Underclocking my graphics card fixed the problem for me. There are instructions somewhere on the boards here but the gist is to download a tool called Nvidia Inspector, activate the overclocking UI and lower the two clock offsets. Other posts say to reduce by -20 each, but I had to reduce my memory offset by a lot more (200) to get a stable run. Fortunately the underclock had no effect on frame rate for me.

Edit: Sorry, I just saw you're using an AMD card. There's probably an equivalent tool to underclock your brand of card other than Nvidia Inspector. It's worth a try, at least.

I used Evga precision to change my gpu settings.

I had this problem for 5 weeks since initial install. I could play for a max of an hour at best and then I would get the same error code. Underclocking my stock base clock by -75 to get a base clock of 1075 on my gtx680 resolved it for me. not crashed once in the last week.

Well I said underclock not overclock. The D3d error for as long as I was dealing with it(for about 1 year) was a pain to deal with. For me it wasn't GTA V that was the problem, it was the "TDR error" in windows that would cause the D3d error in GTA. There are a lot of solutions if you search up "tdr error gta v" in google. The underclocking solution was the one that worked for me. Hope you find something that works.

740m suggests you're running a laptop?

I know there are some that have managed it but laptops aren't exactly built for high end gaming.

My suggestions would be :-

Graphics settings all set to their minimum values.

Third party overclocking software completely turned off.

Fraps or any other third party software turned off.

Nvidia Experience - Completely uninstall it - it's terrible. (this worked for me on my err_gfx_d3d problem)

All of these are worth a try because they have been the main cause of your problem and everybody else's. The internet is littered with the same solutions.

Hope this info helps.

Last try - all of the above plus running in DX10

Most effective way is heading to your Documents folder -> Rockstar Games -> GTA V -> settings (XML file) Open with notepad, change <DX_Version value="2" /> to 0

Close and Save

1 might work but go for 0

Thats about as much help I can give you.
