Neo, then you're insane.

And even if by some miracle, it was able to do 4k native on any of those games I mentioned, I doubt devs would go for it. They'd probably focus more on improving graphical design and/or framerate.

Does anyone else thinks that the 4K Universe will be next? With entirely new characters and entirely newly designed versions of Liberty City, Vice City and San Andreas (Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas)? I believe once the HD Universe is complete, Grand Theft Auto VII will feature Liberty, Vice and San Andreas and have three protagonists for each city along with three separate story strands for each protagonist/city combination.

And with 4K/Online capabilities you can have an online 'story' co-op where you and two other players play the central story as the three protagonists which would result in you forming a closer bond with online players as you go through the story together, not with custom characters but with actual characters. Concluding in one huge epic mission where ALL nine protagonists meet up in one huge mission against each other.

GTA 4K will allow cities to not only resemble the actual cities of New York, Miami, LA, San Francisco and Vegas as well but they will not just be islands anymore. A Grand Theft Auto with a full United States of America could be done and yes, you could go from one city to another but I think it would just be alot of plain, dead areas. Doing it with just two cities and one state will allow people to catch a plane to each city and back again and having everyone's story overlap where each player meets could be the future of the series.

There would also be special areas for each city, with Liberty City you could have Carcer Ciy make an appearance as a modern day take on Detroit, North Yankton could cameo in San Andreas' story, Vice would include "Gator Keys" and a fictitious version of Cuba and each city would have an overall central theme where the players make their money. Each protagonist will be split up into Business, Muscle and Driver.

Example of lay-out below.

Liberty City, Alderney, The Carraways, Carcer City

Liberty State

  • Protagonists (African-American Gang Member (Money Over Bitches), aging Gambetti Associate hitman, Irish-American Bouncer)
  • Theme: Heists

Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas
San Andreas

  • Protagonists (Chinese-American with ties to Triads, African-American with ties to the Families, War Veteran with ties to Los Aztecas)
  • Theme: Extortion

Vice City, Gator Keys, the Caribbeans

Flores

  • Protagonists: Dominican club owner who loses his club, American Iraq Sniper with PTSD, South American Drug Dealer
  • Theme: Drugs
