My latest approach to the initial assault is to get up on the elevated train tracks right over the entrance road. From here, you can pretty much snipe the majority of the enemies, without them even shooting back. The only problem is you have to listen for the train, which does spawn often during this mission, and get out of way.

Jump the wall and go up the side of the big oil tank, you can shoot down on almost all of them and take your time without getting killed. I've also had good fun with the Armored Karuma running back and forth thru there and making them FLY!
