Stock market was a thing before anyone even thought about internet. Hell, it's even older than many US cities.

In a game set in the past they can have actual stock brokers who you call and tell them what stocks you want to buy. It'd be hilarious when you want to sell your stocks you go over to see them and find out they're high on drugs and took all your money lmao.

No, he means having the stock market accessible any time through the in game internet. Having to drive home or to payphone just to invest in something could be tedious compared to investing through the internet. Also the only way you could keep track of stocks before the internet was by news paper or TV.

How people react when someone else says GTA VI should take place in another time period then the one they want:

It's funny, this thread's old enough that the 2010's could be a separate poll option lol

that said, modern times for me - I have a weird affinity for contemporary settings in media, exploring the lives we presently exist but with the lowered limitations of whatever they manage to cook up.

Speaking of polls, could we have an additional poll asking when people think it will be set (as well as the current one of when they want it to be)?

Done, you'll have to delete your earlier vote if you've made one to resubmit :santa:

What era should the next game be set in - 80s

What era Rockstar will chose for the game - modern times

I feel this way too, after all so far the HD Universe have shown each cities reimagined in a modern times, depicting life today. And also because they would be able to throw in more content, and have more freedom to make a story about whatever they want.

Worst case scenario would be story mode in the 80s and online in present day.

I'll admit it, after I finished the story I probably won't be playing singleplayer anymore. But having to get back to online in 202X ... that would feel like you get a vacation from your job that you hate but in the end you still have to go back to it.

I can't stand GTA Online anymore and another modern online would be just the same - and I wouldn't play it nearly as much as a past setting.

If you pick modern or future, I automatically assume you have no imagination and/or taste. GTA satire always works better if it's retrospective and you can also play way better with cliches, stereotypes, iconic imagery, sound and general style etc. of an era that has already passed.

Personally, I'd like early 2000s, we've never really had that. I mean technically GTA3 was 2001, but it didn't feel like it. I mean you used a pager lmao. You could have a basic phone for calls and texts, maybe some very early web applications to do stupid things like the bling wallpapers and ringtones from 4 and you could have skater + punkrock culture (I know punk was a thing way before the 2000s, but I feel like it had a bit of a renaissance in the late 90s/early 2000s, especially in popular media.)

My second, and more likely, pick is the 80s.

So if I want more variety of cars/weapons and prefer modern stuff in general I have no imagination and taste? I respect your opinion if you prefer a past setting but dang, some of you guys think you're superior for wanting to go back to the ''good ol' days''.

I know San Andreas was set in 1992, but what I mean is the years of the 90s that Rockstar hasn't done, The mid to late 90s. I think either 1995, 1997 or 1999 would be the best choice for a 90s setting. What do guys think?

We already have current time, so thats a no-no for me.

Personal preference: 60's/70's/80's. Love the cars from those years.

Would also be kinda funny to cross borders with a van full of weed (or made of weed).

The 40's and 50's is kinda Mafia or L.A. Noire if I remember correctly (Mafia 3 is in the 60's but imo that game was so bad it doesnt count).

There's literally more cars available IRL by even the 80s than they could ever hope to put in the game, same goes for weapons. And there's plenty of games that work in modern times, even GTA likes (meaning open world crime games), like Watch Dogs. It's just that GTA in its thematics cannot draw as much from modern issues, struggles and popular culture as much as it can from an era that's already bygone, where that times classic movies and songs have been decided, the fashion preserved in it's most prominent examples. You need to get a *feel* for a time period before you can properly capture it's essence and recreate in a virtual world. Ask yourself: would San Andreas' story work outside of the early 90's? No, because it draws on era specific elements: the crack epidemic, the LA riots... How about Vice City's story but it's 2018, is it still as poignant? No, obviously not. Again, era specific elements. The drug trade, the references to Scarface and Miami Vice. Would GTA Vs Story work outside of it's time? Would it work in 2023 as well as in 2003? Yeah, I think so. We're nearing on 8 years since GTA V released. Does the game make you feel like you were transported back to the early 2010s when you start it up? Because it doesn't for me. Could just as well be 2019, change the phone and it's 2007. I'm not saying we need to "return to the good old days because it was so much better than now", I'm saying GTA works *much* better if it's a retrospective view instead of a contemporary one.

70s are really underexplored in games and I don't understand why. It would be really great to see 70s in GTA, crazy times.

I find it funny how some people act like if the game doesn’t take place in a specific era, then the game will be bad or something. Like who cares? This is supposed to be a game where you can have fun and do things that you would normally never do in real life, not a f*cking cultural documentary. Don’t get me wrong, visiting a certain era and it’s ways of life is cool, but some people take this way too seriously like it’s the number one most important thing about the game. In past GTA games I never have been that pre-occupied about when the game took place, I just played and enjoyed the gameplay, the missions, the characters and the map...

Modern. I think there's a lot of sh*t for Rockstar to put their spin on. They'd be taking a risk in it becoming dated, but I'd still like (and am kind of afraid) to see how they'd deal with stuff like memes and internet culture in general. They've already kind of done that in GTA Online, like how the the clerk in the Casino Shop is an "influencer", so I doubt they're averse to tackling stuff like that. That being said, I have no doubt whatsoever that they can make an amazing GTA game based in the past; I'm just personally hoping for another modern setting.

80s are overrated af...

Unpopular opinion but I wouldn't mind the 90s or early 2000s in a dark and gritty city.
