Why do gamers feel the need to mod/hack/cheat in online games? *KEEP I

Arrows to Athens

Why do I feel like I've seen this thread before?

Anyway, people cheat because it gives them a sense of superiority and victory. Due to their unfair advantages and perks, everything is much easier for them. If they don't cheat, they will most likely lose, and when they lose, they will get angry, and that's not what they want, obviously. Plus, they find it fun.

I have heard numerous arguments and defenses about why people cheat/mod/hack these types of games and I still don't get it.

I still don't get homosexuality, but I understand it and as long as it doesn't affect me, I say 'each to their own'. I don't lobby against them just because I'm of a different mindset.

I'm in a roleplay crew, but I don't get that some roleplayers are so anal about it they put their characters to bed. I don't get it, but each to their own.

A rank 8000 with a billion GTA$ & a 250.0 KD ratio has only a spending advantage over you. The way I see it is that they take the ban risk with the account purchase. That's as far as it goes to me.

When it does affect you however, yeah I'm against it, such a being trolled by a modder on last gen. If that isn't the case and you're not affected, I'd suggest just minding your own business. It's far less stressful.

I work full time and have a family. I simply don't have the time or energy to dedicate to grinding millions upon millions to buy the things I want in order to enjoy the limited time I get on GTA.

I don't impact anyone's game negatively, simply keep myself to myself (and group I enjoy talking to) and enjoy the game.

So what if I have 100s of millions that I gained through not so legitimate means? Doesn't impact anyone else.

Would I like to play the game legit and enjoy the fruits of my labour? Of course. Can I? Not a chance with the massively over inflated prices.

Don't derail my point, I am talking about the people who transfer old gen modded accounts to current gen, the people who hack and abuse on PC and old gen are twats and deserve to be banned forever, but I'm playing devil's advocate for the transfers because I understand their motives and they are free to do so, it's still R*'s fault for making money harder to get and making everything expensive.

This is why the whole music industry cratered, in the original age of ripping CDs to MP3s. The products were too expensive for the fanbase. The industry had a greedy, single-minded business model (buy the whole CD, you little sh*ts, even if you only like one song) and the fans found a way to get what they wanted.

Same thing is true of overpriced software, which gets pirated, and overpriced textbooks, which get copied. The greedy producer gets nothing from these users because he tried to screw them so bad. Now here we are with GTA0 supercars that would cost $40 if bought with real money, or alternatively, a month of grinding. What are players gonna do?

EDIT: In conclusion, it's Rockstar's fault, for their business model, and their incompent implementation of it, which screws the legit players.

So you cannot enjoy the game by simply PLAYING it? That's unfortunate.

Because they're bored.

There's nothing to really "gain" from cheating, except maybe money. You might possibly impress that one guy out of a hundred who actually bothers to glance at your K:D if you modify it. But other than that, cheating doesn't actually give you anything other than access to all the toys in the toy box... ones ordinarily hidden behind a paywall, level wall or the simple fact that Rockstar doesn't want you to have them.

In a game where virtually all of the matchmaking modes are empty and freeroam is full of tryhards wearing all black while sitting in their safety bubble Kurumas, I'm not surprised that people very quickly dug in the game files looking for something more. And let's be honest, it's entirely Rockstar's fault they were able to do this. The game had basically no anti-cheat or file protection to speak of. There wasn't even a permanent suspension until well after the rise of hack programs.

Yes, I get annoyed when Timmy the Chinese 12-year-old downloads a script and blows up the entire lobby. But I'm not going to hold it against someone for downloading a menu just to try and get more out of what amounts to a very sparse, very grindy and very underwhelming online mode.

That's the equivalent of saying, it is the Banks fault that you robbed it, because they did not have enough Security guards positioned.

R* in fact, has been applying Security Patches since a long time, unfortunately the Hackers also Update their Mod Menus constantly so it is a vicious circle in the end.

