Comics & Graphic Novels

Recommended Posts

I don't at all know if Comics fall into the 'Movies & TV' category, but who cares?

Yeah, sure, I'll play ball.

My mom and dad loved comic books, and I loved the old Batman TAS and Spiderman TAS.

And so the first comics I read were Spider-Man's special comic about 9/11 (Look it up, it's f*cking real)... And a silent Batman comic with no dialogue whatsoever and he just broke sh*t. I think it was black and white where the only colored thing was blood, and there was a lot of blood. I think the villain looked like Ghandi for whatever reason.

And all the ads involved corn bikers and very graphic counter-smoking ads.

Good times.

Yeah, that Amazing Spider-Man #36 was great. It's inspirational, self referential, and really puts everything into perspective. A heart breaking moment...

PS. I'm going to keep this here, and we'll see how it goes. But don't be surprised if it's moved.

I'd be happy to accept comics here, but as things go, most literature belongs in the writing section.

Thanks for reminding me. If we're talking comics in here, USE SPOILER TAGS!!!

No matter how old the spoiler, use spoiler tags. Most of us know "so and so" died in Amazing Spider-Man 35 years ago, but some of us don't.

So, how does everyone buy their comics? Digital? Physically going to a comic shop?

I buy from an actual comic shop. There's something about going down to the shop every week, getting to know the clerks, talking comics in person, and actually holding a book.

I'm bumping this because we had a big shocking week in comics.

I'll start with Steve Rogers Captain America #1. First off, Steve Rogers is young again. Still letting Sam Wilson use his shield. Sharon Carter is taking the reigns of SHIELD, and oh yeah...

...Cap might be a secret Hydra agent. Anyone who knows comics can say something is fishy. I personally don't believe he's been Hydra this whole time. It makes no sense. There's a good theory about how Red Skull was able to change Cap's memories due to having implanted Charles Xavier's brain a few years back.

I think the biggest revelations came from DC comics Rebirth #1. Wally West (the white one), lost since the Flashpoint was lost in the speed force. Slowly he tried to re-enter reality. He finally gets there, with a touching reunion with Barry Allen. But he brings news. The Flashpoint wasn't caused by Barry saving his mother. It was done by someone else... (Before you go further, if you haven't read This comic, and you are remotely a DC comics fan, go read it right now. This is huge.)

"There is a "Superman" and he's American".

Yeah. You read that right. Somehow Dr Manhattan and Adrien Veidt are behind the Flashpoint. They are bringing the Watchmen into the DC universe. I've got a big blue boner for this story.

It probably has something to do with the multiverse. The original one from before the new-52, the new 52 one (who is still pretty similar to the pre-new-52 one, and then the one we saw toward the end of Snyder's run...

who couldn't possibly be the new-52 joker, because of how "Endgame" ended. Although that would leave two, because of that same event, unless he also has a cloning machine somewhere. But it wouldn't be the first time someone survived something like that.

so I used to collect Sonic the Hedgehog comics by Archie.
it's weird because it's literally the only comic I've ever read in completion. I enjoy super heroes and whanot but I don't subscribe to any comics and never really bought them otherwise. but Sonic? I dunno what happened...

I've got the first 100 issues of the original Archie series, where they first killed Dr. Robotnik in the endgame, through the celebration/reincarnation series. and now that I'm talking about it, I had to dig them out. I've got a moving box full of these damn things. I guess it started when my parents bought me the first Sonic after it appeared in the magazine section of the grocery store. when I was a kid, we would always pass that aisle and I'd read something to keep me busy. usually car and paintball and video game stuff. after I started reading Sonic consistently, we would just buy the new issue every single month until I got too old to care anymore.

see issue #1, with the cartoon style drawings. no flare. no depth of color.
very silly story lines early on. nothing the least bit serious or dramatic.
1qhEHgK.jpg

compared with issues #47-50, a four part episode, where all the soap-opera sh/t was going down.

immense detail. rich colors. storylines with darker and a little more mature themes. Sonic is framed for attempted murder.

