SouthLand
The Eurovision 2016 song contest has released the official guidelines for the use of flags in the Eurovision audience. But as well as the usual size restrictions, there is now a list of specifically prohibited flags. This are the flags that are banned: I thing they forgot a few, there for I am going to send them an email and ask them to add this flags in the banned group: Source: Please click on this .pdf to read the three page document that has extra information. http://cdn3.axs.com/axs/pdfs/FlagPolicyRG.pdf Edited April 29, 2016 by SouthLand
Smith John
Surprised the EU flag & anthem hasn't been used to determine the contest in all honesty. Give it time. bash the fash m8s

Uncle Sikee Atric
When it generates a single worthy of being called, 'a single', then I will notice this diatribe of political bargaining..... As it is, the average X Factor reject can win it, so I choose not to bother with it.

Fonz
sh*tty pop tunes with atrocious arrangements coupled with pretentious theater played out against nationalistic backdrops. Smith John
sh*tty pop tunes with atrocious arrangements coupled with pretentious theaterCompletely with you there. But then... played out against nationalistic backdrops. About as appealing as dysentery. What alternative does your utopia offer? Pick a song from 'category A', or vote for 'category H'? "Hey, I'm looking forward to the World Cup, my bet is on 'category F'. Do you think 'category M' will qualify?" "Hey, who fancies some dining out tonight?"... "I do, I know this nice little 'category L' place downtown"... "nah, I'd prefer some category G' food" Seriously, what is wrong with national identity and culture? Do you really want to live in such a bland existence? GTA_stu, Skeever, Abel. and 1 other 4 bash the fash m8s
Fonz
That doesn't make any sense. Names of regions, town, continents etc. are useful. I'm not sure where the idea of abandoning names or cultures comes from or what it's supposed to mean. Sounds pretty creepy. As far as nationalism goes, it's just dumb. What's the appeal of cheering for a piece of cloth and singing songs about things people did in the same hunk of land where you happened to be born? Eurovision is basically the "artistic" version of that Serbia Strong video. ten-a-penny, mr quick, make total destroy and 2 others

Sounds pretty creepy.Er, I thought that was what communism represented. Care to clarify your own interpretation? As far as nationalism goes, it's just dumb. What's the appeal of cheering for a piece of cloth and singing songs about things people did in the same hunk of land where you happened to be born? You're right, there isn't much point. But it provides people happiness in the form of associating with something they feel attached to. What's wrong with that? How does that directly affect you? Fonz
Er, I thought that was what communism represented. Care to clarify your own interpretation? Getting rid of states, yes. But cultures are real practices/customs and exist independently of states. For example, there was already a specific culture in Germany before the state was created, Kurds have a specific culture without a state and so on. You're right, there isn't much point. But it provides people happiness in the form of associating with something they feel attached to. What's wrong with that? How does that directly affect you? Nothing wrong with "brotherhood and unity", but I think nationalism is the wrong way to go about it. Not that everyone who is patriotic is suddenly an Aryan or Greater Serbian supremacist or anything close, but the principle is pretty divisive and generally diverts people from international solidarity on important issues. Plus the recent history of nationalism is genuinely scary. Edited April 29, 2016 by Black_MiD mr quick and Clem Fandango
Raavi
A bit of national pride and sense of unity is perfectly fine-- I myself cheer on the national team when we have a World cup or European Championship (not this time because the sods didn't qualify), I'm proud of our continual top 5-10 rankings in numerous positive global indexes, I feel a sense of identity whenever a fellow Dutchie does something noteworthy good in the world, and a stronger sense of disgust whenever a fellow Dutchman does something noteworthy bad, I'm genuinely glad and feel privileged to have been born where I was born-- however it stops being just fine when you take things over-board and deem yourself better than anyone else purely because you won the country-of-birth-lottery, or of course when you go the nationalist hooligan route. But that's an extreme. In short, since this is Gen Chat and not D&D after all, a bit of national pride is fine, a national superiority complex isn't. Rhoda
I'm going to be honest, I only watched the UK Eurovision coverage when Terry Wogan hosted it. His cutting, often scathing remarks about other country's costumes and songs made me proud to be British. I'm surprised the very essence of Eurovision hasn't already been torn apart. MyName'sJeff
It's funny how the ISIS flag ends up on the list, as if it belongs to a country or something. Utterly laughable. While Palestine is on it for no good reason? I give no f*cks about this, but when something looks fishy, it is fishy. Smith John
but the principle is pretty divisive and generally diverts people from international solidarity on important issues.Says who? I have family in Sweden, and whenever we visit each other, this pissing contest usually comes up as a form of conversation where I take the piss out of them for their Scandinavian back-slapping, and then they return the favour by feeding me on how much the Irish are always in the UK's corner. F*ck knows if any of this is true, but who cares - it's called banter. I see no division. None. Other than, you guessed it, BANTER's sake. But we're strictly speaking of the arts in regards to this thread. Having national affiliation within the entertainment industry - especially when it comes to something so trivial as the bloody Eurovision Noise Contest - is hardly going to impact anything substantial. It - along with every other form of entertainment - is there to allow people to briefly forget about all of the sh*te that's going on. Respite, if you will. Fonz
Ah, fair enough. I was thinking more in terms of international movements and stuff like that, but I see your point about banter. Hell, we joke around with our Brazilian friends all the time, especially that infamous match with Germany (the whole 7-1 thing has even become a common phrase in Brazil, I think). Definitely nothing wrong with that. Smith John
