Rockstar and 2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive has filed a pair of new trademark applications for what appears to be a new game called "Judas." The trademark applications were filed with the United States Patent & Trademark Office on April 22, covering things like online games and more.

Last week, NeoGAF users discovered that Take-Two had also applied for Judas trademarks in Europe. The trademark applications do not include any further details on what Judas might be.

 

In a possibly related development, it has also been discovered that "www.judasthegame.com" is registered to brand protection agency MarkMonitor, which is also the registrar for Rockstar's official website.

 

A Take-Two representative declined to comment when approached by GameSpot today.

Judas is a bit of a weird name.... Not as in source, but what it refers to.

 

Possibly linking to a new Bully game, or development of one, but it could easily fit into GTA as well as an organisation or business.

 

Keep an open mind I guess.

It was probably a project originally started by The Benz and after he decided to sue R* they renamed it out of spite. That's what it sounds like to me anyway.

 

Anyway, I don't know what it could be but it's good to know that something new may be in development.

I'm pretty sure that's a codename for a future project, and not the actual name of the game. Remember when GTAV was codenamed "Rush"? However, that could be anything, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with Rockstar Games instead of 2K seeing as Judas' website is registered to brand protection agency MarkMonitor, which is also the registrar for Rockstar Games' official website.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they don't need to file a trademark registration for codenames do they? I thought they only appeared on things like casting calls and documents as to not reveal the true identity of the game (such as Project Rush for GTA V). If they've registered a domain for it too, then it's not likely to be just a codename.

Guessing this is going to be an open world action game set during the Maccabean revolt. You play as a Hellenized Jew from the backstreets of the Old City playing the Seleucids off against the Maccabeans. Will you choose the monetary rewards offered by the Seleucids or remain loyal to your people? Multiple endings are confirmed at this point, one with a Maccabean victory as in our timeline, one with Assyrian domination of the Holy Land. Featuring Scott Hill as Yehudah/Judas Maccabee and Gal Gadot as Hannah.

But given 2K is releasing Mafia and has released XCOM, I guess this could be a Rockstar game, unless some other 2K studio is doing something.

Nice observation, Kirsty. I really don't know how those things work to be honest, but considering how much Rockstar Games secretive is, this could also be a stunt to not make things clear enough, but this is just a wild and most likely wrong assumption on my part.

 

However, if Judas isn't the actual name, but just a codename, I think it may be related to the next Red Dead game. Red Dead Revolver was strongly about betrayal, which lead to Red Harlow's revenge. In Red Dead Redemption we also witnessed a very important betrayal. Plus, both "Redemption" and "Judas" are words related to religion. Also, Red Dead Redemption discussed religion on multiple occasions. Maybe I'm just looking too much into it, and I'm probably very wrong.

I just checked that out, and yes, you're right. Not only Rockstar Games, but also 2K and Take-Two Interactive use MarkMonitor as the domain for their websites. However yes, it's clearly a Rockstar Games' project.

Well... It's not "clearly" a R* project, 2K has a load of studios too, and they have XCOM, Borderlands, Mafia... It could just be a new IP, but we'll see. Rockstar has pending projects, maybe they should've tried to develop those first.

 

BTW, yeah, it can't be a codename as they've registered a domain for it. We didn't have shetlandponythegame.com or projectrushthegame.com

After some searching in the trademark database, I found that Andrea L. Calvaruso registered it. She also registered the XCom trademark along with the Bioshock trademark and others. Kristen McCallion registered all the Rockstar trademarks. GTA V. Red Dead (Redemption). Midnight Club.
