Will Rockstar return to a single protagonist?

End game being

Option A Crooked Cop kills Drug Lord

Option B Drug Lord kills Crooked Cop

Option C They work together to take down whoever tried to set them up or something.

Sounds good to me but something seems missing that I think a third character could be useful for. There's gotta be someone in the middle that interacts with both sides throughout the story imo. I'd rather the cop not start out dirty but at some point the game gives us the option to make that decision ourselves or stay on the right path.

Which could play a part in the Drug lords decision to to take the cop out in Options B's storyline. The Third character should be someone that's associated with both character better than what they tried to do with Franklin's stuff with Michael and Trevor. Like either a family member, mutual friend/contacts family member or something like that.

So, exactly what GTA V did? Which was trash. Don't get me wrong, V's Option C was a lot better than A or B--but the thing is it made A and B completely useless. It's also very clear that they didn't put a whole lot of effort into A or B since they had C to go with.

IV did it right by having only two choices, and if you're going to off one of the main characters and only play as the other post-game--having to pick either or would make that a lot more impactful. Otherwise, what's the f*cking point of getting rid of one or the other in two different endings, if there's one where you don't have to lose either? You're just shooting yourself in the foot.

The problem with the 3 character switch is that the three characters were a gameplay patch for incongruous reasons why people play GTA in the first place which put a constraint on characterization.

Story/crime fantasy, general destruction and never finish the game, people who worship CJ from San Andreas.

Honestly the 3 protagonist thing was a cool new feature while it lasted, but ultimately I cant see Rockstar doing it again.

It just lead to an unbalanced story with some characters being neglected. Let's face it GTA V was all about Michael - Trevor and Franklin should have been supporting characters.

What Rockstar needs to do is...

-Go back to having one protagonist

-Set the game during the 70's

-Introduce us to a new city

These three things will be the foundation of GTA 6 being a great game.

I wish its only one, but 2 is okey. 3 is too many because they feel a little, lame, backstoryles and feelingless then.

I hope they will bring back a single protogonist. Because it's way better.

For you, way better for you. We've done three perspective's before - if you play out GTA IV and the two other Liberty Stories in "order" it's an incredibly dynamic tale. GTA V could have been something more group oriented, but, again, the characters were based on different preferences of gameplay style.

The majority of GTA players don't get halfway through the storyline, let alone complete it. What you, or I, prefer doesn't matter. The Houser's are going to write whatever crime cosplay movie they have on their mind and that's that.

Speaking of preference: I would enjoy if the Housers doubled down on their love of crime and made GTA 6 a two-person perspective narrative, like De Niro and Pacino in Heat.

Doubtful, though.

This so much this. Two protagonists hunting each other down.

If they go that route I hope they include some form of the Coffee shop scene.

Just reviving this again as I feel its still relevant.

Its interesting that Rockstar used a single protagonist in RDR2. I wonder how that will affect their decision making with regards to VI?

This is just speculation on my part, but I think part of the reason why we had multiple protagonists in V was cause of the heist theme, they wanted to impress on us that these were large scale robberies and had to be done by multiple capable criminals while also giving us the perspective of those criminals personal lives and conflicts.

Since the next GTA is unlikely to focus on heists again and given the success of RDR2 storywise and how many people resonated with Arthur, I believe R* will return to a single protagonist , though this is all just conjecture on my part.

Excellent post! I'd also say that in reality there are limited number of character types/backstories that can fit a protagonist. Having three allowed them to experiment and featured protagonists that couldn't really hold their own (Trevor) but I feel Rockstar will have realised this just made each one weak. I'd also so that using so many at once makes it harder to create protagonists for future games as they run out of choice. So yes, I too feel they will return to a single protagonist.

The only way I can see multiple protagonists working is if they do it like Scarface the World is Yours especially if its a rise to power Narcos storyline. Have a MAIN protagonist i.e Tony Montana. But then have your workers i.e enforcer, driver or assassin who handle side missions and sh*t.

I think 2 protagonists one that works their way up to be a drug lord and the other a dea aget tracking him down, would make for a pretty interesting story. Basically similar to narcos. And the two characters finally come face to face in old age after the story progresses decades. Would be pretty unconventional for a gta game but I think thats a good thing.

Two protagonists should be the maximum. In V, it felt like Franklin was just hanging around because they came up with the 3 protagonists gameplay gimmick but couldn't write the story to fit around it.

