However, the only problem I see in a cross-era GTA is a technical problem: it should have two versions of the same map, each of them adapted to the era the story is set in (period-correct buildings, streets, road signs, billboards, etc.), compromising its size and depth in details.

Mafia 2 did it beautifully. It had a huge detailed city, great storyline and the most beautiful settings. I was blown away with the Christmas and Sprint atmosphere of that game. If Take2 could do it, so can R* North.

It can do both. Mid 2000s.

It needs to go to 1900 like GTA 2.

GTA 2 was set in 2013.

It was...but GTA 2 came in... Nevermind, I was just kidding about 1900, just would be silly to see grades with no cars or houses. GTA redemption lol

I can't believe their not many people

Who voted like 70s 80s or even 90s

on topic now it would be great if the next GTA will be modern like for example 2013 2014 or even 2010

What I don't like lets say 70s

1 phones would be only have call if you had a phone at all

2 car shops wouldn't even exist so you can't upgrade anything the entire game ok maybe a couple of car shops but you can only respray the car nothing else

I could go on all day but I'm a little bit in a rush so I'm done for now

I'd love to see the next GTA to be set in the past. There is so much potential, no matter which decade.

It's my #1 wish for GTA VI.

I think it would be hard for the next GTA to be modern as Online pretty much used up all modern car designs and the theme is gonna be difficult to incorporate in a large game.

Of course you could upgrade and customize vehicles in a game set in the 70s.There were already many custom vehicle styles (hotrod cars and bobber bikes were around as early as late 40s/early 50s, lowrider cars, chopper bikes and cafe racer bikes appeared in the 60s...).

And who cares if phones would only be used for calls,in some 3D GTA games we didn't even have phones, there were beepers instead, they were still great games.

No matter how much i like 80s music i don't think it's a good idea to recycle to 80s unless it's 1989, cause there would be typical 80s design cars and older but also pioneers of 90s design so it'd be similar to San Andreas 1992 diversity, only probably fewer typical 90s design cars than SA. But then again, design and shape diversity of new and then modern cars would be somehow lacking in 80s just like in 70s, which is why if it'd be set in 80s (again  ) or 70s and they decide to put twice as many cars as in V enhanced + dlc from Online, there could be too many then new and modern cars with similar design and shape, and even tho i voted for 70s, i think modern setting is better if they will put 700-1000 civilian cars (in singleplayer!)

I don't know,IMO there's much more similar looking cars these days than in the 70s or 80s.Back then you had muscle cars, boxy American cars, both luxury and cheap sedans, station wagons, sports cars, coupes and compacts (it's pretty much impossible to mistake a Lambo Miura for a Renault 5, a Pontiac Firebird for a Mercedes W123, a Datsun 240Z for a Cadillac De Ville, or a Ferrari Testarossa for a BMW E30).There would also be a lot of cars from previous decades,50s and 60s.In 2010s most of the cars on the market are SUVs and some similar looking sedans and compacts.

Probably you right, but i meant everyday cars like sedans, suvs, coupes, compacts etc, especially when it comes to shape or chassis. Ofc theres a lot of design and shape diversity and variety in sports, muscle, exotic, some special classes maybe in 70s but when it comes to sedans and other everyday cars in that time theres some variety only in design mostly, but maybe i should read more wikipedia articles and watch more movies

I could be wrong, but from what I've seen in movies and TV shows set in the 70s in the US and read on the internet, the most common cars were muscle cars, they were cheap cars for average working class people, pretty much what compacts and cheaper sedans are in Europe (I've heard there was an attempt to replace them with compacts like Pacer and Pinto because of a 70s oil crisis, but it failed),while richer folks would drive big boxy yank tanks like Cadillacs and Lincolns. In the 80s,muscle cars and yank tanks were still common, but there was more imports from Japan and Europe. In both decades, luxury European sports cars (Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche...) were popular among those who could afford them. There were also soccer moms in station wagons, there were some hippies in VW Beetles in the 70s,rural folks in trucks...IMO that's more variety than 70% of cars on the streets being SUVs.

Here's how I see it. The modern era is absolutely what we should stick to. There's something kinda neat about going back to story mode and realizing just how much has changed in the 5 years since 2013. Doing stuff satirizing what's happening in the moment is what makes GTA to me. Sure, San Andreas is my favorite game in the series, but GTA IV and GTA V both made their world spaces modern and interesting.

However, if we are doing Vice City in the next game we should probably go back in time. Modern Miami just isn't that interesting outside of spring break. But we shouldn't go to the 80s. I know, that's what everyone wants. A lot of people seem to just want a true HD remaster of Vice City. But we've had two games in 80s Vice. We need to go back further.