I fully blame those who create these mod menus along those people who use them, there is enough in the game to do WITHOUT hacks, the game provides enough content in Singleplayer AND Online Mode, and most Jobs are NOT empty as you claim.

They do it because they want money for nothing. It's a very sh*tty trait that I see in people in real life on a daily basis.

Well for one thing, it would be the bank's fault if they got robbed due to a lack of security. Nobody would defend a bank who allowed their vaults to be pilfered because "they hired two security guards, they tried!"

But more to the point, there really isn't very much to do in this game. Jobs are exactly as empty as I claim (and once you hit a certain level there's little point to doing them, since you can immediately clear them with a high enough rank and arsenal.) Game modes tend to be totally empty if they aren't races, heist lobbies or whatever Rockstar is giving double payouts for. Free roam lobbies are little more than red dots heckling other red dots, yanking out instant-kill rifles and explosives the moment anyone comes within a few miles of them. I won't even bother elaborating on jets, tanks or armored cars.

I've watched hackers and their shenanigans. Many aren't very creative and just toggle on godmode or drop money bags on themselves, but others do more amusing things such as flying rocket-bus tours or putting everyone on a floating yacht fortress. It makes me wonder how much more fun the game would be if we could legally have a sort of "sandbox lobby," where you can spawn and create stuff on the fly just like hackers do. It's certainly more fun than doing a heist for the hundredth time.

Because that is the only way some people can win.

On the reverse side though, why do people that suck call the good players cheaters?

A level 96 said I was cheating because I sniped him off a jet ski like 10 times because he and his level 182 partner decided to jump me and they saw I was better than they thought so they tried to escape. I was on the Del Pierro pier and they were probably 300 so feet in front of me in the water and he said I sniped him from 3 miles away. Kid obviously doesn't understand distance. On a good day, I am extremely accurate with the Heavy Sniper and people like me are the reason Rockstar nerfed it. I met another really good sniper in freemode and dude was better than me. Seriously I couldn't even hit him, because his starfe game was really good. He's not a modder, he's just really good! Why do people call me a hacker to justify their lack of skill?

I really think connectivity might have something to do with why some people are better than others, especially in sniper matches. I know sometimes people can see me from a distance, but I can't see them. I changed the setting to the non energy saving mode on my HDTV and that fixed the issue.

I agree with the general point of your post, but why are you always giving off such obnoxious show-off vibes?

You don't see me claiming to be the best helicopter pilot around, or the reason the homing launcher was brought in. I'll be the first to own up to being better than most, but I do my best not to give off those vibes.

Besides, from what I've heard, you're always killing yourself when you get into trouble, so I'm not convinced people like you were the reason anything got nerfed lol.

I think the Heavy Sniper could deserve another nerf, it is really OP in VIP Missions like Yacht defense where it leads to people spawn killing you.

Read my post again. I corrected it. Happy?

Yes I did suicide a lot, usually because 1. a member of an organization started bothering me and next thing you know, it's 4 verses one 2. I'm being griefed by a jetpuss. 3. someone is continuously using explosives to kill me. 4. I shoot one shot and cops instantly start spawning on me. The last one is Rockstar's fault. Just because someone is a Psychopath it's really unfair to have cops only chase only them. This is true because I was losing a fight with another player and the cops were spawning on him and not me.

Because that is the only way some people can win.

sociopathy and entitlement.

If you're going insist on using the entitlement fallacy, at least use the proper term "self-entitlement."

Just "entitlement" implies they actually deserve something.

sociopathy and entitlement.

As if 99% of the GTAO playerbase (any GTA as a matter of fact) weren't sociopaths already lmfao.

You are on a forum for a game that revolves around stealing cars and murdering old ladies and you think sociopathy is an INSULT?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

A little, but it's not quite there yet. You're still attributing something to yourself (the nerfing of the heavy sniper).

Humility is a virtue.