y90ShTg.jpg

continued into #48 where Sonic is no longer The Hedgehog but The Fugitive.
running from his friends, trying to figure out who set him up and how they did it.
gz9rOKK.jpg

and then of course, with the help of some unexpected old allies, he is able to clear his name.
there are lots of supporting characters from the spinoff games in this issue.
PDqqlbi.jpg

naturally then, #50 is part 4of4 which culminates in Sonic's ultimate redemption. fans of the video games would really appreciate getting to read and see how things end in this version. wish I could just scan/upload it but probably you can find them somewhere online.
Nxb4h8Q.jpg

spoiler alert. Sally lives.
they get married and stuff.
nUWEvdk.jpg

and we stopped buying them after 100 because, meh, I was getting over it.
100 feels like a good round collection. I love the artwork in these comics.

Patrick "SPAZ" Spaziante did most of the interior pencil work and the cover art for Sonic during this era. apparently the comic is still going, too. it's the Guinness record holder for longest running comic book series based on a video game. so that's fun.

Maybe Golden Age?

He probably has multiple personalities. Like Fight Club.

Ultimate-Spider-Man-Ultimate-Collection-

The best Spider-Man series I have ever read. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get into Spider-Man.

If there's one major problem I have with this series, it's bringing Peter back from the dead and revealing he was immortal. I think it cheapened his death alot.

I've recently been reading Punisher MAX, based on the recommendation of a fellow forum user.

Holy sh*t. I thought the Punisher was brutal on Netflix. Not even close.

I think I can convey this perfectly to anyone who hasn't read it...

The very first line uttered in the first comic is "f*ck you. Ya' piece of sh*t cocksucker!"

At the end of that first comic...

Wilson Fisk squeezes a man's head until his eyes pop out. He runs out of the house, with his eyes hanging by the socket.

He clumsily shoves his eyes back in only to see The Punisher immediately shoot him in the head.

Sweet Tooth is the first one I can remember. I know I read some as a young child but I can't remember any of those. Sweet Tooth was and still is my favourite.

Oh well. I'm pretty glad they decided to keep Miles around, though.

Man, I just picked up Batman: Rebirth #1. And I gotta say...

How the hell are these people gonna give The Dark Knight 3 The Master Race sh*t reviews, saying's it's mediocre.

And then turn around and give Batman: Rebirth #1 9s out of 10 and excellent reviews.

Rebirth is WAY less focused than The Master Race.

At least The Master Race builds up tension, and understands what pacing is like. Rebirth #1 was just a bunch of cool Batman moments.

And who the f*ck was that black guy, at the start? Did they put out a wanted ad or something? His outfit looks like a power ranger.

I'm not one of those people who calls every colorful outfit a Power Rangers costume, but...

TlCtif8.png

He looks like a f*cking Power Ranger!

So you don't like it because you have not read any of the comics that lead up to it, and have zero context to what's happening in Batman's world?

  • 2 weeks later...

Okay, so... I recently read Batman: Zero Year. It was actually more like a week ago, but I never got around to posting about it.

First off, I gotta say... I liked it. I really, really liked it. It was fun to read and had a great ending.

It was a lot longer than Year One. They both practically did the same thing, but Zero Year took 4 times as long to do it.

But as a result, it gave me more of what I loved about Year One. An uncertain and fumbling Batman.

The first 2 or 3 daring acts he did, I was sure he'd pull off. But no, he didn't. So I thought 'Fine, I guess he can recover from that.'

But what actually shocked me was... At one point in the series.

Batman tries to install a device, supposed to block the Riddler's power outage... Thingy. So he leaps onto a blimp (In a fantastic splash page, btw) and tries to do just that.

But he confronts Doctor Death, who consumes too much of his time in the fight, and the device falls completely off the blimp.

Batman, at this point, is just desperate and he starts whaling on the keyboard... But it doesn't work.

Batman fails miserably, and as a result, Gotham is plunged into the titular Zero Year, which looks straight up like The Last Of Us.

