Don't forget about the IV anniversary in 2018. That might cause a bit of delayment.

I'd expect VI to release no more than by 2019/2020. Since Rockstar has other IPs under their belt, it's likely that they'll want to focus on those first before tackling VI. I don't foresee them releasing or even announcing VI this early.

Edit: this did NOT age well

@ Phnx - because they are minor titles :).

@ 7th - I see your point. I think April 2019 is a possibility but I think 2020 is too far. That would be 7 years in between GTA V and VI. I can't see it personally :).

i think 2020-ish. they want to milk Online a little more untill it dries out.

Plus, i don't think GTA VI is the next game to come. Back in the day they had multiple titles before an actual GTA with a number.

RDR2? I'm sure the series is called 'Red Dead', so it's safe to use 'The third Red Dead game' instead of RDR2, unless there's an official confirmation that it'll be called RDR 2. :)

The release dates of the titles with significant changes go like this

I - II = 2

II - III = 2

III - SA = 3

SA - IV = 4

IV - V = 5

By this, V - VI = 6

So, I'm guessing 2019. They'll mostly keep 2016 for Online updates, tease any new game and release it next year for current gen, focus on it till 2018, then begin teasing GTA VI and hopefully release it in 2019. Also, if you take in consideration the late launch of the CG/PC versions; you'll probably get a 2020-2022 launch, the game being exclusive for the next gen. But since it's Rockstar Games, they'll probably release the game on current gen consoles, so I am predicting the release sometime between 2018-2020. :)

I'm pretty sure that by 2020 and the next GTA's release we'll have a ps5 if you look at when the other playstation consoles were released.

What about announcement? We had a lot of delays with V, perhaps they will be more careful and give themselves more time. 2018-2020 has to be the timeframe for release if they want to keep the series alive, so we might get an announcement next year.

Late 2018-2019 Seems like a realistic window of time, at least as an initially release window. That'd put 5/6 years between the launch of V and the launch of VI. I think the most immediate focus marketing and newswire wise will be on the next Rockstar game in the lineup, which I have good hopes will be a new Red Dead. I wager we should be getting an announcement for that sometime around E3 or Q3 of this year. Reckon the announcement for GTA VI will be somewhere in Q4 of next year (2017).

Rockstar seems to be focusing on GTA Online and probably two other projects, as I still believe they're trying to revive Agent, and we might see a new game in the meantime. They're a big company though, so I'd expect the next GTA somewhere in 2018 or 2019, possibly at the same time as Agent or another new game, just like it happened with Max Payne 3 being marketed at the same time as V.

I don't think we'll get another GTA until 2019 or even 2020.. but I know Rockstar is probably eager to stay put and continue working on the next GTA title. I'm sure they want to top GTA V in terms of size, gameplay, visuals, etc. My personal opinion is that it'll be in a re-imagined Vice City, or maybe some new location. I don't have a particular bias against them using VC or a new city, I just want it to have an incredible map.

Besides, we don't know if VI is the next title. It could be a new Red Dead for all we know :)

RDR2

No.

Red Dead Redemption is already the second game of the franchise.

On topic, I don't expect an announcement until the end of 2017. They still have to milk GTAO a lot. I expect a release between 2018 and 2019.

Bender said the next GTA won't have a number. IMO that doesn't make sense, they made two numbered GTA's in a row and it would be kinda odd to go back to the old formula in the third game of the HD era.

Probably the most logical thing looking at how much it took them to get V out, it'd be out in 2018.

But now that we have GTAO, they've probably slowed down the making of the next GTA, first because GTAO is a great money maker and second because their focus is GTAO, so they must have much less people working in the next GTA that they'd normally have.

So maybe 2020.

The first videogames took less time to make. It's obvious that the newer videogames will take longer and longer to develop as we're seeing a huge increase in complexity, details, graphics, you name it.

Really really hope they don't use a number eventually they will run out of Roman numerals

Besides a third RD game and the inevitable next GTA, i'd love to see the first ever HD manhunt game...heck why not make it a smaller scale sandbox game and add RD/MP style online multiplayer elements?

Nah nah nah Gta 6

It really depends on what games they could make next, they could make a new Red dead, then a new Bully or even a new IP in the next few years and possibly have the same time, effort and focus as GTA V, with 3 versions of the game and an Online mode still being updated, this could delay the actual annoncement by a lot.

I'd expect to see an announcement during 2019 to 2023.

No they won't, Final Fantasy uses roman numerals and that's had way more games than GTA.

I know it's just me but in the future if they keep on numbering them GTA VII or GTA XVI just sounds ugly to me

Why didn't you consult LCS and VCS between SA and IV?

Because they were done by Leeds on their own and were helped by North only some, those weren't counted for that reason, I'm sure.

End of this year or 2017 for a new map and somewhat improved V engine, or 2018/19 for another big jump - which do you guys prefer?

Two thoughts, 2017 Announce 2018 release or 2018 announce with 2020 release.

