seems like a huge turn around happened

when gta online first launched, many people were upset with it, it didn't work properly for like the first 3 months. and many people wished that rockstar went with the gta 4 online model

but now its this huge success, with many people playing

so what exactly happened on the way

i think it didn't work at first because so many people were trying to get online all at the same time

Is this The Guy?

Well for one characters were saving, which they didn't at first. Cant remember how many characters I lost when online started.

Then I just kept playing, and playing, and playing.

Tons of new content and updates.

It's the greatest online multi player of all time.

I guess by adding new missions, jobs, vehicles, clothes, weapons & many other things along the way has helped keep people playing.

Death Rains From Above

The ability to pretty much do whatever the hell we want in a pretty big, detailed sandbox of a world. That's why people come back to it.

Want to get into firefights/wars with other people? Want to go stunting off a mountain or canyon? Want to build a car collection? Want to roleplay? Want to cruise around the map while blasting the radio? Want to blow sh*t up? Want to just mess around with your friends and crew?

This game pretty much has it all. Best part about it is that content is STILL being added to an already huge Online experience.

No other game has captured my attention as GTAO has. I have other games that I'd like to play more of, like Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3, yet I still find myself plopping the GTAV disc back into the console.

Battlefield 4 syndrome.

The launch was awful and it lacked plenty of content as well as having some glaring issues, but after two years, the game is great and a bargain for the price at which it is.

It's been a huge success from the beginning. Sure there were some issues with player saves and what not at launch but part of that was because of the sheer number of people trying to play at once.

A better question is why has it been so popular for so long

The freedom. There aren't many multiplayer games out there that allow you to express yourself in the same way GTA can. With this one, you have plenty of choices on what to do.

  • Want to go flying around with buddies around or inside the city, even around the countryside? Grab a plane at the airport and knock yourself out.
  • With our cellphones and the R* Editor, people that love shooting photos and making videos can have a good time. There are games with better graphics, I know this, but Los Santos and Blaine County do have some amazing views and despite the map lacking in any diversity in the north, the environment still looks very impressive.
  • Rob some banks and make huge money? Start a heist.
  • Go on a long drive? There's a long "interstate" network that surrounds the island.
  • Have car meets with your friends or your crew? Just drive to a local spot with lots of space. The car customization, especially after recent updates, really does allow for some diverse meets.
  • Just wreck havoc or troll other players? Get your guns/explosives or those Pegasus vehicles of yours and blast away. The only repercussion is paying insurance on their cars and lots of hatemail. :p

Ever since launch, GTAO has come a long way, and despite its setbacks and the game still having glitches here and there (which at this point, the game does feel very ironed out), I always find myself going back to GTA for a little mayhem despite the amount of games that came out since it launched.

OP, why do you think that GTA0 is a huge success now, compared to the beginning? Matchmaking, joining, wasting time in clouds, are worse than ever. Everybody's bored with the stale content. The early waves of players are mostly gone. Where did you hear about this huge new success?

Now I can't wait to play some GTA Online on my next two days off, haven't played since last week.

35 years old here, PS4, tried literally over $400 IN GAMES THE PAST YEAR, yet GTA 5/Online is the only game I play.

I wish there was more games like this that were designed to be simply "online only" games built from the ground up for ONLINE ONLY.

Fun as hell is how I can describe GTA Online.

Matchmaking, joining, wasting time in clouds, are worse than ever.

That's more on the sheer amount of jobs in the game. Right now, there's almost 600 things to do in this game: races (165 total)*, missions (91), adversary modes (I think 82 now?), deathmatches (82 total)*, captures (31 total)*, and LTS (40 total)* (*including R* Verified), and that's not even including the stupid number of user-generated content that people always send invites to. Too many things to do means spreading the population too thin.

GTA IV did it right by not including such a substantial amount of races, deathmatches, and whatever mode there was. The number of jobs in this game is a perfect example of quantity-over-quality, because most of them are really forgettable.

The free content and double rp events have been a massive winner for me. Add to that heists and the great vehicles released keep me coming back for more.

Im still not loving it because so many flaws. It is a great game with lots of new good features but I still miss the simple things about about GTA IV.

Spawns could be set to Near, Medium or Far.

Crouching

Cops was not as many/agressive or could even be set to Off

AI aim not as disturbing.

Friendly fire On/Off sessions (not passive in same session)

Not as many bugs, errors and connection issues

Armoured vest not as lame.

medikit pickups instead of inventory snacks

You die you lose guns

You cant carry all weapons at once

You have more use for all guns even the glock pistol

You have more use of any type of vehicle you can find

No car armour or bulletproof tires

Helis are more easy aiming

Game more balanced even after APC introduced and Annihalator with explosive rounds its not what jets are to V

Better explosion damage

There was nothing wrong with GTA: O at the start. People have to understand that there are no servers in the world that can handle 30m+ users trying to create accounts at the same time.

It's still a success because it's GTA. It's very good for the PC market because now Rockstar know PC gamers are serious, 4.1m Steam sales alone, so we can hope for a nice new RDR in true 1080p, 60FPS :)

This is very misleading. I understand your opinion but; flip it round the other way and there is a list of hundreds of points that GTA IV does not have compared. You can't call having snacks instead of medkits a flaw.

GTA has never gone backwards, imagine how amazing GTA 6 will be especially if they make it entirely on New Gen systems as well as listening to player feedback

it's just a great well rounded game, with many branches...you have run and gunners, roleplayers, modders, photographers etc They have the most content and most freedom, they blend fun gameplay and realism very well

Because it's an open world Call of Duty and Battlefield being called as GTA, the Grand Trade Auto.

I think all the updates and free DLCs make a big difference. Since release, not only R* allowed players to continue their progress on a enhanced, new gen version of the game, and with tons of new released content and activities to do.

Customization, huge and detailed open world, people's greed (fantasy big money making), free DLCs, etc. The matchmaking with user content is... uhh... almost "great". If only Halo 5 were to have something similar.

It's #1 top rated on the Xbox One store.

I see that it's #1 in All Time Average Rating and it's third in Most Popular, but that represents the overall accumulated sales over the past 2.5 years, not some resurgent popularity. In Best Selling This Week, GTAV is more than halfway down on the second page. So I'd say that GTAV has had its day and it's on its way down.

VIP work saved it in for me in the end, but the clock is ticking on that now! needs expanding with new VIP work and to increase organisation sizes or an option to have CREW and do CREW Work.

I can now 'own' cars of which I'll never have even one IRL... No, IRL, I drive an 'exciting' family car and sadly GTA online hasn't improved that dull experience at all... :-)

Why the success for GTA online? One word: Diversity...

And say what you want about Rockstar... But they do care about their customers and keep on creating awesome content... Also glad they pretty much took care of modders gone wild, who really destroyed the awesome freemode experience...

And Shark cards bad? To me an investment in a company which gives back and which gives me personally lots of fun/ entertainment... And I had the opportunity to kill off the last remaining prehistoric shark and ended up with a superb boat... That sounds like a great deal to me... :-)
