Dear r* (regarding overall female clothing choices)

Recommended Posts

Commander S

At this rate, this update consists of one car I can't drive in Forza (Corsa C/Asbo) and one that I can (EK9 Civic/Kanjo), so ...welp. :turn:

It's clear that the GTAO team doesn't give a s*** about this aspect of the game at all, particularly where it concerns female characters (which has some pretty garbage implications, doesn't it?). They've actually added proper racing cars (and a new mode for them!) this update, plus a lot of outfits and vehicles for the role-play crowd (you can own a firetruck and firefighter outfit, for example), but 'normal clothes/hairstyles for women' is still right at the bottom of the priorities list, after all these years.

It's definitely way past 'oversight' territory, now - they know, but they don't care, despite so many other games getting just how important and popular character personalisation is for players (there's a reason why "Fashion Hunter" and "Fashion Souls" are things, after all!). I've not got high hopes for RDO tomorrow, either - but GTAO is just so uniquely bad at this, and it really doesn't bode well for future incarnations of the game, let alone future updates for this incarnation.

As much as a slap in the face as this update was for clothing, I decided to at least remake some of my heist gear from back in the day with the new stuff.

It isn't even compatible.

Compatibility hasn't been updated for any of the old vests or anything like that to fit with the new tactical attire, despite those options being part of the premade outfits available from the outfit menu.

Most of the new hats are also outright missing textures and patterns for female characters, leaving them as solid, blank colours.

They have to have intentionally gotten it this wrong at this point.

Yeah it's as bad as it could be, and about what I expected.

All reskinned bullsh*t, nothing original besides awful tacticool crap.

Nail polish would be so f*cking easy to add too.

Christ, we can only hope for good clothing when they run out of business ideas and have to have a clothes store be their next "nerve center" or whatever.

Then we got like a good 20% chance at getting something decent.

f*ck me, I don't really know what else to say than just incomprehensible swearing at this point.

R* - "Hey, wanna look like a soundcloud rapper with tons of face tats? We got you covered!"

Community - "Actually just some new hairstyles and well modeled clothing would be great..."

R* - "What's that? I'm a little deaf in this ear, did you say you wanted more military clothing? Well its your lucky day then!"

RIP.

Upon entering in the Arcade, I was extremely annoyed to meet this new female NPC having cool a outfit we cannot even reproduce. Hell, even a fix on the numerous hats and beanies (that have been having a big gap/floating for 4 years now) would do wonders.

It is possible that Rockstar is being careful when adding female clothing to the game. Remember that commercial where the husband got his wife a workout machine? Looks really innocent, right? No! There was a lot of blow back because people turned it into something it wasn't. Everyone said the husband was calling his wife fat, when she clearly wasn't. It's possible that Rockstar is just staying away for the whole female thing, because they don't want to create more noise. Just a thought...

If they were that concerned they wouldn't have added female characters. That debunks that theory.

The game was developed in 2008 and released in 2013. It's now almost 2020. Social media has poison our minds and body image. We complain about more stuff now than we did back in those days.

I guess the concensus is that the new clothes suck, right? By the way, what do you guys think of Rockstar straight up ripping off mods? Because I could swear some of the "new" clothes have been around for a while in certain mods. Not that I would blame them, some of those mods are great.

By the btw, did you know there are "hidden" clothes in the vanilla files? I was browsing around the heist clothes and found these:

jSCqp4i.png

eq44Utt.png

These are in the original files, but menus never make them appear and from what I understand some files are overwritten to be loaded instead of those. Don't know if that's known to everyone but I really dig that second helmet.

Yup - the "Maxwell Asbo":

Spoiler

Available now, with plenty of mod options, and costing around $400k (which is pretty reasonable by modern GTAO standards...). If nothing else, this update might just be the best one overall for more 'everyday' cars (and it only took six years! :turn:).

On the whole, yeah - not helped by being a bunch of boring 'tacticool' stuff and reskins/palette-swaps, yet again... :rol:

I finally got around to checking out the full selection on both of my characters, and it's really noticeable how much better things are for male characters - you've got heist outfits that, while largely pseudo-military tryhard fodder, at least look like cohesive outfits, if that's your thing. Meanwhile, female characters get rough approximations using equivalent items - so that either means tottering around in high heels while wearing night-vision goggles, or just wearing some bigger dude's wardrobe.

