The Dark Tower

The Man in Black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed...

I'm super excited to see this actually happen. I hope they do it justice, with this casting news so far it seems they are on the right track.

I'll admit I haven't read half the books in the series.

the first 3 if I remember correctly. and some of the prequel comics.

still, pretty stoked for this.

Dark Tower is basically Stephen Kings magnum-opus.

More casting news, Eddie Dean younger brother of the Sage and Eminent Junkie Henry Dean, has been found in my favorite junkie, Aaron Paul.

I've been retweeted by Jim Gaffigan and Patton Oswalt.

so that was cool.

Okay, I'm gonna sound really ignorant here.

Isn't Dark Tower the book where Stephen King just imports his other characters (And one from Harry Potter) into one big adventure?

I think I'd like that... But I feel a weird obligation to read all of Stephen King's other books to get to know these people.

No, not really. He uses elements from other books, and a simple idea, the sneetch, from HP, but pre requisite knowledge is not neeeded at all.

yeah IDredMan you basically got it backwards.

Dark Tower is where a lot of Stephen King's concepts and characters come from.

and from Dark Tower, they've made sort of thematic or 'cameo' appearances in his other novels since then. it doesn't necessarily mean the universes overlap but the themes and aesthetics from Tower bleed over and spill into other books, influencing other characters in different times/places.

it's weird

but Alien is right you don't have to know anything about this crap to enjoy the story.

Sounds good.

I'll definitely try to read at least some of it.

The last 3 books I tried to read all made me wanna kill myself and never finished them, so I'm a little burned out now.

Start at book 2. The argument portion catches you up all you need. Book one can be hard to start on.

Not sure what to think about the casting. I'm sure Idris Elba can pull of the character of Roland, but he's clearly not what Roland was described as, which is a white, Clint Eastwood-looking fella with cold blue eyes. As for Matthew... Not really who I pictured as the man in black. We'll see if he can do it. Aaron Paul as Eddie seems perfect, though. We know he can do humor and being a drug addict from Breaking Bad. That New York accent better be thick af, tho.

The Dark Tower: Author Stephen King Says Movie Not a Straight Adaptation
Share.
"[it] may upset some of the fans a little bit", said King.

By Lucy O'Brien Author Stephen King has said Director Nikolaj Arcel's first Dark Tower film won't be entirely in step with his sprawling book series.

In a podcast with EW, King said that the film won't be a straight adaptation of his novels, but believes fans will get behind it nonetheless.

"[The movie] starts sort of in medias res", said King, "in the middle of the story instead of at the beginning, which may upset some of the fans a little bit. But they will get behind it, because it is the story."

Arcel's movie is the first in what will be several films based on King's seven-book series. It recently begun filming with Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey as the gunslinger (Roland Deschain) and the man in black (Walter Padick), respectively.

"The thing is, it's been a long trip from the books to the film," King said about The Dark Tower as it entered production. "I'm delighted, and I'm a little bit surprised."

They can fill that gap with something else, I don't think the racial tension was a major plot element.

yeah I'm glad we have a date.

it was originally scheduled for Feb or March.

the production of this film has been plagued a little by reshoots, but it seems to have come together well. I know there's probably a lot of people who don't actually know much about Dark Tower because it's a little bit before their time... and because nobody reads books anymore. it's a pretty badass series though.

I've had the Gunslinger sitting on my bookshelf for a couple months. I should probably start reading it.

Mister Pink

There seems to be a huge resurgence in western themed or full-on westerns lately with Westworld, Slow West, Bone Tomahawk, Hell Or High Water, The Revanant. I'm really enjoying it.. I know this has only slight western elements but it was just something I was thinking about last night.

Looks good.

Ok, here it is, the trailer.

Guys... I've got a bad feeling about this. They talk about the purpose of the Tower in the trailer itself?? Mid-world has multiple moons??? Wow....

Wow.

source material be damned

the visuals look really good, tbh.

I'll give it a fair shake. Idris Elba is one of my favorite actors working today regardless of the role.

I'll give it fair shake too, and I'm prepared for many many changes... but I really feel like the description of the tower (something that is really... never made explicitly clear) is a warning sign.

f*ck. Saw there was a trailer and started reading the book immediately. Spent half an hour reading Stephen King's foreword.

I hate long forewords. Nothing more egotistical than an author who writes a twenty page foreword on top of a twenty page introduction. But I guess he's earned it.

I only got through the first chapter before starting to doze off (it was late at night, not because of the book itself).
