Been playing around with the Vive, and it is really cool. The application I really want would be a virtual cinema of sorts. Put it on, feel like you're at the movies without the need to be at the movies. But that will require higher definition on the headsets, which is still a year or two away at least.

I think this time is the time for VR. The way it will evolve, though, will be probably different from what we expect. I can only imagine the sorts of games and apps we will have once it becomes more mainstream.

I think there is a cinema app for the GearVR. Dunno about one for the Vive, but you'd think they made it for that as well.

I use the Vive and Virtual Desktop does that (its on steam). there are a couple others I think but VD works very well and you can create your own environments if you're that way inclined and dont like theirs. I dont find the resolution isnt to bad either, its not like watching a bluray obviously but not much different from watching a film at the cinema. 3d films are really nice to watch on the vive through that app.

GTA V in VR:

Looks pretty buggy and maybe motion sickness inducing, but would be neat to try.

Now this is the kind of VR game I really wanna play:

They also showed another similar game at E3, but I forgot what it's called.

Picked up a Vive since my last visit to this thread. The tech has exceeded my expectations, but the current library is... meh? Which is a major problem, because I no longer feel like playing non-VR games, and I've played almost everything that looked to me like it's worth playing.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

Not A Nice Person

Something interesting for Kings fans (if they exist...)

http://thenextweb.com/insider/2016/06/20/sacramento-kings-new-stadium-to-have-vr-instant-replay/#gref

The Sacramento Kings are set to open a new $507 million stadium in October. Inside youll find screens that are nearly as long as the court itself (84 feet) as well as high-capacity Wi-Fi systems intended to provide blazing fast internet for all in attendance.

In addition to tweeting, snapping and providing the occasional status update, the Wi-Fi will provide fans with something new entirely: virtual reality replays of all the action. Now, no matter where youre sitting, you can don a VR headset and view 360-degree replays of the action as if you were sitting courtside, according to Paul Jacobs, vice chairman and co-owner of the team.

etc

- f*ck Oculus and their attempts at exclusivity, bribing developers to not support the Vive.

- PSVR will be absolutely awful

- Mobile VR is a completely different experience to standard desktop VR

A review from LinusTechTips about the Oculus is out. The verdict is that it is incomplete in comparison to the Vive.

Yeah the motion controllers as well as the room scale movement really make a big difference. Although once Oculus catches up and releases both then you could maybe say it's a superior product to the Vive(though we don't know what it'll cost) as the Vive is apparently a bit less comfortable to use and it doesn't have the headphones.

Also a lot of the HTC Vive games right now are kinda just cute proofs of concept. It'll be cool to eventually see Oculus publish some actual Triple A experiences for the Touch controllers. There really shouldn't be any exclusivity though. All of these devices need more games if we are hoping for VR to succeed.

I tried to do a livestream with VR, it was pretty jittery.
If I'm just recording VR, everything is fine.

I assume that would need a CPU upgrade and not a GPU upgrade?

I am bad at computers so I don't know.

If this does't happen within five years then, as a 90's kid, my entire life will be a lie.

Sega says it's going to make an officially supported VR version of Alien: Isolation.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/09/19/alien-isolation-vr-teased-by-sega

F*ck Yes, One of my favourites and a massively underrated game.I can't wait for that! played it in VR and it truly is terrifying was gutted when support for it was dropped due to oculus updates and not supporting it anymore. They really did miss a trick not keeping up with the support was so fun playing peekaboo round every corner then crying a little. Edited by OysterBarron

I really wish I had the money to get into VR Right now, to me it's one of the biggest things to come, not just in gaming but in stuff like sports and live events.

The problem is, to me the entry point for a Vive is about £2k (£800 headset, and then a PC capable of running it) and that's just too much for a toy. It's where the idea of a PS4 Pro and a PSVR make more sense, I bet the pair of them come to less than just the Vive

This isn't gaming related, but this social VR demo from Facebook was pretty neat:

Really shows the potential that this tech has.

I'm just bumping this, because I was wondering how your experience has been so far.

I have an opportunity to pick something up this holiday, but I'm not sure if I should or shouldn't drop my money on VR yet.

I've been playing games for so long that I remember the last three times VR has been the next big thing. And here we are, number 4. I think we're still 10 years away from it being to the standard it really needs to be, and at a price point where it's not completely exclusive to anyone other than the rich. For now, I expect it to do reasonably well, then disappear again. I don't see this being a mainstay for entertainment.

And let's face it, the primary use for like, 90% of people buying VR sets is watching VR porn, right?

Signatures are dumb anyway.

The PS VR isn't super expensive(well at least if you already own a PS4). I heard it's actually sold pretty well. Dunno if it's something people keep playing tho, we definitely need better games for these devices. Otherwise people will probably stop caring.

This game was pretty awesome even without VR:

Sadly it's only on the Oculus.

oh nice

Sadly it's only on the Oculus.

oh no

I was hoping that with VR we could do away with exclusivity since it's mostly on PC, but, well, Oculus/Facebook disagrees ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ at least revive is a thing, but ideally it wouldn't need to be a thing in the first place.

So I've been away from home a lot and I finally was able to set up my Vive. I only played around in SteamVR Home or whatever it's called, but HOLY sh*t was I impressed when I first put the headset on. Legit felt like I just entered into another world. The image quality was actually better than I expected. Yeah some text can be a bit hard to read and you can make out the pixels, but the resolution is high enough that it made me feel a lot more immersed than with some of the earlier headset prototypes I tried out in conventions a few years back. The controllers impressed me too, it was really cool to just flail them around and see how accurately they were represented in the virtual world. I didn't spend too much time with it, because I started to feel a bit motion sick from all the teleporting and I was generally just tired from setting up this thing almost the entire day(ran into some issues that I fortunately was able to resolve at least momentarily).

I am still a bit annoyed by the Rift discount and I do actually have the right to refund my Vive. However I've heard that a lot of people have had bad experiences with sending their Vive for warranty to be fixed and whatnot. Just getting a refund could be easier, but still I really don't feel like dealing with anymore hassle. I just wanna enjoy this thing now that I have it. I might change my mind before tuesday when my right to refund ends, but as of right now I'm thinking of keeping my Vive.

The new Oculus Go looks pretty handy... I have had a PSVR for a while now (the new VR mode for WipEout is so good) but like many others I find it kind of a hassle to set it up a lot of the time. I really would like a totally wireless stand alone device that seems so easy to use like this. I might look into buying one as a companion for non gaming related content. I am just not sure what the competitors are doing.

Facebook also just made a presentation about a new high end VR headset prototype as well as other general VR tech they've been working on:

The video title is in german I believe, but it's an english presentation. I don't know if I really wanna buy anything from Facebook, but it's nice to see them advance this technology nonetheless. Hopefully we'll start seeing some new SteamVR headsets in the near future too. Preferrably from some company other than HTC since they're kinda being a bag of c*nts with the pricing for the Vive Pro. 800$ for just the HMD is ridiculous when it's not even that big of an advancement. Samsung Odyssey I believe has roughly the same specs and it's like 500 and also comes with the Windows Mixed Reality controllers.