These aren't just stab in the darks but thought out reasons, educated guesses.

(2017 announce 2018 release) = from GTA 4 to GTA 5 was 5 years, previous titles had similar time periods.

(2018 announce 2020 release) = Now with the inclusion of GTA Online and PS4/XB1 "next gen" I expect a little bit longer to make the game, also the rumors and many, many posts from Rockstar Employees on Twitter advertising positions / looking for people, also the rumor from same kinds of sources and alike stating the Rockstar Job posts are inline and fitting with a new RAGE engine based similarly to EA's "Frostbite" engine.

But with Take Two being at E3 2016 this year is either for a Mafia III release announce or a 2K17 game line up OR for Rockstar annoucing GTA 6 / GTA 5 Story DLC

Time will tell

Previous titles didn't take that long. 1 year between III and Vice, 2 years between Vice and San, 4 years between San and IV, 5 between IV and V.

I think it'll be sooner than you say because GTA V was a last gen game release wise and it was fully realized on PC and had a next gen version released between. They will make another game for this generation before catering to the new consoles.

People say they had to do it for old gen because "install base was small" on new gen, well, I don't think many people will be buying PS4.5 if they already have PS4 and no 4k TV. This just isn't something that will be adopted and people will be buying more PS4's instead of PS4.5 at cheaper price and expanding that install base more than people will just replace their current ps4 with another ps4.

Well considering how well the release schedule of GTA V worked out for them (as in convincing players to buy what was relatively the same game for full price upwards of three times across two generations of consoles and PC), I fully expect a similar approach with GTA VI. :turn:

That being said, I don't follow console rumours very much so is there any indication of when we should expect the 'next-gen' consoles? Many have suggested that the 8th generation won't last as long as the 7th, with some suggesting that the 9th generation of consoles could be released as early as 2018. However, I would expect that the recent announcements of the PS4.5/K/whatever, and Microsoft's interest in an 'upgradeable' Xbox One to play with those timelines. Regardless, could we expect a new GTA as early as 2018? :p

The next GTA is going to be released by 2020 in my opinion.

GTA V was released three times (+ Online), so I think R* is a little bit tired of GTAs right now...

I feel that they 'Shoot themselves in the foot' when they Announced, and released the Teaser Trailer of V back in November 2011.

When do I expect to hear about VI?

In a few Years, or so. :turn:

First and foremost, thank you to the moderation team for having established this sector of GTA Forums to facilitate initial impressions / presumptions about the prospect and evolution of Grand Theft Auto: VI. :)

Given that we are actually approaching the third year of commemoration for Last-Gen Grand Theft Auto: V in September, I would humbly postulate that this warrants some excitement and anticipation, for a definitive Newswire post authored by Rockstar in forthcoming months. :) My postulation is such, in that Grand Theft Auto: V had been officially affirmed on November 2, 2011, 3 years after the launch of Grand Theft Auto: IV.

If Rockstar elects to sustain that pattern of consistency, where the next installment is announced 3 years after the launch of the former, we could very well be acquainted with the official announcement somewhere between the vicinity of October, November or even December of this month. :) That will be of course providing that Rockstar has established the setting for Grand Theft Auto: VI and other pertinent details (i.e. the main protagonist) within the framework.

That would be awesome and maybe we would see a trailer accompany the announcement as we did when Grand Theft Auto: V was announced. If that does not come to fruition and Rockstar takes a different course of direction, I think that we would be informed of Grand Theft Auto: VI's official development no later than the end of 2017, and an official launch around the 2018-2019 range. The sooner the announcement, the better, as we then we can start delving into the intricate and epic detsils, of which I am sure there will be many.

To that end, I simply cannot express the degree to which I am excited about what exactly Grand Theft Auto: VI will entail and the scope, depth and verticality of the open-world, the storyline, the premise, the R.A.G.E. engine, availability of weapons / vehicles. My expectation of Grand Theft Auto: VI is to be tremendously blown away. :) Rockstar harbors the capacity to transcend and amaze; both Last-Gen and Current-Gen Grand Theft Auto: V have payed strong testament to that notion.

When that announcement is disclosed and ripples across the globe, it will be a great day. It will surely emulate the day on which Grand Theft Auto: V was announced. Set your cross hairs on either the end of this year or the end of 2017, ladies and gentlemen, for epic to strike. :)

I cannot wait for it all to start, by the chief determinant of time. Bring it on Rockstar, and bring it strong.

@ Agent

Good post mate. Rockstar usually releases about 18 months after announcement, notwithstanding that they ALWAYS delay the game.

Again those arguing for a 2020 release I just can't see it - that would be 7 years without a GTA, for some kids (let's be honest) that's their formative years without a GTA release.

Expect RDR3 out late 2017 but any other IPs (Bully, Manhunt etc will not interfere with GTA).

GTAVI will most likely be aimed for release in late 2018 but with the traditional GTA delay will be delayed until early 2019 :-).