Please keep it as a trio, because we can hangout and have fun with another character like in V, and it's cooler tbh, just like this, a woman protagonist would be fine if it's part of the team 😁

I hope they return to having one protagonist,or maybe two.Three would work only if the game would have at least 100 story missions,so they could develop all three protagonists well. With only around 70 story missions, the only GTA 5 protagonist that was well developed was Michael,Trevor felt more like a comedic sidekick than a real person, and Franklin was just a bland stereotype of a ghetto thug who wants to get rich and leave the hood (and after he does,he just becomes a third wheel to Mike and Trevor for the rest of the story).

3 playable characters in GTA V was an exiting experiment. And in my opinion it shouldn't be necessary included in all of the next games. The most important thing about the GTA protagonist is that it should be someone we, players can relate to. Creating a gameworld and missions when 3 characters can interact and change during the mission is an overall good idea but it makes the game developing process more complicated and all these efforts could better be spent on other things. So imho in the next GTA there should be one playable character. But with all that said, the game requires an improvement regarding to relations with NPC's. More npc's to interact with should be included necessarily. We should be able to date someone from the internet similar to GTA IV, hire gang members to follow us etc. In conclusion i think the best option for GTA 6 will be one protagonist and many interesting characters and NPC's to interact with.

Don't get me wrong the switchable protagonist thing was an impressive gameplay feat and I can see why people would like it. But all in all I just think it was a bit gimmicky and the novelty of it wore off pretty fast. I kinda feel Rockstar will look back at it in this way as well so I wouldn't expect it to return.

However I still do think they're gonna want to do something interesting and unique with the protagonist this time around and I feel that will involve having multiple versions of the same protagonists in different time periods. Obviously theres been a lot of talk about multiple time frames through certain leaks, general speculation and looking at how they've played with the idea of different time frames in their most recent titles.

Considering that I think we may just see vastly different versions of the same character in different time frames. Then maybe once the story is finished there will be a time jump feature that works similar to the character switch feature in V where we could jump to whatever time period we we want to free roam in with the version of the protagonist that is present in that time period.

I prefer three, but in GTA V it wasn't implemented that great, so I get that's why people don't like it that much. The game sacrificed length and content just to have three protagonists. if GTA 6 have 3 i'm sure they'll do it right this time.

I always felt as if I lost a sense of control with three protagonists. When I switched away from one character, only to return 20 minutes later, they'd be wearing a completely different outfit (Trevor especially), driving a different vehicle, and will have moved completely across the map. It was a chore buying the latest/most recently unlocked equipment and guns for all three protagonists, and having three bank accounts to keep track of. I wasn't a big fan of it.

Yeah, I never felt connected to one guy that was my character. I felt like a pupeteer, micromanaging three 3 characters and 2 of them being annoying, bickering man-children. And the forced character-switching during missions took me out of the game.

Houser said something like having 3 characters and switching means you are always at the thick of the action. Yeah, that's a good sales pitch but did anyone ever complain that they weren't at the thick of the action in a GTA game?

For me personally, I couldn't stand Trevor. He was basically a 7-year-old's idea of a GTA protagonist in my opinion.

Franklin was alright, but Michael was arguably my favorite. As a result, I found myself playing as Michael whenever I could nearly 80% of the time. So he was basically my "chosen" protagonist. I'm sure R* didn't want that to happen hence why they implemented a few countermeasures. 1. Forced character switch after specific missions. 2. Forced character switch during missions. 3. Specific protagonist lock-outs at certain points in the story (there was a point when I couldn't switch to Michael again until I completed Trevor's introduction chapter). And that brings me back to the sense of loss of control.

I like the idea of Trevor. A meth-tweaking psychopath. He's supposed to be the personification of all the terror we like to commit in GTA. But the reality is, he's just very unlikable. He's annoying to be around, he's impossible to root for. Maybe that was Rockstar's intention. Maybe they wanted to make him so grotesque that killing him was supposed to be "the right choice." Maybe I didn't grasp correctly, or perhaps I wanted the option of him after I finish the story. I've a current GTA V playthrough. I might kill him this time.

Anyway, character-switching would be nice, if it was a 100% completion reward. I've always said this. We need a big, valuable reward unlocked at 100%. And character-switching combined with advanced character customisation would amazing. Being able to just f*ck around and free-roam as any character you want would be nice.

Imagine, once unlocked at 100% you can restart the story and play as your own creation.
