I'm an old soul. The dresses are a little bit toooo gimmicky for my taste though, if they toned it down I would wear them more. Especially when there's no hair that goes with those dresses, what's the point in shoving them into the game if you don't have proper shoulder length hair or an updo to support it with.

 

Speaking of 1950's . . . if I could dress like elizabeth from Bioshock, that'd be nice ))

That's exactly the problem. I'll point to saints row again, In which you could dress who you wanted to dress like. There was grunge, uptown fashion, gangster you named it, If you wanted to dress vintage, you could. There was something for everyone, in Online, a supposed MMO, is very niche. All we seem to get is more combat, and hyper cars.

 

 

Yup. Said it before, but for all Saints Row leaned ever more wacky and outlandish as the series progressed, with things like superhero outfits, novelty mascot costumes, fetish wear, you name it, there was still a lot more room for realistic, everyday customisation, too.

 

Says a lot that even with the option to dress up in Jedi robes or something out of Minecraft, I was still able to have my version of 'the Boss' look like this:

 

 

 

GTAO, meanwhile? Enjoy those low-crotch trousers and umpteen new prints on the same basic t-shirt... And while we almost never update the barbershop options, how about 12 more tattoos, eh?

 

 

 

What also upsets me, is the fact that just because "it sells" we see these things 24/7 without catering to a "Big tent" audience. The past couple months have only catered to one niche rather than all niches.

 

In terms of niches, it doesn't necessarily "hurt" the community because the community itself is diverse with its overall tastes.

 

Not only that, but if they're mainly going off what's popular from each update, that's going to wind up with only more doubling-down on the same old same-old.

 

Think about it: if R* only ever does crappy-looking clothes with cheap prints, and hypercar/gimmick vehicle after hypercar/gimmick vehicle, and because that's all there is, that's all people buy, R*'s takeaway will inevitably be "boy, people sure love buying crappy clothes and expensive gimmicky cars - let's put in more of those, then!".

 

Well, yeah, they sell - because if you only put in one type of thing at a time, that's all people will be able to buy from that update! And the same goes for stuff you DON'T add - if the only metric you track is 'what's selling in-game', you'll never be able to gauge demand for things like 'everyday cars' or 'high street clothing', because you've not put enough (or any) of that in the game to begin with for people to buy!

 

 

In short, it's a vicious circle: R* adds certain things, neglects others - the only things that get bought are the things they add - R* adds more of the same to meet demand. And all the while, R* will never even know if there's demand for other things, because they've never given them a shot in the first place.

 

 

Reminds me of the whole thing with 'extra-chunky pasta sauce' from this classic from Jim Sterling - it's on broader sales trends, but the underlying principle is the same. Well worth a watch:

People should stop complaining about people that want clothes. Having a better variety of clothing choices would not affect the game one bit. More clothes is a positive. It's not a negative.

 

I welcome those that wanted a bikers update even though I'm not a fan of bikers.

 

It doesn't hurt to add more things.

 

Clothes is not too much to ask for.

Bit of a tangent, but since probably the best place for a decent 'fashionable clothing and cool cars' update would be a 'Nightlife Update' or something, I really think R* could do a lot worse than take cues from The Ballad of Gay Tony, in the same way that Bikers is basically 'The Lost and Damned: The Update'.

There's a fair amount of cool outfits in that, and ...hey, maybe they could finally get Bahama Mamas West opened... Having played a fair bit of TBoGT recently, I reckon something like the 'Bus Stop' dancefloor minigame would be neat - particularly if they did a multiplayer version of it, where it's not so much 'make as few mistakes as possible, or else you fail' as it is 'compete with your friends to see who can dance the best!':

Okay, so...

The dude in the green is totally rocking that short buzz cut fade that I'm not sure it already exists, in-game. So we know new hairstyles are coming.

 

Here we have a truck with a lady driver and apparently that's a new haircut, cause I don't remember seeing it in-game.

 

Yep, it's anew haircut. Looks dope

 

and this is definitely a female character talking to Agent 14. Just can't figure out if it's the existing ponytail or a new one.

Do we need MORE pointless clothing in GTA?

That's just your opinion. Besides, do we need anything? Do we need to live? Does anything need to exist? What kind of logic is that?

 

On the discrimination thing - I don't think it's about discrimination; just laziness, incompetence, etc.

 

Oh, and even if women did have the same amount of clothing as men (which I can't personally vouch for) - meh, women should have a sh*t-ton more clothing than men. For women to have no more clothes than men, that's pretty weak actually.

 

It's like those guys who say "Well, a Savage is more or less as powerful as someone on foot". The Savage isn't someone on foot; it's supposed to be stronger. Similarly, women aren't men - they need more clothes.

Saw a few things in the screenshots, bit like --V--'s analysis above - here's what I've noticed:

 

#1: Yeah, that's a new hairdo - another 'pudding-bowl' cut like we got with Bikers. Maybe there'll be a couple of other new styles, too - R* does tend to add around 3, in the rare occasions they add any new styles at all.

Also, looks like a fair amount of the clothes (aside from the new camo jackets/shirts) are palette-swaps of things like the biker jackets/vests - for example, the character driving the Sadler has one of the BMX-style vests, now in camo print:

 

 

 

#2: New colours of tactical gloves - and it's a bit worrying that they look cleaner/crisper than the jackets. I suspect those camo prints are going to look compressed (yet again...) when we see them in-game...

 

New colours of shades, too - and that hairdo on the guy in the middle is definitely new, so it does at least seem we'll be getting some new 'dos (although if they anything like the ones added with Bikers, I'm not getting my hopes up...):

 

 

 

 

 

#3: Looks like a female character on the right, and ...eh, I know that these kinds of clothes are supposed to be a bit baggier/bulkier than regular clothes, but still, I suspect it's the same problem we've been seeing since Lowriders back in 2015. Not sure if that's a new hairstyle - looks like a different style of bob...

 

 

 

 

 

#4: ...yep, this jacket (and a similar one worn by the guy on the rocket bike) are very likely recoloured versions of the Bikers jackets - likewise, the guy in the buggy is wearing a camo reskin of the Bikers denim vest.

 

As for the hairdo, it's sorta like the existing ponytail, but some of the details aren't quite the same. Doesn't help that it's the 'flatter' variant that R* uses to fit under hats - I've not used the regular ponytail since R* f***ed it up with Lowriders, so I can't really tell if it's just the 'updated' version of the flatter ponytail, or if it's actually a new style. Again, there's definitely new hairstyles coming, and R* tends to add a handful at once, so maybe...

Too much to hope for a new 'tidy, practical' ponytail variant, a bit like this one from MGSV?

Actually, not quite - the one that came with Lowriders: Custom Classics was a 'rolled quiff', while the one from the High Life promo pic is more of a pompadour-ish 'do.

But yeah - in any case, I'm personally going back to my original assessment that Gunrunning is very much going to be a 'look for the silver lining' kind of affair. Not just for the clothes/hairstyles, either - right now, I'm holding out for the inevitable drip-fed cars do include something fun...

To be fair, that's what I said a while back - I suspect R*'s been working on this update for long enough that much of the details were already a done deal by the time the Kotaku article happened. IMO, best to take note of anything R* gets wrong with this one, send feedback accordingly, and be more hopeful that the article had an effect on the next update. Roll on September/October, eh?
