Question about boat controls

When driving/sitting in a boat, is there any way to stand up or stop driving WITHOUT jumping off the boat like an idiot? On certain missions, when enemy boats start pursuing you, it would be nice to be able to stand up and take them out with a Combat MG, Minigun, RPG, etc instead of having to sit in the boat and manually aim your SMG or AP pistol at the attackers, but so far every time I've tried doing that it made my character jump out of the boat and get killed while defenseless in the water.

Treat it like a car your trying to leave the door open on, press triangle to exit drivers seat then use L3 to move character and break animation.

Excluding the Seashark because it's too small, I can usually press triangle and then change direction fast enough that I can override the "bail out" animation and be able to walk around the boat.

There isn't a button combination to simply stand up (that I'm aware of).

I find that if you come to a complete stop first, your character is less likely to jump out.

Some boats you seem to jump out of anyway no matter what, like the dingy.

Hit Y and immediately hit the left bumper button after the boat has come to a complete stop.
