I was bored sitting at home for the past few weeks,so I made a concept GTA game set in the 1979 San Fierro, Las Venturas and the surrounding countryside. Those of you interested in the 70s setting (and those that aren't,maybe it changes your mind),feel free to check it out and let me know what you think.

I'm also thinking about making a similar concept set in the 70s Liberty City,or maybe 80s Vice City and the rest of Florida.

When I think of 70s and 80s it simply blows my mind how much potential those 2 decades offer and at the same time they are close enough to each other where Rockstar wouldn't have to scrap almost everything to do those two (RDR 2 style) and every city (whichever Rockstar would do) would be unique and have its own atmosphere.

Miami in 1970s - before Mariel boatlift and so on

Miami in 1980s - cocaine boom, Miami drug wars

With all respect to R* and their amazing ability to make fantastic games, I can't imagine anything more bland than 3rd modern GTA in a row. Not to mention, that I live in modern times and I enjoy it but I don't need to emulate my life in game.

Agreed, both of those decades have a ton of potential to be featured in GTA games, from the classic cars and motorcycles, to weapons that would be available (which are still commonly used and far from obsolete), to the music, to fashion, to memorable events from those times and movies made and/or set in those times that R* can reference, to general atmosphere that you just can't emulate in a game with present setting.I mean, just check out some of these videos:

70s New York

1980s New York

70s Las Vegas

70s San Francisco

80s Miami

Seeing as we never had a GTA game set in 70s or 80s Liberty City, 70s Las Venturas or 70s San Fierro, and the last time we saw 80s Vice City was the 3D universe version in GTA VCS back in 2006,any of these settings would be amazing to see, much more interesting than another contemporary setting.

jeez why do you guys want Miami in the 80s sooooo bad.... Miami is even crazier and better today in modern times

stop watching TV and actually research the place... take a visit.... do something other than act like Miami's high point was the 80s

My friend... that wasnt GPS or "something similar"....

It was a visual aid that portrayed that you had a physical map in RDR and you were drawing lines on the map with your "pen" like ppl did in those times... hence why the "gps" lines looked drawn on.. smh

Well what's in Miami today? I am genuinely interested to hear what kind of setting it would be. I think I heard something about the Downtown being really bad but other than that I don't know much about today's Miami. I would be down for a today's setting either ways, I just want to see Vice City done in a new generation, don't particularly care if it is in the 80s or in the modern age.

I guess you can roleplay it however you want but, I mean, come on. It's a GPS on mute.

Err, mateybubble, I think you’re missing the point I was making. My point was that some argue that we need to stay modern as only modern can accommodate certain features. RDR/2 shows that isn’t always the case as features like GPS can be adapted to fit a different era - as you say with a pencil on a map. This could also be done for features. How Rockstar would do it I don’t know, but I’ll leave it to them. So you’re a actually backing up my point. You can unshake your head.

This would be a perfect concept.

Making a game like this would be a great way to experience that time period and relive that way of life.

Players could take on missions through payphone or home phones.

They could watch tv on a crt.

The radio stations would have songs from that era, so there could be cheesy techno pop and nu-metal.

It would be set in Liberty City.

Great point. There are alternatives for everything in the 80s. It's literally all mentioned at the first page of the thread so I guess I don't need to mention them all here.

That being said, even the Miami in 2000s would be great, it's underused and original. Something in-between 80s and 2020s!

go back in time. GTAO is not grounded in reality. Rockstar already put flying bikes and laser guns in the game so even if GTA 6 will be set in the 80s they will probably just keep releasing all the crazy technology and modern cars, guns, music, etc because why wouldn't they?

Exactly. Just because it's set in the 80s doesn't mean Rockstar can't put crazy flying bikes in the online. Like I've already said, online is meant to be fully Arcadey and putting flying bikes in the 80s isn't immersion breaking(for online). If you look at it that way, isn't GTA O having flying bikes immersion breaking/illogical since it's set in present time but there's no flying bikes in the real life yet?

Flying bikes fit in the 80s more actually. Most of the Sci fi stuff in online came from 80s movies.

That's why it's almost a better choice to have flying bikes and maybe hoverboards(sounds really cool!) in 80s online. It would be inherently good.

Speaking of hoverboards I wonder if GTA VI will have skateboards...

Not much has changed since 2013 at all. The 2013 car is nice and the 2020 is well just shiny. The same with a modern day game. It'll be more of the same themes just shinier or more extreme.

I don't know if you meant to quote me but I agree.

Whats new? Trump? The rise of Instagram? A modern GTA would just feel stale in my opinion. If they don't do 80s I honestly feel a 2000s setting could work and would be very nostalgic in the same way that SA and VC was.

GTA Online will dictate that the game will probably be set in the modern times, gives them a lot more options to milk money out of players.

Personally though I'd love to see Vice City again in the 80's with the modern engine. Neon signs, cocaine cowboys, white supercars, chainsaws in the bath etc.

So basically you want a GTA Vice City remake? I'd rather see something completely new and unexpected like modern day Chicago/Detroit focused on gangbanging and weapons/drug dealing.

Contrary to the common sentiment in this thread, I actually like the silly stuff in GTA Online because it boils down to what GTA has always been. A sandbox shooter based in a satirical world with some fun and silly elements sprinkled all over. It's a video game after all. This nonsense about how GTA has to be grounded in reality is nothing more than a belief shared by those who started playing GTA with IV and want it to be some sort of reality-based crime simulator. GTA has always been a bit wacky. San Andreas was beloved for it's wackiness. Who's to say that GTA must abide by the rules of reality? As long as it maintains the suspension of disbelief and is an absolutely cracking game that's all it ever needs to be. The problem is when the suspension of disbelief is not only shattered but absolutely brutalised (ala Saints Row 3, 4 and Hell).

On a side note, Saints Row 2 did this very well. It was a sandbox shooter that while being silly and fantastical in many ways, was also an absolutely brilliant game with a solid story and narrative that didn't overdo the silliness like it's successors.

I'm of the mind that GTA should stick to modern day, but I'm perfectly fine with it going back to the 80s. If it went back to the 80s there might actually be a bit more room for them to do some more fantastical stuff like DeLoreans and Hoverbikes, with it possibly being inspired by 80s Sci-Fi flicks.

There's no reason it would need to be a remake. Is GTAIV a remake of GTA III? No. Different story, mostly different characters. Different city, even. Just the same theoretical location.

It could be anything they want to make, it would just share a setting.

You can tell me whatever you want, but you can't convince me that VI in modern times wouldn't be just the same as GTAO in modern times. (Except the flying stuff etc.)

Which is why I believe that it will be set in the past. We already have a modern time GTA set in 2020: GTA V Online.

There are many ways to make a game look and feel different than the previous one without setting it in the past. I imagine the story, characters, tone, themes, and geographical setting will all be different. I don't get how anyone could think that GTA VI, with a story and fully fleshed out missions and characters, would be anything like GTA:O. I mean, GTA V isn't even "just the same as GTAO".

To be honest im not expecting as good game as rdr2 no matter what era it is setting. Story is prob not going to be as good, touching and made with heart as rdr2.

Rdr2 just set the bar very high what comes to story. I wish its more of serious and not downgrade back to gta v and also I wish its set in late 80s or 90s because modern characters might be too "zoomer".

Modern can be okay with good well done characters but I just wish the characters don't look like eboys, sad boys, trappers etc crap like this:

Spoiler

Yes it does. Gunrunning takes place in 2017 and the updates after it take place in the year the DLC was released.