I thought that was amazing! A young and brash Batman going out of his league. He fails so badly, and thousands of people die because of it.

It was a great evolution of Batman, starting out as a guy throwing as many punches as he can, to something that resembles the modern Batman.

Now, there were some things I didn't like. First of which...

4JviMoH.jpg

ytLxH2p.png

I never thought I'd see Batman say "Yeeha!"

That problem kinda faded out after the Red Hood arc. The problem was...

Batman was trying to Quip. And not only was he trying to quip... Batman wasn't clever enough to quip well!

"Because" - Great comeback.

"Yeeha" - The Dark Knight.

Another thing is... It was a little obvious that Bruce Wayne was Batman. Lemme just lay out his return to Gotham, from... Gordon's perspective.

First, the media catches a sh*tload of pictures of Bruce Wayne, then legally dead, in a museum.

Then, a few days later... The media is surprised again that he's alive, forgetting the museum thing. When he goes out in public and outs the Red Hood's plan. His evidence? "Their leader tried to kill him, and told him their plan." How is he the only survivor of a Red Hood Gang attack? Iunno... Everyone knows dead billionaires are survival experts.

Then, after all that's over... Bruce gets attacked by Doctor Death. After he survives that... He openly discusses his privately gathered intel about the Riddler's plan and Doctor Death, with Gordon standing right behind his curtain.

When Gordon approaches him... Bruce tells Gordon that he thinks he's a corrupt cop, getting paid off by clothes stores and sh*t.

And not only that, but...

Bruce Wayne, not Batman, disarms Gordon, who's been a cop for at least 17 years with total ease! Are you f*cking serious, Bruce?

And then later on, Gordon saves Batman, then he tells him about the incident that Bruce referred to! And how Bruce Wayne misunderstood him and that he's not a corrupt cop!

It was so off topic! He could have mentioned any other instance for him being a good cop. He could have talked about something actually relevant. But no, he went completely off topic and brought up that specific instance.

I don't care about the continuity, I'm just gonna go ahead and assume that Gordon knew that Bruce Wayne is Batman.

Anyway, I still loved it, it was great.

Jesus Christ, how do you people do this?

I read The Dark Knight 3 #5 and Batman #2.

Now I gotta wait 2 weeks for the next Batman, and two months for the next TDK.

I read the entire Zero Year storyarc between releases.

Might as well kill some time.

What's all that stuff about, with Wally West appearing and the Flash remembering him and launching Rebirth or whatnot?

What series is that? Like... Gimme actual checkpoints. "This is where he starts appearing to people, and this is where Rebirth Rebirths"

I tried to look it up, but I really don't know how to phrase it correctly for Google, so I keep getting Rebirth #1 as a result. I want, like... The stuff before that.

I'm pretty sure with Rebirth, all you really need to know is that there is a pre-Flashpoint reality, and a post-Flaspoint reality. The "post-crisis" DC universe, and the New-52 DC universe. Although technically the current timeline is the New-52 universe, with Wally breaking through as well as the post-crisis Superman, things are changing. Rebirth isn't the end of a story, it's more of a beginning. So if you're confused, it's because the whole picture has yet to be shown.

I'm not sure which book Wally is going to be in, where his story is to be explained, I think Titans (not teen titans, that's the other Wally West from the New-52. Just Titans).

I'm really just reading "Batman" and "Superman" out of DC. I'm a big fan of Tomasi/Gleason as their work on Batman and Robin was great. Not sure about Batman without Snyder, so far.

Edit: as for waiting. You get used to it. You either wait a couple weeks for single issues, or you wait months for collected volumes. Either way you wait. It actually makes it easier to not read bad books, because it's easy to lose interest in a bad book when you have to wait.

Just broaden the list of books you read. That way every week you get a couple at least. DC has the right idea with these twice monthly rebirth schedule when it comes to Batman and Superman. One week the self titled books come out, and then the next week the side books come out, i.e. Detective Comics or Action Comics. So every week there's a new Batman or Superman book.