I'd say that R*'s at least doing a bit better in RDO, but not really, either - you've got a whole lot of asset recycling going on (it's a bit sad when the biggest draws of each outlaw pass are the all-in-one outfits taken straight from single-player characters), as well as stuff that clearly looks based on modern-day retro costume apparel, rather than anything period-appropriate

That, and it's not really encouraging to see two age-old problems from GTAO getting replicated in RDO: tops/bottoms that should go together, but the colours don't match, and items being added in such a way that looks unrealistic, because you either can't layer them with appropriate pieces, or because they're only usable with certain items, when you should be able to mix-and-match things more. :sigh:

I want a metallic strappy dress with a low cut draped front for my female character. And a nice rack to go with it.

Seriously, what this game needs in a plastic surgeon's office.

Pretty much - I've taken one last stab at getting the 'weird hairline texture glitch' fixed, but at best, things like the Casino dresses (which are okay, but not without issues!) were a tiny step in the right direction after far too long, and then got followed up with more of the same old same-old with the Casino Heist DLC.

And if RDO is anything to go by, I don't think they've listened/learned at all - RDO started with a decent-ish selection of clothing/hairstyles (many of which were recycled assets from single-player, like with launch-era GTAO outfit pieces), but with Frontier Pursuits (the first actual update), they've jumped straight ahead to the same problems as GTAO: all-in-one gimmick outfits with preset colours and no customisation utility, and then a bunch of garish-coloured reskins of older items. That, and the same kind of emphasis on unisex shared assets as GTAO since late 2015 - especially with the "Outlaw Pass" stuff, where the items have to be shared by both male and female characters, which automatically rules out anything like skirts and dresses (because I don't see R* doing the Saints Row thing any time soon - more's the pity! :p).

R* have spoken, and it's a resounding "pfft" and a dismissive shrug. Which, to be fair, after squandering the potential of GTAO, and the increasingly stodgy, formulaic approach of their single-player games (it's been really something to go back and read old articles on GTA IV, and see the same kinds of criticisms as people had of RDR2), is about all I can muster for the idea of GTA VI or 'GTAO 2' (or RDR3, or Bully 2, or Agent, or...). Besides, Saints Row 5 is in development, and there's even rumours of a Saints Row the Third remaster this May (!!) - why bother getting my hopes up that R* will inexplicably change direction overnight, when there are other games on the horizon that'll do even more of what I want as part of the core design - ?

I will admit that I am finding it a bit depressing that there aren't clothing options that I thought would be basics (thinking about tights, there being only one option, which can only be worn with jean shorts...)

I spend a fair bit of time in the clothing shops and am fairly disappointed that there aren't really many options that look anything like what my friends wear (full black flats, open toe heels with less straps, a proper black tank top, etc...)

I hear you on the nail polish front, given that quite a few NPCs have it (Agatha Baker, Paige Harris and the prostitutes of Los Santos come to mind...)

I hate comparisons, but Saints Row The Third released in 2011 and while definitely not perfect, the clothing/ makeup selection feels altogether more considered, where options for the women are concerned.

Hi everyone, I hope you're doing good with the pandemic 😛

I uninstalled long ago. The age is starting to show... And unfortunately, not enough resources were put into the customization system. I say this lightly because people work behind the scenes. I hope GTA 6 will be bounds better.

speaking of, saints row 3 is being remastered. I will be revisiting it when it releases later this month. SR is the superior series when it comes to customization for sure. For the time period (2011) they had three stores. A serious store - planet saints, an emo store and a let's pretend cosplay store..

they had less things to worry about, with SR3 being pretty linear, but still..

There's a store that advertises on the in game Internet called Universal Uniform. They advertise bodysuits, leotards, unitards, and other things. WHY can't we buy this stuff? This website has been there since I first started playing online on the 360.

I am playing on the XBox One S now btw.

Was watching the Princess Bubblegum cartoon on the TV the other night. My character needs her hot pink bikini. NOW!!!

Yup - May 22nd. And what's really impressive is that it's actually a semi-remake: instead of Deep Silver getting one of their smaller first-party studios to just port it to current-gen consoles (which is what Fishlabs did for the recent Switch versions of III and IV), they got a third-party developer (Sperasoft) to rework all the assets from the ground up. A more realistic/modern lighting solution, better effects for things like explosions, and higher-quality building texture, and other things you'd expect (similar to something like Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition), but what's really cool is that the vehicles have been completely redesigned to look more realistic and less cartoony, and ...same for ALL the NPCs (to the point where major characters look more like the concept art, now! :O).

