Going back in time is always more atmospheric, no matter what.

This. I’d say the soundtrack suffers in the modern era too. IV was “ok” but not on par with VC or SA and V was just all over the place. A good soundtrack creates a good atmosphere and vice versa.

V was a mixed bag.

Some stations were horrible, some amazing (like Radio Mirror Park and Los Santos Rock Radio and Soulwax FM)

IV (which I adore as a game) has perhaps the worse soundtrack of them all, except for The Journey (my favourite station on the HD unverse); fortunately The Ballad Of Gay Tony made it better.

I still think Vice City stories has the best radio stations ever, and the dynamics of the DJ couples are so funny, especially Flash FM, with the constant bickering between Tony and Tery

Late 90s Vice City would be pretty interesting

Here's one of the reasons (besides all radio stations playing classics, classic cars and motorcycle, and none of the crap I'm surrounded with IRL) why I'd like to see the 70s setting:

Wether we're talking about the mob, outlaw bikers or street gangs,IMO it would be much more interesting than another GTA game where you have a smartphone in your hand more than a gun.I'd like 80s, 90s or even early 2000s too,just as long as it feels different enough from GTA 5 and Online.

@GTA-Biker great post 👍.

I agree. Something like 1989, 1996 or even the year 2000 - anything that gives us a sense of the past. I honestly feel its what's been missing fro the HD era.

This!

Honestly, the whole "Project Americas" leak shaped my imagination and hopes for the next game.

I'm at a point where I get genuinely angry at people wanting another modern setting. To me, GTAO ruined that. And that's my own fault I guess. To me that game has felt beaten to death since around 2016. Just thinking about it bores me to death. And having another game in that time feels like just the same old thing, different map.

You might say: "BUT IT'S A NEW GAME EVERYTHING WILL BE DIFFERENT!" ... no, it won't be. GTAO evolved over time, in GTAO we are also in the year 2019/20. The map is different, but everything else will be the same. Not only the same thing as the last game, but also the same as the things I see when I look out of my window.

I want different cars. Different weapons. Different songs.

I don't think I'd get excited because of "Oh my, it's a new version of the Benefactor Schafter!". Nice, my neighbour has the real life equivalent to that. I can look at that every day. Mobile phones? Oh yeah, getting even more annoying texts and phone calls in a game than in real life, that's the dream!

I just want stuff I haven't experienced, cars I don't see every day and the feeling of escaping every day life. A modern GTA won't do that for me. I don't care if it's 1989, 1996 or 2000. Just please, for the love of god, not 2020.

You can have old stuff in a modern GTA  like old cars and music , but you cant have modern stuff in a 80s GTA.

Maybe I'm at a certain age now, but I don't see the benefits of a modern era GTA. Correct me if I'm wrong, but much of what we have now in terms of fashion, weapons and vehicles was broadly similar in the 80s. I may be wrong, but I'm sure laser sights for guns existed in 80s for example. So even if they weren't featured in a modern V, they could still be featured in a past VI.

GPS didn't exist in say, the 80s, but then it didn't in the 1890s, but it doesn't stop RDR2 having something similar.

I feel modern music has gone stale (I am prepared to get flamed for that), and modern music can't capture an era in the way that past music can, as we don't know what will symbolise the 2020s yet. I mean, compare the difference between 2010 and 2020. Not much, to me. 1980 to 1990? 1990 to 2000? Huge.

Social media has dominated the world since 2010 (just after IV funnily enough) and not for the better in my opinion. I'd like to go back to a time before all of that.

We've had modern GTAs for 12+ years now. Time for a change, for me.

Cheers mate! If only Rockstar did 🤣. Some posters on here will be delighted they don't!

I honestly think it'll be multi era, or at least dual. That should please all. Of course, if it had to be one, then it's the past.

If it works like that then why RDR 2 is set between 1899 - 1907 and not in 2018?

It's not at all about all the 'stuff'. It's all about atmosphere, mood, texture of that particular time.

Multi era scares me a bit. I'll be honest, I'll spend most of my time after I finish the story in online, so that's like my personal main focus and I wouldn't want to miss the past setting there either.

Getting teased with the 80s in singleplayer and then having to go back to the same GTAO I abandoned years ago, just with a different map would be the biggest bummer I could imagine.

It's just not the same.I can drive some 70s muscle car and listen to a classic rock station, but if I pass by a Cavalcade and two Dilettantes,it just doesn't feel like a period piece and it kills the immersion.

