Antagonist?

Recommended Posts

Francesco Bonomo

We've seen numerous memorable antagonist with different motives. Catalina from GTA III, Sonny Forelli from GTA Vice City, Frank Tenpenny from GTA San Andreas, etc. In GTA V, I was confused with "who" exactly was the antagonist. Yes Devin Weston was an annoying rich guy that you'd love to kill (In game of course *wink wink*), Steve Haines could qualify as a great antagonist but I like him. I don't know but to me, he was likeable. Merryweather, we just bullied them really.

So instead of a poll, I want you's guys opinion on the antagonist for the next GTA game.

Here's mines:

A mixture of Dimitri Rascalov and Frank Tenpenny. Someone who becomes your friend but turns on you as part of a diabolical plan. Maybe a corrupt politician with a lot of power and connections but with Steve Haines "I own you" attitude. And make him the only antagonist. Maybe have a few sub-antagonist (i.e. Like Eddie Pulaski). Make me hate him and not be annoyed by him.

So there's my antagonist. What do you guys think? Also please post your's also.

I can't offer any Antagonist 'Types', but I'd prefer fewer of them. I feel that V diluted the Antagonist pool too much.

My dream antagonist would be a depraved homosexual sissy villain...He has all of the stereotypes of a campy Gay dude, but at the same time he's batsh*t crazy...One or two missions that he gives you(before he turns on you) could be about hunting down hot guys, and taking them to him so he can do things to them...It could also serve as dark comedy, just imagine a dude with a very Gay lisp saying stuff like:

"Hold still, sweetie, so I can slit your throat open..."

"Too bad hot guys' corpses can't have orgasms, I'm a HUGE cumslut!"

Or OP's idea works too...

^Ahhhhhh too far. A homosexual villain could work like Raoul Silva from James Bonds', "Skyfall" though.

I want a threatening antag that no one dares to cross paths with. With connections so high up, you can't trust anybody so unexpected twists can happen.

Those dialogues you wrote sounds like they come straight from an horror porn movie. I'm in.

I would like to see a character like Tuco Salamanca. Someone who is extremely violent, unpredictable, and doesn't use logic, or reasoning.

That formula worked so well for Tuco in Breaking Bad that he is one of the most remembered villians in TV history, and he was only in (i think) 4 episodes. Granted, he has now been in Better Call Saul also, but he was remembered before BCS.

I know this has been done before in GTA, I mean, hell, even Trevor holds alot of these traits, but I don't feel it has been executed as well as Tuco was yet.

Someone that gives you chills when they come on the screen.

Vaas from Farcry 3 would make a good GTA antagonist (which is funny, because the actor who plays Vaas is Tuco's right hand man in Better Call Saul)

I want someone who is real threat all the time for the protagonist(s) who is not only evil, but methodical, a mastermind who can pickup the pace as the story goes on, somebody like Gus Fring from Breaking Bad, a real chessmaster.

Also, please don't make him/her as the typical friend or friendly guy who stabs the protagonist(s) in the back, that sh*t is old already.

Bonus points if the antagonist is a woman, that would be refreshing.

I'd like an antagonist that, because he knows something about our protagonists path, he's able to blackmail our protagonist into doing his dirty work...similar to what Michael went through with the feds in GTA V. A lot of people didn't like that but I think it was just poorly executed.

Oh, and the antagonist of GTA V is Trevor, Trevor Phillips.

Seconded. Tuco worked out very well for BB and we haven't really seen an antagonist like that in GTA. Combine Vaas with Tuco and you've got a monster. We've really only seen antagonists that betray the protagonist in some way - with a combination of Tuco and Vaas, there could be a mix of personal longing and insanity. That I think, would work well for a GTA antag.

I think Ricardo Diaz from Vice City came pretty close actually. The problem was that the story telling wasnt as good back then. You really need the antagonist to literally breathe down your neck to get the real feeling of threat.

At the same time, I do think an intelligent, calculated antag could work too. Gustavo Fring, Hannibal Lector, or even John Doe from Seven. Kevin Spacey would actually play a really good antag.

We should be thinking about good actors to play these characters, because I have a feeling R* are going to use a lot more famous faces this time round.

I mean, all the previous games used famous actors for voice acting, why not in the HD versions?

All great responses, thank you all.

Here's my other idea for an antagonist

Someone that has made their identity a secret. Throwing a bunch of opposing characters at you making you unsure which one is the antagonist. And finally reveals himself and makes your life and progress, Hell. And given the option to kill him/her in a way that satisfies our hatred towards said person. A nice slow and painful death as we watch with a smile on our faces.

When everyone else thinks, we're the bad guys (the antagonists)

Hows that for a twist?

If R* are going to do Vice City, maybe Niko Bellic could be the antagonist? Remember Roman said in a text message to do the deal and then they could get a private jet to Vice City. I could actually see Niko as the antagonist in Vice City, with his cousin Roman as the silly but sadistic sidekick. Niko has formed an empire as a cocaine kingpin and finally has the big mansion, cars, women, parties. Imagine Niko Bellic hunting you down, damn that would be terrifying hearing his taunts "Stop crying and stay down!!" "Yeeearrgghh motherf*ckers!!!" "Having fun! Huuhh!!"

Imagine the phonecall taunts from him, saying how he's going to cut your fingers off. But Niko won't be the same Niko we remember him as from 2008. He would have changed a lot and is maybe fat with tattoos down each arm and maybe around the neck, with a shaved head and a moustache like Chopper Reed. He doesn't have much of a Serbian accent anymore and sounds more Hispanic from being around other drug lords and sometimes goes off on incoherent rants about things from his past such as "That Peg had it coming! Ray did too!"

