Oh really? So all those dots on my map are just special npcs? I think not, the very acronym of mmo stands for massive multiplayer online. Which gta online (apart from solo session option) is, so please refraim from saying such a dumb statement as "its not an mmo" thank you

This really didn't need a thread but ok. It depends how you define "MMO", to many people MMO means there are hundreds if not thousands of players in the same world, where it can also mean it's just a multiplayer game with a large world. Please refrain* from posting such dumb threads in the future. Thank you.

28 players isn't massive bro

28 players in a single lobby isn't but 8Million per week globally is. Players aren't forced to remain within said lobby.

Players create online versions of themselves and engage in an online world comprised of both other real people and NPCs.

GtaOnline is an MMO.

GtaOnline is an MMO.

Having lots of players only matters if they share content and experiences on a massive scale. Since you'll only be able to play with 30 people it's not massive.

I mean Fallout 4 has millions of players but they don't interact with each other so it's not an MMO. GTA still doesn't have enough people able to interact with each other at a given time to be an MMO in my opinion. In an MMO like World of Warcraft or Star Wars The Old Republic a server with only 30 people is dead.

Why is this significant?

It's the same game, no matter what people decide its genre is.

Where does this come from Hank? Did some random in chat debate this with you then suddenly left after saying "screw it i'm off to the forum"?

Anyway, it's an RPG, unless you commit crimes and own supercars, luxury condos & a real yacht, then it's a simulator.

It would be an MMO if it were mutliPLAYER. But it's actually just multiDOUCHEBAG. So I guess GTA0 should be called an MDO. :p

You have a point, but theres a reson why we are limited to 30 ppl the servers arent stable enough for more than that. But there are mmo aspects in gtaonline (As stated by someone in the thread)that still technically makes it an mmo. Despite it not being massive in terms of player interaction.

I saw it mentioned a couple times in other threads and kinda felt like i should correct this illogical line of thought.

It be like calling a nightclub "not a party hotspot"

Mmo refers to the amount of people on the same server. Not how many people play the game.

actually GTAO is still sandbox . but it has 1 resemblance to MMORPG :

the organization feature closely resemble to party group since the VIP abilities ( from drop bullshark to armor , from ghost organization to bribe police ) shared to all members ( except the drops , where they need walk through the items dropped by VIP ) and when the bodyguard enter VIP's vicinity , they doubled their stats

That's not strictly true.

For a start WOW and SWTOR servers work differently to GTA style servers, ie dedicated and not p2p.

And 30 people is plenty of interaction. Very few MMO's had hundreds (never thousands) of people in one area.

DAOC was one of few I remember ever having large scale battles with hundreds of participants. and when a relic raid was on the lag was horrendous.

SWTOR and WOW aren't total open worlds either. There are loading screens inbetween area's/planets and there are numerous instanced area's.

Each of those areas or planets is just like a singular instance of san andreas.

Yeah a 30 player count for swtor would be dead (it was sh*te anyway) but that's not how it's counted and not how GTA is counted.

If you had other maps too travel to, (LC, VC) and each could hold 30 players it would start to feel just as large as any other MMO on the market.

Multiplayer just means more than one player. Usually 2 or 4. Any game with double figures of players in one instance would be considered massive multiplayer.

So you're saying COD is an MMO?

Me personaly? erm kinda hovering towards saying yes.

I think some people are mixing up an MMORPG with an MMO but both are online and multiplayer and massive isn't quantifiable as a number.

How many players makes it massive? Massive is a buzz word to make it sound cooler than multiplayer game which it essentially is.

Planetside would be considered an MMOFPS but many cod players would consider their game massive and multiplayer too and it's just boiling down to semantics.

I mentioned this "GTA Online is not a MMO" thing multiple times.

And its true, this is the definition of an MMO:

A massively multiplayer online game (MMOG or MMO) is an online game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously in the same instance (or world).[1] MMOs usually have at least one persistent world, however some games differ. These games can be found for most network-capable platforms, including the personal computer, video game console, or smartphones and other mobile devices.

"large numbers" does not apply to 30 players, also GTA Online does not have any kind of instances or a big connected world, each session is individual.

Not sure about it being an MMO, but thanks to many forum members around here we can successfully confirm that GTAO is not The Sims. :p

any lobby can house 30 people in it max. that's you, 29 other people, and 2 rockstar employees. i consider it an MMO because of how many people can be in the same lobby (anything over 20 people with an open world becomes an MMO in my eyes(Battlefield doesn't count))
