controller problems

I am using a playstation dual shock controller with a USB adapter.

I configured the controller in the settings mode, and tested it. Everything works just fine. When I'm in the game I can use all of the controller buttons and they function just normally, EXCEPT I can't turn left or right with the analog stick.

 

Any ideas on how to fix this? I'd really like to be able to drive vehicles with a controller rather than mouse/keyboard (which work fine btw).
