Will Rockstar return to a single protagonist?

Recommended Posts

RestUnknown

I definitely hope so!

The story was too superficial to be good enough with the three protagonists. Always switching and making (for me) a hard choice of who to choose when on a mission to shoot some people, made it a horrible experience.

It got the flow out of the game and introduced characters which you only met once but apparantly had a huge influence on some of them...

I just played Vice City out of nostalgia, this game is 10 times better as V.

Who knows, who knows... in RDR2 we will see again 3 protagonists and 4th as online character (rdr online). Maybe gta6 will be a gta 5 with insane expanded map with all cities from their past games with new characters, not character, even maybe more than 3 characters, lol. Who knows...

If R* are gonna roll with another multi-protag dynamic again, I would prefer if they widdled it down to just two protagonists. I think there's a lot more options for a much more closely-knitted story if there were only two playable characters with similar ambitions and motives, instead of forcing three disconnected crooks to rob a bunch of banks and sh*t. I mean the protagonist duo could be lovers (a la Natural Born Killers), siblings (perhaps brother and sister)...

That's exactly what I think that might happen, I doubt sincerely that we will have a single protagonist again, I also think that have 3 protagonist has not been a combination entirely satisfactory, especially because none of them ends up fully developed. My guess is that we will see 2 protagonists (well, at least it is that I want to) a male and a female character, I imagine they are brother / sister with a dark story in their backs, maybe a story a little more serious as in GT IV, but could also be a couple, why not ... I think that would be an excellent idea.

I would prefer to stick with multiple protagonists, 3 is the perfect number (2 wouldnt be bad either).
The thing is, with a map size like V's (which would be a standard I believe from now on), having multiple protagonists makes the gameplay much more fluid and dinamic. For example, lets say you are bored to play as Trevor in the desert, so you just switch to M or F and you are in the city now, this saved you from doing a long trip to the city (thing that you didnt want to do at that precise time) and the pace would keep smooth. This basically removes the potential chore of going from A to B when you dont necessarily want it, and I consider this a big big plus when it comes to general gameplay & exploring in a map as vast as V's for example.

Another advantage would be missions. The ideal way to design missions from now on would be to think about doing multiple tasks within a certain mission, so you could always switch between characters freely and at any time when you feel like doing a diferent task than the current one you are doing, this makes the gameplay more dinamic and varied, but for this to work, the mission design should be totally unrestricted and with enough freedom.

Also, having special habilities for each character is not a bad idea, the thing is that in V it was badly implemented, making the characters look like they had superpowers.

Some idea of inmersive habilities would be:

Character A: his speciality would be weapons for example. Less recoil, faster reloading (not necessarily speeded up animations, but actually shorter ones), faster weapon swapping, more acuracy while on vehicle, and so on.

Character B: specialized in vehicles, he would steal vehicles stealthy and fast like Franklin, would be able to fix engine damage (like Vito in Mafia 2), would recive less damage in crashes, less probability of flying off the windshield in a crash or falling off a bike (like Johhny in TLAD). More acuraccy while shooting in a vehicle, etc.

Character C: More agile, would jump a little bit higher, sprint, and walk while crouched a bit faster than usual, more stealthy, would be more resistant to falling damage and melee attacks, stronger melee attack and much more stronger and fit physically, he/she would have special animations when it comes to movility which would make her/him the most viable character to escape from police on foot for example.

This are some examples, of course there could be different and much better options, but the point im trying to make is that multiple protagonists makes for a much more diverse and fluid gameplay in general. If implemented correctly I would love to have this feature as a new standard for the upcomming GTAs.

In theory, and largely in the execution, the three protag thing was handled really well. What let it down was the three characters all being really f*cking boring or stupid.

With three very compelling, well-written characters, it could be something really special. I've said before (possibly even in this thread) that I'd like to see the three protag thing again, but handled like the three in IV. So, these characters can be switched between at any time, but they aren't friends. They don't hang out with each other, they only interact in a few key missions, like in IV, and are somehow drawn together for the climax - not necessarily working on the same sides.

I've suggested previously that we have a dirty cop with lots of connections, a hooker desperate to leave the criminal life and make a new start for herself and a low level car thief/mechanic whose stories are only slightly overlapping. This would allow for three longer, more unique stories, like IV's approach, allowing us to actually engage with and learn to love or hate the characters. Rather than giving us a brief exposition of each then throwing them together for the most of the duration of the game.

I doubt they will have one main charecter again. Although more work is required in the development stages if they have two, three or possibly four protagonists.

It could be nice if they make 3 protagonists like it was in GTA 4.

I really hope they return to the single protagonist. Gta5 story was kinda lame, and ruined the immersion for me. Gta4 had the best approach. 3 story lines interwoven, yet seperate, seemed like the perfect balance. Gta5's story seemed like a half hearted way to showcase the character swapping mechanic, instead of a deep driven story like gta4. A tech demo if you will. Plus gaining/losing weight is too hard with multiple protagonists. I loved making cj ripped in gtasa.

Well said, looking at from this angle it could (multiple protagonists) work very well.

I want one (1) protag, which is as developed as Niko, and not as underdeveloped as a frankling

That's BS, bro. Franklin was def not "underdeveloped', have you even played GTA 5 story mode?

He is as underdeveloped as it gets, completely bland & not really fleshed out at all. The whole story revolves around Michael and Trevor, Franklin only seems to be there for SA nostalgia and be the third wheel.

I'm not a fan of multiple protags/character switching. The whole switching so you are always in the thick of the action is crap in my opinion. Jumping from A to B to Z felt surreal, like I was never really in control, it was immersion breaking, hand-holding, game telling me what to do again, bullsh*t.