There's a movie called "The Miami Story." It's a Noir flick, 1954. Pretty decent film. But imagine Rockstar's satirization of 1950's America. All the Communist paranoia and the racism. Habana is still the hot spot, full of night clubs and casinos. Wouldn't be closed of to Americans for almost a decade. Now put your character in there. Maybe he's Italian mob, fighting the Cubans for control of the needles and clubs. Maybe Vice Versa.

Whatever the next game is, and maybe I'm in the minority here, I just don't want to see 80's Vice again. It was fun then, those games are fun now. But I don't want to see GTA retrod old ground.

But still i'd prefer one of these 3 years: 1995 (Bad Boys), 1998 (Will Smith - Miami) or 2003 (Bad Boys II)

I just started watching this show called "future guy" on Hulu and it got me thinking why not have some sort of time traveling in gta? I think it would be a cool twist if some where in the story something happens that requires the character to travel to the past which could be the 80s or some other era.

Giving us two versions of the same city that players could explore in online after completed this part. Sounds silly but we all know there's already quite a bit of silliness in GTA and I'd think this would fit in just fine.

Or like in Driver Parallel Lines! Maybe if set in Vice City start in 80s and as the story progresses, protag gets fast forward to modern times or some of the years i already mentioned before. And after finished game the player can choose which era to switch to

I can't see them going too far back in time. The current era lends itself perfectly to those extra elements such as Snapmatic for instance, which adds to the longevity. Could hardly use a smartphone to snap pics if it were set in the 30s. Practicallties of the era aside, I'd love a GTA that would takes place during and focussed on the Cold War, with both the 60s and 80s being good candidates for a fitting era. Plenty of food for satire and an exciting story, especially if it's from the perspective of someone with Soviet ties in one form or another.

it would be interesting to see the cold war in a gta

I would love it if they went back to Los Santos, Vice City or Liberty City in the 80's.

More great 80's music, classic 60's, 70's and 80's cars.. perfect.

2000's BUT with lots of prologue missions where you go into the 80s with old-style stuff like old phones, cars, clothes, etc. Similar to North Yankton in GTA V.

It has to take place in the time from 1983 to 202x if there is a Online Mode and we can be sure there will be an Online Mode. The first mobile phone officially was released in 1983 (they started devoloping it in 1973) and playing the game without any phone would just suck. It would mean no mechanic, no pegasus etc. except we could do that via quickmenu or whatever.

I mean theoretically we could use car phones invented in 1946 but it would be inconvenient as hell always having to sit in a car to call somebody or get called. It would really really suck.

Im okay with it if the game plays in the 70`s if we still get our mechanics and other stuff. I mean eveything after the helicopter was invented would be okay for me. GTA would suck without choppers. I could live with only old cars and fashionwise it would be okay too.

So 70`s - 202x would be okay for me as long as we have our mobile phones or other ways of communication (like radios) while in missions etc. cars and clothing aren`t so important to me.

I don`t want it to play in the future im gonna play Cyberpunk 2077 for that. :D

Then hopefully PS5 gets announced this year and released mid 2019.

Cause its been nearly 6 years and I don't want to wait 15+ years for another gta with flying cars around.

The  deluxo was created in the back to the future and its already up for sell, wtf.

I bet the deluxo and other already purchasable flying cars, will slowly go up for sell as we progress threw the story campaign like how gta 5 did.

I think probably the modern time even though I would love to go back in time; maybe 70s or 80s. So much satire to draw from would make the story even more interesting in a GTA world.

A modern time setting could run the risk of being too tech savvy and feeling like another game.  I think the southern boarder with Mexico and parts of Texas or California would be a good representation of current time strife and criminal activity.

Well I think rockstar never nailed nature of late 90s .Or If you want that era before 9/11, after 9/11 we get mostly sad things in televisions, movies.

I want era of over the top catastrophic movies, crazy popculture things, new technologies and Pierce Brosnan as Bond.

Maybe they could do both? Playing as a character in modern times or going back to the past as another. I prefer the past, but I know that's not for everyone.

Late 70s/80s would be cool. Miami Vice-esque. Play as a Crockett/Tubbs duo. Be undercover trying to bust drug lords and cartels from the inside.

Modern times would be cool too I guess. Just have a throwback radio station(s). Kind of off topic: It's already too late I'm assuming. They probably set it in modern times and considering how long it's taking for them to announce it, I believe it's gonna be a huge game that will have multiple cities.
