I loved all previous GTA games and used to tell friends of mine that if they ever made a persistent world MMO-style game where players could be criminals and cops, and face off in that world, it was game over for my social life - I'd just live on that game.

Well GTA Online isn't quite that, but it's close. Which has allowed me to keep a small amount of social life in between gameplay sessions. In some ways it's less than the experience I wanted, but in other ways it's more, too. Despite its problems I'm not really surprised I've sunk such an ungodly amount of hours into playing it. And I'm very curious to see what's next for this game - especially if and when GTA VI comes along - and also what it means for the Red Dead series. Really, though I have loved GTA Online more than not and though I continue to play it, I think a Red Dead Online could actually be a better experience, if they just get a few aspects of it right and learn from some of the key mistakes made with this game. If nothing else, not having stupid-powerful military hardware will make it so much more enjoyable.

Jesus you are one sad person.

Running around in open world games with friends is one of my favorite videogame activities, so once I realized how much there is to do in GTAO and the potential for creating your own fun, I was hooked.

I was exaggerating for humorous effect, genius. Most weeks the only time I get on my XBox is Saturday/Sunday mornings for a few hours, and on my lunch breaks during the work week. The rest of the time, I'm kind of busy with owning a house, working 45 hours a week, being married and having friends. I play a lot, I think, but I know many, many people who are on their console far more than I am.

Well the first time I played GTA:O I never thought I'd get hooked on it, my brother let me play with his PS4 and he told me to try GTA:O because that was what he was playing at the time so I created a character in his secondary character slot. He had around 1 mill in the bank and I couldn't spend any of it :(. Around 2 months later he bought a new pc and he transferred his character onto it and I quickly sold all of his character's cars, deleted his character and that's basically how it all started and why my ign is so ugly. Sadly the money didn't last long.

I used to play GTA4 online every now and again.

I got GTA5 and completed story mode, I then just went and did other things in story mode, I then thought I would give online a try, I started playing online and got to like a rank 25, I then stopped playing for about 2 months but then started again.

I had a lot of fun with the multiplayer in GTA IV and RDR so it was a given I was going to play this.

Because I love GTA and had to be involved. I'm happy i pre-ordered it and had time to finish the story mode and get used to the game by the time online came out.

I really didn't expect online to be so good though, I assumed it would be like GTA IV where online was decent but story mode was still my main focus.

GTA V online greatly exceeded my expectations and in my opinion is by far the most entertaining and immersive gaming experience.

I tried it. It was epic. I stayed.

It improves from IV online in almost every way.

I had not really got into online gaming, I used to play UT with my flatmates and sometimes online. I've always loved GTA and the moment I saw the preview of GTAO at the end of the trailer I knew I had to have it.

Why did I come here, mostly for the weather...

The chance to have my character in the GTA Universe and make my story was a big draw... yes there are things R* could do better, and I hope that as time goes on they will learn and improve.

Ever since I joined my current crew I've been having a blast, we get together every week with a varied playlist, and don't have to worry about money, and Yes I've spent some on shark cards, but I'm not a whiny I must have everything now type.

After a while, beating computer programmed NPC really isn't much of a challenge. Yeah, you have to try to complete SP missions sometimes a few times, but with basic video game skills, it's really pretty easy. Going up against other humans that have your skill set or better (still get my arse handed to me), is the real challenge. That, and I can play with friends online. By myself "ma meatloaf" style is just dull, and why I think SP mode is the dinosaur of gaming.

Good thread. Thanks for the discussion.

I couldn't agree more with the 2 posts above mine.

SP offers no challenges IMO.

No Use For A Name

I got to 98.8% on the 100% single player challenge before getting bored. I'd only played one online game before GTA, and that was one of the dumbass COD games years ago. I'd heard enough of my friends play to realize most online games were a cesspool of stupid 10 year olds.

I signed up for Social Club on Xmas day 2014. I played maybe an hour or so until heists came out. Hell, I had to level up to even qualify for them.

Agreed, I would like to see SP games where AI is a lot more like players, and less predictable. Given a few years we may have something like that.

First thing I did with the game is fly the blimp. Second thing I did was join online. Played that for months before I played story.

Because I played GTA 4 multiplayer where everyone didn't try to kill you for honking at them and expected the same with 5.

Disappointed but meh. Game's still fun. But GTA 4 friendly fire off lobbies still reign supreme.

I was finished with the SP story and wanted more GTA. So I waited for GTA Online to start. I was "fortunate" enough to log in that launch day. It was a complete cluster F*ck. Even passive mode wouldn't work correctly and you had to PAY for it. It kinda soured me on it for a week or so, but they got "better". Even gave us money for the problems.

I joined GTA online because I played the living death out of GTA IV online. I had Southern Switch down to 2m:56s, but still kept on cutting extra seconds off the course. That's all I played online, races and deathmatches. I tried RDR online, couldn't get into it after single player, and kept on going back to GTA IV online night after night. For me it was just a natural progression.

And boy, was I not disappointed.

I wanted to hit level 25 so I could earn that trophy and move on to another game, now I've gotten my characters to 947, 527 and 196 and don't plan on stopping until the game gets shut down.

I wanted a persistent ultimate open world experience, i expected a high quality product of Rockstar Games, similar to their previous titles, I expected a working Matchmaking...I expected Dedicated Server connections.

I was disappointed, but still hoped for the best...

until now, i came to realize that GTA Online, is not a functioning game, it lacks a proper Network setup it lacks the proper Matchmaking.

If and that is a big IF it would actualy be functional, I would love the game....I would LOVE playing in full lobbies of Captures, LTS and Adversary Modes, and I am sure people would like it as well...

But R* ruined it, and I hope they don't ruin it for their next title.

Because it is 3 years or more until GTA VI, 3 years without gaming for me, I am not sure if by that time I will even stay interested in gaming anymore...

So at this point, similar to how GTA introduced me to gaming with the age of 6, GTA is now killing off gaming for me, no game reaches up to the ambition and scope and setting of a Grand Theft Auto, but that is not an achievement, the achievement would have been to keep releasing quality products, to have a proper Network setup in Online to make the game long-term accesable....but R* failed...

They failed their customers, the failed their fans...

I can't even realy blame them, they aren't "greedy", they are simply incompetent...unfortunately.

Seriously, of all the valid things you say on this forum, I cannot understand what the hell you're talking about.

Are you saying you do not play GTA 5 at all because it's a pile of sh*t, and are hoping upon blind hope that GTA 6 will resolve all of these so-called issues?

Just play the bloody game - it's brilliant. It's got its flaws, granted, but I seriously thought you were a Rockstar fanboy like me, not a detractor of this magnitude.

EDIT: and if you're on XB1, get some friends (add me), get a mic, grind some cash, bash a few brains in. Nothing complicated.

I came to V late and really wanted to wait until I upgraded (next/current gen console) to try out the story mode. I still wanted to play GTA though so Online was a happy medium.

I wasn't a big fan of PvP and how there was such an emphasis on killing each other vs cooperation. I've always felt GTA was intended to be a PvE game more than anything, but story mode seemed so limited compared to the amount of features Rockstar has blessed online with. So I stayed and adapted.

I did end up playing SP and Ive enjoyed it for its own reasons.

Because I've played everything Rockstar/GTA related religiously since fall 2001. Also, specifically was excited by the expanded complexity of the online portion. Waited for CG to release due to my ps3 breaking prior to V's initial release, so glad i did! Saved money by not replacing an outdated console and avoided the rocky start online got off to.