I'm not against the idea of multiple characters but I don't want to be switching all the time, not really feeling invested in one character maybe not giving a crap about another. It's a total gimmick in V. It's ambitious and sounds good on paper but the end result is poor. I'm not sure I enjoy playing two people that hate each other because It's basically playing against yourself as you play the other guy half of the time. In V there's a weird disjointedness I felt because Trevor and Michael hate each other. I never felt connected to either or never really felt I wanted either of them to succeed in any way. They were both snakes. I suppose I wanted to see Franklin succeed but for gods sake they just re-hashed Luis's story for Franklin. Minority meets some middle-aged white guy that's going to show him how to earn money out of the hood. I'm digressing.

Multiple characters would be fun if maybe it was a mission string or two that lets you play as another character for the duration of a section of story maybe not even crossing paths with the other playable character immediately, very little or even at all. IV and Episodes..' was great playing from different angles as the story intertwined and brought these vastly different characters together and their paths to cross.

If we went back to 1 single character, one to that doesn't speak too much, is whining or complaining a lot, just a likable Tommy Vercetti type, I'll be happy. Even a Michael without the family isn't that bad. Give us options to really customize the character so those of us that want to inject a little of our own personality on the character can do so. Those of us not playing the story or are making videos can customize the character to our liking and those of us that want to stay in character can. Real player choice and freedom.

Unlock underground plastic surgeon at story completion or 100% so you can change the ethnicity, facial features etc and basically full character customization so you can replay the game as your own creation or as Rockstar's vanila character.

Basically your singpleplayer customized becomes your online character. Might encourage people to complete the story?

I hope, that in next GTA (if it will ever be released) there will be 1 protagonist.

But, i know Rockstar*, after the success of V, there will be multiple protagonists.

I don't care whether we have one protagonist, or not. I also don't care about protagonist's/protagonists' nationality, gender, skin color, etc. I just want to have a well-developed playable character that isn't a walking bag of stereotypes, or an edgy "WAHWAHWAH LOOK I'M A f*ckIN' BADASS I'M THE BEST SO I'M GONNA TREAT ANYONE AROUND ME LIKE A TRASH" type person.

Well, I would like a female protagonist, and the only way we're going to get one is if she's only one of three protagonists (they won't let a female carry all of the story).

I'd like her to be a (somewhat) corrupt cop. Maybe with Cuban roots. Game set in VC (of course).

I think Rockstar should just make it so one of the protagonist spots has the option between a male and female character that way people who want to use her can, and those who don't would have an extra male character to play as for that part of the story.

Each character in that role being some what the same but slightly different if that makes sense to yall. I believe Rockstar could pull it off.

Max. two protagonists. One men and one women to bring some fresh air to the series. The story should be better than in V. Getaway had a great story with two protagonists.

I don't know, is character switching more fluid and dynamic? I think that's a subjective notion. Personally, I find being in control of one guy, going through a series of events in a structured mission to be more appealing. I find I'm more connected and invested with that character as apposed to being a puppeteer, multitasking, going back and forth to point where it's like your playing some real-time strategy game, micro-managing 3 people at once. I found it a bit tedious, laborious and a bit shallow in regards to not taking in the moments of the action but worrying about what the other two are doing and when I'm going to be prompted to change character.

I can see the advantage of having characters in different parts of the map and that you can essentially fast-travel to another location. However what if I'm Michael and I'm in the city but I want to be Trevor in the city but he's in the desert. It still means I'll have to fast-travel to the desert then travel normally to the city. Why not just make fast-travelling an option? Or maybe not. If traversing GTA's map is bothersome then maybe the map is lacking. But good map design should always make traversing fun.

I think there's better ways to make missions more dynamic and varied as you describe that don't involve character-switching. More dynamic gameplay that will satisfy longevity and satisfaction for me, would be to implement multiple approaches and by that I mean being able to come up with creative ways to reach the objective of a given mission. Implementing a stealth vs guns-blazing dynamic, giving the player the freedom to decide on what is the best approach to a mission. Also it could offer players to be creative in approach in problem solving a mission rather than just being handheld by instructions of where to go and what to do next.

there can still be single player jobs and 3 protagonists to conquer the hard ones is much better and efficient.

Do any of you guys realise here has ALWAYS been 3 protagonists in a way?

Thank about it...

3D universe, 3 seperate games and story's, BUT all the stories tie together, from different points of view and time periods.

GTA IV; Niko, Johnny and Luis. 3 guys, same story, same time.

GTA V; Mike, Trevor and Franklin, same story same time.

This was almost certainly always the goal, they won't go back.

Don't think we will see a single protagonists in the main games again, the map and detail is too big for one protag to have. A new side game would be a single protagonist.

I agree with multiple protagonists being a big change for them to do, but if they want to step it up after that, we need to see a woman protagonist next.

I dont get this argument at all. A map cant be "too big" for one character. That doesnt even make sense

Mocap isn't just done for the protagonist(s), you know? Just because he's doing some mocap work for the game doesn't automatically make him the main character. His work could be a NPC's walking animation for christ's sake.

I'll like Tim Neff, Asap Rocky and Scarlet Johanssan to be the 3 protagonists.

The 2 last ones are both from Manhattan, just like Trevor and Michael were from Canada.

But Tim i don't know as of Biography. These 3 people would be awesome, cause Franklin and Tim are different from the other people.

I'll say they'll return to 1 protagonist in GTA 7, but not for the HD era with slightly 4K involved.
