That wouldn't work too well, people would be like "Uugggh, there is no electro music, rockstar u suck", "what is this horrible crap? Where's the dubstep in this game?" and other stuff like that, and radio stations wouldn't be varied, in the 50s there was classic rock, jazz, country, blues and not really much more.

its easier to appeal to mediocre masses with metal music and rock, rather than electronic music, which like 80% people here could not identify with propper subgenres, nor appreciate them, so uhmmm.. people would be more like "ugh, there is no rock music, like in every other gta".

also i dont know how such track

could fit this serie. lets be honest, rockstars dies inside after The Benz' departure. flying bikes, rocket muscle cars, trailer missile launcher? ehmmm.. actually i would not want to have dubstep in such bullsh*t game, which GTA sadly became after last 3 years.

I very badly want a San Fierro/Northern San Andreas setting in the 1970s.

Leave past to Mafia.

Also whatever they do, please don't do Vegas. This is such a boring sh*tty city in the middle of a goddamn desert and all it reminds me of is crowds of tourists and casinos that scam said tourists.

vice city in the 90s?

Early 90s Vice City, desperately clinging on to the cocaine cowboy era in a struggling economy, sounds interesting.

It should be set in the far future. Opens up so many more possibilities than allowed in the past or modern age.

A game set in the 60s or 70s would have an incredible soundtrack. Vice City already mastered 80s music and I doubt they could top it. A game in the future would have futuristic J-Pop as that is the pinnacle of human creation.

Liberty City in the 70s.

Oh my goodness.

If you want Nostalgia, go pre-order RDR2. If you want modern las vegas and miami, wait another delayed gta game.

Wild west =/= nostalgia.

Nobody here was alive in the late 1800s/early 1900s.

Modern times is boring af. We already got two games of modern GTA, time to go back.

Being realistic it's probably gonna be set in mordern times.

But I think 80's / 90's would be fun. Better cars, better music, etc!

They won't copy Mafia 3 and do it in the 70's for sure!

And for the future one I don't know honestly! It could work but I don't think R* is aiming at that tbh!

I don't see any reason to go back in time. They've showed Miami and its drug war in the 80s, LA's gang wars in the 90s, NY's italian-american mafia in the 00s and their fall in '08.

I don't see why not 70s if there was GTA London 1969/1961, and Mafia III is set in 1968, the same era/decade as London. Now in 70s maybe SF, Chicago but i don't want LC

70's

357 Magnum

Snub Nose .38

Vietnam Era M16

AK47

Mini Uzi

Uzi

Vietnam Vets crazed and broke

Dead presidents style robberies

Dilapidation

Drugs

Political corruption scandals

Crooked cops

Goodfellas style wiseguy action

Disco clubs

Black Panther knockoffs

The Warriors style street gangs

Biker 1%'ers in their Golden Age

Triads

Plain Clothes cops
Style Wars graffiti wars

You serious? This should have been touched on in the 3d Era when they were doing VC and SA. The 70's NYC was the craziest time ever.

This was back when you could roll up on a dude on the street and shoot him in the face and if there was nobody to see it then the cops couldnt do sh*t. No DNA evidence, no surveillance cameras, no bullsh*t. It was war in the underworld in these times.

The Paradox

Go back to starting of the 2000's. F**k the modern times, we saw it in gta 5. No just no, go back to 80,90 or even starting of the 2000's but not modern times. In the old times we don't have smartphones, unrespectful stupid ng players, people speak with each other(in real not in facebook)everything feels alive and has a soul, people are more friendly, musics and games are not robotic...

I don't see why they can't take creative liberty and make a game that takes place in modern times yet has a retro aesthetic in certain parts. Maybe has a modern smart phone but the character rocks baggy clothes and the city is a gritty neon lit place. Why does "mdoern times" have to be the real modern times?

That being said, early 00's was the pinnacle of human society!

