It was always popular.

This. You can roleplay as many different things. A millionaire mercenary as I do.

Plus there is 1000 things to do.

And #1 in my book. Open world improvised combat.

Why do some of you miserable f*cks even play the game if all you do is complain how sh*tty it is?

seems like a huge turn around happened

when gta online first launched, many people were upset with it, it didn't work properly for like the first 3 months. and many people wished that rockstar went with the gta 4 online model

but now its this huge success, with many people playing

so what exactly happened on the way

Can you link your information source, please? I'd be very interested to see the figures.

Oh, this is an easy one. In real life we have to sit here and wait for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton to be our next president. In GTA life we can take out our frustrations on pedestrians, store clerks, cops and each other until we feel satiated.

The name Grand Theft Auto. You make a load of brilliant games under that name, and people will assume the next one will be as well.

But that name is getting dragged through the mud a little (in my opinion); they need to get things back on track.

Other than the name, there is that it's a pretty unique game, and there aren't that many others that allow you as much freedom. Also, a lot of people were very happy to see the return of over the top military vehicles, as opposed to GTA IV's attempts at being gritty and serious.

Just blows my mind... "I went to the doctor and told him it hurts when I do this, he said don't do that."

It's like they have severe IBS and all they eat is Indian food and deviled eggs.

In fairness there's no way that anyone can seriously say this game isn't broken. It's just fortunate for all of us, Rockstar and the players, that the things that do work are so damn good. Being blinkered to the faults, though, is just plain stupid. (Not aiming that at you - just at anyone who says there's nothing wrong with it).

Sales indicate you would be very wrong. V sold far more than IV which some more than the previous gen games.

GTA V is still to this day consistently near the top of Steam's top 10 games in sales, in fact right now it's number eight. That is selling for 59.99, the same price it was released for well over a year ago. How many games can do that and still sell?

GTA V is far and away the more popular online that IV was, with 8 million unique weekly users at the last companies earnings call announcement.

Despite some folks personal preferences each game in the franchise (TBoGT and TLaD nonwithstanding) is far stronger in sales than the previous.

It's the replay value of it. It's a free roam world of its own kind right now. No other online game I can think comes close to it.

Probably because it's good fun to a lot of people, myself included?

Of course it's selling well. It's GTA.

But if the next game along has as many problems, flaws, bugs, etc. Then I can see the series getting hurt by that.

Hopefully it doesn't anyway.

GTA Online amazes me because its the only game I criticise for its horrible design flaws and say on many times "Oh I hate it", or "Oh, shut up its sh*te", but its the only game i've kept going back to for 3 years now.

When they moved to NG/PC, they've started actually doing things with content, like Heists, Lowriders and Executives. These updates have been really good for all types of player. Those who want new cars, got new cars. Those who wanted new missions, got new missions and those who wanted new clothing got new clothing. Rockstar has been really productive with their content packs as of late and hopefully it can keep going on like this.

Although, when I first played GTAO on Ps3, I'd never have thought that my character that was made on the 1st of October would've survived all the server problems and still be playing near every day for 3 years. Lets go for another 3!

Edit: Its a fun game in short. With the sudden step up in modder removal, that has also restarted a golden-age of GTA O for me and my friends.

Understood but I meant how people say the updates are sh*tty, the new cars are sh*tty, the new modes are sh*tty, etc. but still play or at least still come here. Not on a technical side of how "sh*tty" the game is, just to clarify. I'm no genius but if I don't like something, I don't bother with it.

They think they can fix THEIR issues with the game by coming on here and whining about it.

Never happens.

Yeah, but that's a different thing. I do agree with you though. Other than the free roam events I've not really got much from any update, ever, other than bug fixes (which were usually introduced in the previous update), but I still play the game on a nearly daily basis, despite the fact that a lot of bugs and other bad programming and/or implementation spoil some facets of the game for me. It's so versatile a game that we could all be doing completely different things and still never have done everything it has to offer. Lots of people don't see it like that though, so they complain about the 1 thing they do being broken, rather than be glad that there's hundreds of other things they could do instead.

I think what I'm trying to say is, a lot of people are plain f*cking dumb. I think that sums it up.

I do get bored of it every now and then but I always come back for more because there isn't anything else that fills that hole.

That's what she uttered.

Others please chime in if this isn't right, but this feels like the best DLC supported online game ever (in terms of quantity). That helps promote longevity by keeping players playing and bringing others back.

I think its popular because you can get good at something in it.

You suck at driving games, but are an excellent sniper? No problem, you can be the best highway sniper ever.

You suck at parachuting? No problem, you can become the best stunt pilot instead.

You suck at shooting? No problem. You can become the best supercar racer instead.

And if you are good at little bit of everything in the game...it's no wonder you are still playing and actually get upset when the R* servers are down.

That's how I know I'm still interested....when servers are down and I'm like aww man, gotta play Madden or visit the magical land of Faplandia.

Most other games you play till you get to the end credits. This game doesn't have an ending, which makes it an endless sandbox. They should have locked more stuff at higher levels though with at least rank 1,000 being the last unlock, unlike it currently being rank 120. I only see myself playing till rank 1,000 and by then Ill be ready for GTA 6 which I hope the graphics will be much more stunning like the campaign games today are.

Theres some cool pads/ houses/ buildings in Black Ops 3, the glass house in Battlefield Hardlne and the scenic drives in Need For Speed Rivals, hints at what Rockstar can aspire too, graphics wise. Currently GTA 5 is cartoony looking which is my only complaint and the struggle of the servers getting friends together.

Because they have tried other games and know that nothing else really compares. GTA has become a victim of it's own success.

I root around in the squalor that has become my home then open the windows and scream to anyone that can hear that I am sick of the filth and such. But your approach seems much more sensible.
