How fast is your internet?

6mb/s down, 1.5mb/s up.

Does the game use more than 200 or 300 Mb in an hour? Not sure it does.

Invite only - <200Mb/hr

Public session (especially if you end up as host) - 1-3Gb/hr. Rly.

In XB1 you can view bandwidth used in Settings.

Speed through wifi as I'm on my laptop, but it's obviously faster with the wired connection.

I still lag a ton because almost all the people I play with are in Europe or US.

How does it determine who is the host?

Ok, thanks. Can vary quite a bit. Lots of voice chat add also, I guess.

I'd assume best connectivity to other players when the current host leaves, but equally could be random. I don't know enough about that kind of thing.

AFAIK there are command'n'control servers Rockstar's side (but the actual sessions are P2P), so probably they sort it out.

How fast is your internet you use to play gta online?

Mine is:

6BhkIrg.png

I get placed into 20-30 player lobbies all the time, and i hardly ever disconnect or have errors. Downloading a game takes days though...

I suspect gta online doesn't take much data or speed when actually running.

So, what's your speed & ping time? What type of experience do you have playing on it?

Mine isn't too bad. Download speed is usually around 2.6Mbps, but the upload speed is just about like yours. If you have a slow upload speed, that makes uploading videos to YouTube just a bundle of fun. Like you said, I don't really have any problems playing GTA Online or any of my other games so I'm happy. Unfortunately, you have to have a pretty good speed if you ever want to use 'SharePlay' on PS4.

It's the same pretty much all the time. But despite a fast connection, I still lag because the idiotic matchmaking in GTAO puts me into Brazilian lobbies.

College. Depending how many people skip classes, that's how good/bad it is.

Mine is 100mbps down, 50mbps up fiber op, but even with a wired connection my PS4 console only maxes out around 40mbps down. Network card limitations in the console I guess, but still more than plenty to play full lobbies lag free.

Guys I'm a noob. When we play online it's the download speed that matter, right? I think I'm around 10Mb/s.

Upload speed is just as important because your console needs to send back information at the same time. The ping time matters also.

In before the super clever "lol nice McDonald's connection" twats.

3mbps down, 1mbps up. Very rarely do I disconnect, slightly laggy in dense areas with a lot of people.

55 down 6 up. PS4 BT Fibre

Few questions on the subject....

What is Ping?

Any idea how much data the game actually uses?

When folk talk about Rockstar's servers, what is the issue? I thought the game only really connects to them at the start / end of a job, when you buy stuff, register player kills etc? Basically whenever you get the spinning thing in the corner of your screen?

So for example, if I'm just mucking around in freeroam in an invite only session is there any data actually going between my console and R*?

If a friend joins my session I assumed the data went between our consoles? Does it do that via R*?

When I'm in the clouds is that my console trying to connect to R* or to other consoles?

Thanks in advance.

Ping is the time it takes for the data to get to the server, and back to you. Most games require a ping of less than 80

Any idea how much data the game actually uses?

rough guess of 5 to 10mbs per hour.

When folk talk about Rockstar's servers, what is the issue? I thought the game only really connects to them at the start / end of a job, when you buy stuff, register player kills etc? Basically whenever you get the spinning thing in the corner of your screen?

rockstar servers act like the glue. They put things together and store the data, whilst gameplay is run on the player side

So for example, if I'm just mucking around in freeroam in an invite only session is there any data actually going between my console and R*?

Yes, they keep track of the stats, so that data would be sent

If a friend joins my session I assumed the data went between our consoles? Does it do that via R*?

It goes to both

When I'm in the clouds is that my console trying to connect to R* or to other consoles?

Thanks in advance.

both

Edit: when it actually works.

How do some have almost even download and upload speeds? Do I need to do something different?

thats up to the internet provider.

as far as i know only a handful of companies offer equal download/upload speed.

Thank you. So after reading this thread it appears that I don't have a great internet connection, but certainly is far from the worst. I was worried that I might be causing a lot of lag. Am I right in assuming mine is decent enough not to cause those issues?

Amy thank you this thread.

I usually get about 15/16 down and 2-3 up.

My system is connected by wifi (no choice) but not has really been much of an issue. At night though I think every single person in the neighborhood starts watching Netflix or streamed porn on every screen or something because it can drop to as low as 3mbs down.

Considering I live out in the boonies, we got Fibre about a year ago and it definetly improved things. Everything is connected via Wi-Fi

jbx5ubE.png

Never get any lag issues, very very very rarely get a full lobby disconnect.