If GTA:SA brought us multiple cities, and GTA V introduced multiple characters... maybe GTA Next will bring us the same setting in different eras —modern times and, say, the 80s—, with interconnected storylines, à la Driver Parallel Lines.

Gta Sa also mixed up 2 states... Gta 4 Complete Edition was actually the 1st to introduce multiple characters... Gta Next in different era would be cool and also a kick ass female protagonist.

Gta Next can prologue 3 different citys including San Fierro, for like future games and 12 missions divided between them. But this time being interactable, explorable and can't leave till you past the last mission.

I've always thought a multi-decade/interconnected story would be very cool in a GTA game. Like it starts in the 80s and ends up in the 00s or something. The only problem with this is it would most certainly need a story component to make the changes (city, clothing, cars etc) seem believable like the protagonist gets thrown in prison or falls into a coma for a few years.

A work-around for this would be to have multiple characters in multiple time periods with their own campaigns that you can switch between via the start menu. They don't even have to be closely connected to eachother. This way you can play through multiple campaigns in multiple time periods and be able to freeroam without having a reason to "go back" or "go forward" .

So for the sake of having a concept model I'll use this as an example.

Campaign X - 1976

Campaign Y - 2002

Campaign Z - Modern day

You can do a few missions on Campaign X , then go to the start menu and choose Campaign Y. You become Campaign Y character at that point. Do a few missions, get bored, go to Campaign Z via the start menu. Bored of missions? Wanna freeroam in 1976 again? Access the start menu and go back to Campaign X .

This way you can go through each Campaign at your own pace. No forced switching like V, yet the content variety of IV. Players will have 3 campaigns to play through and can come up with their own favorites. This would be good because R* wouldn't have so much invested in pleasing everybody with one story and setting.

It would essentially be like playing the 3D era Trilogy games through the same interface. The stories cross at times with little cameos and stuff but for the most part they're their own stories in different time periods.

The campaigns could even be relatively short, yet dense and focused, with many freeroam activities.

I think considering IV and V have stuck to present day they should continue with it. Plus is means any news related media can cross over to other places as hidden Easter Eggs.

That is one possibility, just like in Driver: Parallel Lines, same character, different eras. However, I was thinking more about different characters, but with a common guiding thread connecting them. Think about an event triggered or suffered by the first character, that prompts a second character many years after to pursue the story (e.g. a revenge).

However, the only problem I see in a cross-era GTA is a technical problem: it should have two versions of the same map, each of them adapted to the era the story is set in (period-correct buildings, streets, road signs, billboards, etc.), compromising its size and depth in details.

A work-around for this would be to have multiple characters in multiple time periods with their own campaigns that you can switch between via the start menu. They don't even have to be closely connected to eachother. That was my idea, switching between eras (and characters, if it's the case) like we can switch between characters in V, but with complete liberty. It would be a little boring if you have to complete the whole story in one era to unlock the next one (quite much when in previous GTAs you had to reach certain milestones in the story to unlock parts of the map -- that really frustrated me in SA and IV).

And yes, I think every era has to be unique, not just the setting (places, cars, clothes...) but also the side activities and missions. For example, if there's a '80s/early '90s setting, it would be great to see those GTA:SA arcadey video games -- Go Go Monkey or They Crawled from Uranus, anyone?, that would no longer exist in a current-era setting.

That would be amazing but because of Rockstar's online obsession it won't happen.

I prefer modern times. The cars look better but the music isn't that good, and maybe there will be better looking houses or buildings that look shiny rather than dull.

I think that a return to previous decades may be necessary.

I feel as though the cities used in GTA iterations ought to be 'international' cities, that is, set in locales that are recognisable to people all over the world. These cities need to also be iconic, and at least interesting.

The prevailing issue, however, is that NY and LA have been used too recently. San Francisco has already been attempted by WD, and there aren't really any other places aside from Miami or Vegas that could be used - but would either of these cities be sufficiently interesting in reality, to be implemented in GTA?

The only other place that I can think of would be Detroit, predominantly due to the level of crime and gang violence that the place posesses.