I got a level 5 throw away account with modded money. I only use it to try out the super expensive stuff in the game, to see if its worth buying on my real account(Which is legit). In doing that I avoid buyers remorse and filling my pegasus list with garbage. I'm sure this will still be seen under a negative light by somebody, but i'd rather not blow 10m on an update only to get annoyed and try n sell half of the stuff back at 1/3 of the price.

I do simply PLAY it.

However with things being priced the way they are within the game, I would not be able to access, lets say, 75% of the games actual content.

I don't particularly enjoy the adversary modes etc. I simply mess about in freeroam (usually private) lobbies with friends so my ability to legitimately earn in game money is limited.

It's easy and nobody can do anything to stop me..

I work 45-52hrs a week, I don't have the time and nor do I care to grind anymore to afford whatever I want.. Hit a couple buttons and have Billions in my account is far better. I've earned about $200Million from grinding, I've done my share for now.

thing is didnt rockstar say they monitor everyones money and come up with averages to even out the cost of things therefore if majority have millions = the prices of stuff goes up like lowriders etcso in the end it kinda ruins it for the legit people too... not that i care i buy basically everything legit earning it on my own time when i want. Iv come across hackers who are in so much denial they seem to convince themselves they arent hacking it gets sad

this happened to me recently though an my game crashed if your doing this in a public lobby your a straight up dickhole no questions. I work 2 jobs just like majority of the people on here an im still able to buy the sh*t i want an play other games without cheating if your working buy a shark card an suppor the game?........

We all know cash is king in GTA and you fooling yourself if you think these guys don't affect you they do, they buy and can buy unlimited ammo, they have an edge over people that don't have huge budgets to sustain PVP battles.

I personally don't report cheaters, especially not high ranked ones >2000, but if I had to report them, I certainly would't tell them either, that can be a double edged sword and they can claim you cheating as well. I have heard people getting sent to bad sport as a group of cheaters who know how to play the system can report no cheaters. Report them and move along your way ...

On the other side I don't blame people because yes it takes too long to earn money to buy the nice stuff, but that's part of the challenge. I would think cheating would ruin it for me, although who wouldn't like $2 Billion :)

People don't have time to play and I grind just for the sake of grinding, and I shouldn't have to.

Shark cards are over priced for what you get, you should get a lot more money for what you pay, they would also probably sell a lot more if they were reasonably priced.

That has to do with supply and demand and the kind of audience who buy Shark Cards.

Usually people who have I would say "enough" money buy Shark Cards, people who go to work, come home don't have any time playing the game but want to have 2 hours a week of fun, business man etc., these people have no problem whatsoever affording Shark Cards so as simple as that the Shark Card prices are pretty high.

Now at specific times, for example right before Christmas you will see massive discounts on Shark Cards, along with big(mostly expensive) DLC releasing...why?

Simple, because at Christmas time even the people who usually do not buy Shark Cards are more likely to spend some money on them, especially when they are discounted, throw in one of the most requested things from the community and something that is actually worth buying, (a Yacht) and you get GTA Onlines most succesfull month in producing Shark Card revenue.

Additionally Cheaters gaining money DOES affect our gameplay experience, why?

Simple, R* uses metrics etc. to calculate the average money a player has available, and out of that then calculates "fitting" prices.

Now usually cheaters are sorted out for that kind of research, but as always the system cannot get everyone, and as a simple result you as a legit player may suffer a disadvantage such as too high prices because of cheaters.

That last dupe glitch that came along people could make roughly $250 real dollars worth of virtual money in about 40 mins.

Better that money go on family and mortgages than paying off rich peoples mansions. Maybe if it was 20 real life dollars for a 5 million gta bucks.

There's your answer.

As for gameplay glitchs, I don't agree with those.

You want to cheat money or use harmless mods fine, could care less. My first post really wasn't about them. Personally I dont, because I want to enjoy the game by earning my sh*t.

But killing other players with cheats/exploits/glitches/mods, those are the worthless pieces of sh*t I was talking about in my first post. They can DIAF

Just wanted to make that point, because my first post bunched up and stereotyped a lot of people I'm sure are cool IRL.
