Regarding a 70s setting, I think that R* planned to cover that period in Agent. I recently watched a couple of thriller and spy movies made in the 70s, which is a genre or theme that is very rare, if not completely lacking, in today's cinema. Just a thought, but it absolutely don't negate a 70s setting for a Grand Theft Auto game. A modern-time setting is too relatable and unimaginative for it to be interesting to visit.

Looking at the poll, 70s-2000s, aka, modern-ish period settings, actually has a slightly higher polling than modern. Interesting.

How about very big campaign going trough decades, from 1975 to 2025?

How about if the storyline featured 2 characters, one of which lived in the 80s and the other in modern day. Perhaps the stories would switch from one to another throughout the story, and the 80s storyline would affect the modern day one. Kinda similar to what Black Ops 2 did with it's story.

That sounds absolutely crazy!  But wouldn't then modern telling constantly be changing every time you jumped outta the historic era?  Could become quite confusing if a lot depends on the past elements etc.  I can't think how it would work, since you wouldn't be aware of some of the changes most likely.  It's an interesting concept though!

i want it set in modern times. thats just my personal preference. i like having modern weapons and vehicles. and all the other stuff from the current year. the way i figure it if rockstar wanted to make a game set in the past they should make it a new game series. just like red dead. the red dead series is a lot like gta. but it has a different name and set way in the past. i also dont want it set in the future. although it would be cool to see rockstar make a futuristic theme game series. but not for gta. i like it in the modern day.

I like the period game.  They were pretty good, VC being particularly awesome.  That place just won't work in modern time's I don't think, personally anyways.  I wouldn't mind taking us back to the 50's or 60's.  But then it's more Godfatheresque or indeed LA Noire but from the bad buys perspective.  They're literally done 1900's (RDR), 1950's (LA Noire), 1980's (VC), 1990's (SA), 2000's (III,IV) and 2010's (V).  Picking an era would be essentially having a do-over of some time they've previously visited.

I’d argue that period pieces were a big selling point and appeal for both VC and SA. It’s occurred to me that many on here who are over 25 remember these games quite vividly but there is a generation now that has never really played a GTA period piece. Perhaps SA, but not VC.

Again, I’d argue that a late 1990s/early 2000s setting will appeal hugely to the over 25s in terms of nostalgia but also keeps it fairly modern.

I think they should mainly stick to 2000s to 2020. It will be amazing to explore something as fresh as today rather than revisiting the 60s or the 80s for the 10th time. (Kinda reminds me of Boondocks.)

Rather than making it the same game, make it a dlc similar to GTA 4. That way you won't feel pressure to continue in one generation and lose progress to go to the next.

Goddammit why does modern have so many votes? Nothing interesting has happened irl since GTA V and therefore doing anything in the modern time seems more or less the same and pointless.

Add the votes up for all the period pieces. Modern day is actually behind.

I'd like it for a GTA to be set in the future. It would be something different from any other GTA, give some freedom for R* to go a bit wild and I do trust them over Activision not to f*ck up the futuristic theme like Acti did with Modern Warfare.

Then again, I see some of the online photos and some of the crap they've come up with may be too much. Hopefully for a single player game R* will keep it manageable enough.

Also, I'll admit the radio would be a challenge to make in a future-themed GTA as well, and that's a huge part of GTA games.

I'd say late 90s prior to 9/11, I think 9/11 changed the mindset of the western world and ended a decade without sorrows, so a GTA in 1999 would be different from both SA and IV, the millenia hype was a big thing back then, Jennifer Lopez' waiting for tonight should be in the soundtrack, so I'd vote for a GTA 1999.

^ ^ This. They've touched upon most viable era's already, and although we've been given good experiences of other eras by other developers like the 1970's in Driver: Parallel Lines, and the 30's in Mafia, undoubtably Rockstar would do it better. The future, or an alien world colony could also be awesome: Check out San Andreas Anderius on youtube.

Personally I'd like Rockstar to return to 1960's London, if only for the different architecture and vibe or an early 1970's Dirty Harry style.

Hmmm nice bike

The 70s would be an interesting era for Rockstar to visit. Agent was supposed to be set in the 1970s, but they clearly never got the chance to fully flesh that idea out. A GTA in the 70s could work.

Otherwise, I'd honestly love to see the early-mid 2000s. It isn't too modern, since a lot has really changed since then and we're farther away in time from Vice City's release year than Vice City was from 1986. There's still familiar stuff like cellphones and internet, but it's going to be noticeably older compared to what we have today. Technology and culture have changed a lot since then. You'd also get somewhat modern-ish cars for the people who play GTA Online and just want to drive around in supercars that look like the Batmobile.

Basically, any time between 2000 and 2006 is pretty much a win-win for the people who want a nostalgic setting and people who want modernity.

most of the older versions of GTA are retro like gta vice city is like 80's era and GTA San Andreas is like 1990's era, so the new installment should be  of modern era.

Yup, I like this one if it's set in VC, though set in the late 80s/early 90s for the former era, considering drug lords like Escobar were facing increased scrutiny during this time, cartels that just went all out in their fight against the law and the ushering of the crack epidemic.

It would be akin to Driver: Parallel Lines, but with greater freedom to switch between the eras.

An idea for the transition could involve players visiting a specific landmark (like a gravestone) or a person to trigger the change in period.

New songs on the radio would be added over the course of the game, unique events will activate and stop permanently (like in RDR1, in Mexico for example) and construction of certain areas will finish as the game progresses.

I really want to see a modern-day Vice City but being a huge 80s enthusiast, I’d love to see another GTA game taking place in the 80s. The modern-day satire is starting to get really old and one-dimensional. The 3D Universe satire was pretty much perfect, and it was probably helped by most of the games taking place in the past.

I say keep it present day. I don't really see the benefit of doing a period piece. I feel like you'd lose more than you'd gain.

There's more criminal activities in the past than present day.

I said 50s though I think about more like, multiple cities with a different time line style for each, then one large city supporting all of them. Government and other official things could all conform to a general middle ground, with the general idea people are living in their times regardless of the progress. As if the buildings and parks, events and vibe being a advancement in progress, with newer cities not looking "newer" though being more a modern structuring.

Well, I'd like to have the Story mode in Vice City, starting in 1989 and ending in 1993 Just 1 playable character. No modern era in story mode. GTA Online 2, would be set in Vice City too, but in the current time, just like GTA Online nowadays, that way we can keep the fascinating cars from the late 80's and early 90's and still be able to purchase modern cars like supers and sports.

Like what? I can't really think of any crimes in the last 70 or so years that don't exist anymore. I'd say there's a wider variety of criminal activity now than ever before.

What do you guys think of 2 eras? Is that possible? Story line starts in the 70s or 80s and finish off in modern times. Let's just say the protagonist does a 20+ prison sentence. Or the child of the protagonist finishes the story

I mean on paper its a good idea but if you're going to have a game like that more than likely its going to be quite linear. But given the mission design of RDR2 its expected so I mean why not. It's interesting, fresh and might actually churn out a plot that isn't the same bland revenge story or rise to power story we've been getting for the past 20 years.