And besides, why would you want to have the same modern stuff three times in a row.Wouldn't it feel repetitive to drive the exact same Comet or ride the same Bati 801 that we already had in GTA 4 and 5,and have the same "those kids and their internet" jokes?IMO it would be refreshing if comet was based on a classic Porsche 911,if Bati was based on a classic Ducati 900SS,or if the humor is based on 70s, 80s or 90s stereotypes for a change.

those kids and their internet jokes? I was actually very surprised that the internet is barely a theme for humor in GTA V let alone IV. They satirize it within their own fictional internet of course(pretty effectively I might add, I always have a good laugh there), but it rarely goes beyond that, so I don't get it. What V was excessively full of is Hollywood pop culture stereotypes and jokes, but it won't be the case next time for obvious reasons.

In GTA 4 Roman teases Niko in one mission jokingly assuming Niko doesn't know how to use the internet (that was at least justified for the time, seeing as some people didn't start using the internet until post-dial up late 2000s).Then GTA 5 turned it up to 11 with Michael acting like a stereotypical grumpy geezer and constantly whining about Jimmy playing some COD parody and spending time on social media all the time, parodies of Zuckerberg, Facebook and Twitter, and similar stuff.I don't want GTA 6 to have a bunch of references and jokes about cringeworthy Tik Tok videos or whatever will be the newest internet fad by the time the game is made.

It's like people think there were cave men in the 80's and no modern technology at all. They can include modern stuff in GTA already they have flying bikes and sh*t that don't exist in GTA Online so I don't see how it's impossible especially since a lot of 80's movies inspired what's in online right now.

You can still have oppressors, and laser guns or whatever. Make them top secret military projects that criminals have gotten their hands on and are selling on the black market. The US government armed a bunch of groups back in the 70s/80s to stop communism during the cold war like the Contras in Nicaragua so a couple of weapons could have gone missing and ended up in the wrong hands. It's not that hard man.

Fashion is subjective but a lot of the fashion styles we have today were inspired by the 80's and were around back then in the 80's.

The Air Jordan 1 released in 1985.

I agree, it might rather anger all instead of please all or you can switch between the eras after you finished the game but I'd vote for one era only.

I don't believe in electric vehicles but a whole bunch of entirely new electric cars and even brands will be on the market within the next years, depending on when GTA will be released they could overdo the entire car stock featuring these new cars and brands (Tesla, Nio, Rimac, Polestar ...). Concerning cars, the 2020s will become one of the most interesting decades, on the other hand GTA is not only about cars and electric vehicles are rather a European and Chinese thing.

The poll is misleading.

Currently:

519 want modern

595 want past (70s-00s).

I would have liked to see a straight modern vs past poll. That would be interesting.

I find modern so vague. Does modern mean the year the game is released, or would another game in 2013 be classed as modern? Is 2010 classed as modern or is that past now?

I'd say modern is everything since internet and smartphones became mainstream. GTA IV captured this time period quite good. 9/11 also marked a new era I think, so a past GTA should be pre 2001.

When Steve Jobs revealed the Iphone back in 2007 that's how things really started getting modern. A least to me.

Let's say 2001 to 2007 was an intermediate period and the transition from the analog past to the digital present/future which captured GTA IV quite well, since GTA IV covered this time, a future GTA past should at least go one step back in time further, which is at least pre 9/11 in my opinion, I'd still like to see a GTA in 1999, mocking the millenia hype.

I'd like to see late 90s. Familiar setting like Vice City would be cool. Like it's been mentioned, the big build up to the year 2000. All the hype and paranoia.... wait.. that sounds more like 2020.... so I guess in a way... I'd vote for either 1998/1999... or 2020. :p

How was 2004 different from 2005 or 2006? If you want a clear historical cut it's 9/11, I don't know when things exactly turned into what is now, smartphones, social networks the like and when to make a clear cut between modern and past after 9/11.

2004 was the tipping point. Facebook started in 2004, in 2005 YouTube starts, dial up internet declines and broadband becomes more popular. HDTVs start becoming the next big thing. The Iraq War and Sadam Hussein. I'm forgetting some things. But there is and was a difference in the 2000s. I guess you really weren't paying attention during that time.

We're from different countries, that might explain different perceptions, it took some years until facebook became popular in Germany and in general I think it's more relevant when things became mainstream rather when they were invented, but again different countries, different perception. But I think we can agree on GTA past means no smart phones and no social media and no widespread use of the internet.

I’m hoping for a period piece. The best GTAs was period pieces. If they did a late 70s era New York, LA in 1969, London in the 60s or 80s....... I’d LOVE that. But I think the online part weighs a lot heavier than people think, and that likely dictates important decisions too. So if they make a period piece like one of those I mentioned, they could say that the game is in late 70s or whatever, and then have the online part in the modern era. I realise that it’d offer up some problems, but if they changed skins on buildings and peds, add modern radio and the like, it’s certainly doable. With the amount of money R* will make on GTA 6, they could do it easily. And when you think about how long it’s taken developing it, and mind you it’s not even announced yet, it should be possible.