3 playable story characters.STORY SET IN LONDON OR THE UK.OR HELL,MAYBE EVEN THE USA(these characters could be in Vice city for all we know)

1)Jason Statham type criminal(come on,you get it)

2)Idris Elba in Takers type guy (Takers.Yes I'm serious.Basically,African British version of Michael with a less annoying family.Sound good?OF course!)

3)The third guy would be....THE ANTAGONIST!*DUN DUN DUN*.He would be a super high ranking elite agent.

He would be like a Hitman agent 47 type guy...but with a more cocky, charismatic badass personality(think Dwyane The Rock Johnson fused with Agent 47).He'd try to track down the other two guys over the course of the story.

Endings would be different depending on your choices during the game. Some choices will lead to Antagonist(third playable character)"winning" but with terrible terrible terrible stuff for the criminals..Other choices lead to positive outcomes for the criminals but horrible and sad stuff for the Hitman guy(think killing Michael level of sad)

True ending would be :Agent guy and criminals cut a deal and do some epic gta action for a final mission and all three guys go off into the sunset.Agent guy getting glory and stuff. Criminals getting money and freedom.BAM!GTA 6!PLEASE!

Sort of what happened in Spec Ops: The Line? I like that.

This is good. Maybe even early in the story, you're assigned to kill him. But at that point you actually like him, so you end up letting him live, and regret it later.

But if you do kill him (on a replay of the game, or if youre just heartless) he doesnt actually die. so the game can continue.

I'd like an Antagonist that's related to the Protagonist.

And I agree with the post about Vaas' actor, he'd be a sick antagonist. :)

That would be pretty interesting not knowing who the bad guy is

Keeping his identity a secret everyone you meet is a suspect would really help things build up to the end

And a bent cop for a strong supporting villain that has a lot of pull and is working together with the main antagonist. Someone like this...

Maybe it'd be interesting to have the antagonist start out friendly and charming and to have motives that seem good, and then end up going against the player character completely accidentally? You split paths for a little while and the mission bosses you work for in the meantime have been forced to hire you specifically because of troubles that you helped set up in the first place but the player character vibes with what those other guys want (even if they are a bunch of weirdos) more than who they're fighting is going for (who at this point in the story is a big mystery)

And when the reveal does happen they're still obviously doing what they were doing before, the only thing that's really changed is that the player character has gained a few more perspectives

How about this- the player becomes increasingly paranoid and wants to cut people around him off, someone in particular, even if they didnt do much wrong.

I'd love it if the major antagonist was playable, and depending on how you play the game you get the good ending (in which the protagonist wins over) or the bad ending (in which the antagonist wins over)

I kinda like the idea of an antagonist who is just a scary name until near the end of the game.  A bit like, y'know:

All major protagonists i have met so far were backed up by their power/influence over the law/city. Tenpenny have the corrupt cops and gangs behind him. Rascalov build up a powerful gang. Weston owns many business and the Merryweather. How about an antagonist that posses little to no power over the city, who prefers to be unknown so that nobody would suspect him. Despite the limitation, he's smart enough to interfere the protagonist's career.

Final words, i'd like to see an actual mastermind antagonist like Lester, more brain than power. If i can choose the actor, i'd stick with Alvaro Morte.

What if the villain was Dirty Harry? I mean, not the actual Dirty Harry, but a knockoff of him directly.

Think about it. A good cop with solid moral values that is nevertheless willing to use violent and destructive and occasionally "legally grey" means in order to stop you. And this guy wouldn't just show up in cutscenes or missions either, like, if you got a high enough wanted level, suddenly this guy would show up, and he'd be stealing cars and using cover and picking up weapons just like you are, and he'd occasionally show up during one of the bigger story missions like your nemesis.

I mean, come on, think about it, right? Instead of being mafia dude or corrupt cop number 723 who just sends waves of unimportant cannon fodder after you until you kill him in a cutscene or a scripted sequence or shootout, now you're facing off against a maverick loose cannon cop who breaks the rules but gets results. The Chaotic Good to your Chaotic Evil. The Batman To Your Joker. The Skywalker To Your Vader. Not only that, he'd have a family, friends, understandable motivations for wanting to stop a violent criminal who's f*cking his city up day in and day out. Sure, his loose cannon methods often cause collateral damage, but he's out to stop you, the drug dealing murderous car thief who kills pedestrians for some sick thrill.

All of this back and forth culminates in one final big mission where you set off to kill this meddling loose cannon cop bastard once and for all. But then you finish, and you wonder. Are you really a good guy? I mean, you just killed a guy who just wanted to protect the city and it's people from your exploits. You just killed a man who wanted to be happy with his family and live in peace in the city you have destroyed so much. But of course you had to eliminate him. This is your city, you conquered it fair and square, shot up countless gang members and police to get there, and he's only dead because he was stupid enough to get in your way, to DARE to obstruct your path to the top, and now that he's gone, no one can stop you now.

I mean think about it. Generally speaking, you don't play as a good guy in any GTA game anyways. So why do the game stories always act like you are? I say let's have a game in which you get to be truly monstrous. A game where you are the real villain. There's not some mafia guy running sh*t behind the scenes, you ARE the mafia guy running sh*t behind the scenes. And that cop only did what he did, destroyed what he did, stole what he did, spied when he did, and killed who he did to stop you. But he couldn't. Because you are just that badass.