The character creator updates are subtler - same items, same proportions for the face settings, but some minor changes to add detail, and the fabric textures are more realistic, less plastic-y. Looking forward to remaking my trusty Boss from IV with the new visuals (although with a slightly worse hairdo, because I'd forgotten that Saints Row IV did a good job in adding more hairstyle variety, and therefore III Remastered won't have those... :sigh:).

It's similar to how GTA V did better than Online with clothing stores - there's actually a point to visiting Ponsonbys specifically in single-player, because you can't get a formal suit from Binco, whereas in GTAO (and RDO, too), all of that has been streamlined away. There is stuff exclusive to the Casino store, but that's more as a way to incentivise visiting the Casino (because you can only buy the stuff using chips) as a player, rather than an attempt to treat the game world like a believable place.

But then, it always amuses me to consider that Saints Row, for all the potential for daftness, still managed more granular character cosmetics (you can layer items, and choose your exact style of underwear - !!) and vehicle customisation (everything from interior trim colour to rim size, on pretty much every vehicle that'll allow mods) as far back as the original game, just two years after GTA San Andreas - and the option to have a playable female character (with better clothing/hairstyle options than GTAO, even after over six years...) as early as SR2 in 2008.

Even with the caveat that III is probably the weakest in the series for character customisation, I can't wait to jump back into a version with more modern visual pizzazz - and what really has me excited is this: if Deep Silver figured it worth committing to giving III a more realistic, high-fidelity current-gen makeover (rather than just a bump up to 1080p, like IV Re-Elected), all while they've still got Volition working on the next full Saints Row game, then ...how much better still is Saints Row 5 going to look? :panic:

Unfortunately this is a trend that the whole industry share, nowdays it s more about how many facial hairs you can see on your character than bold clothes customization, hell even coming up online to read some comments you would find people antagonizing the customization part of the game in question.

That being said, I don t consider SR3 or 4 games with a good clothes system, in fact there s no layering in it (even underwear gets hidden on most clothes where it should appear) and in those games in particular there s always the tease of npc having unobtainable and sometimes better clothes compared to what s avaible to the player character; in short, not much to get excited about.

At the end of the day, we got 2 games in 12 or so years with good layering clothing, Saints row 2 and Sunset Overdrive, which aren t perfect by any means but they could have provided a good starting point.

If i m being honest, I don t see it as a good trend going forward, in a world where cost cutting and efficiency are priority for a game studio, clothes customization will always get the short end of the stick.

That's where I'm hopeful about Saints Row 5 - considering that it's coming as an ostensible return to form after Agents of Mayhem didn't take off, and it needs to be more than just 'what if more of the same Saints Row, but with a more detailed current-gen makeover?' (because SR3 Remastered now has that covered), you'd think that Volition would aim to make it the new high point of the series, by embracing and expanding on all the stuff that Saints Row has done well in the past. For example, character customisation wouldn't necessarily need to be more involved than in SR2 - just have SR2 levels of incremental tweaking (why yes, I do want to have individually-customised socks, thankyouverymuch! :beerhat:), SR4's hairstyle variety, and asset quality at least on a par with SR3R, and that'd automatically make it the best character creator in any Saints Row game (and one of the best in games overall!).

We'll see - there was supposed to be some kind of official announcement for SR5 this year (Volition has confirmed that the game has long been in development, so I'm assuming either a title card tease or some other first promo thing), although in these current times, it's impossible to say whether or not that's still on the cards.

Still, it's kinda sad that the only reason why I'm holding out hope for SR5 to deliver is because Saints Row is one of the few games to bother with that approach to clothing/customisation at all, even though the later games scaled that back. I.e., not because games have gotten advanced enough to allow for realistic clothing systems to become the norm, but because one series consistently featured it as far back as 14 years ago... :turn:

I will say, if SR5 becomes another T2 microtransaction fest, I'm not sure if it'll be worth playing at that point.

I'm not suggesting that it's all bad, because you can get some half decent outfits, but I totally get why many are complaining about how the NPCs have a lot of cool clothing and options that aren't available to players.

I understand why there's a lot of combat outfits, which is great, but this is a game after all; we aren't doing jobs and working all the time. We need to have a good selection of casual clothing too.

Further to my previous post, it also turns out that the regular visitors to nightclubs and the Diamond Casino have nail polish options. The ladies there also have more outfits with tights and less strappy heels. All of which unavailable to players, of course.

Goddammit R* is it really that hard to add nail polish or good heeled knee/calf high boots that work with pants or any of the other things on this thread?!

Unironically, yes. It's harder than it should because the layering is beyond f*cked and R*ckstar never thought of future proofing. If they wanted to add nail polish they'd need to add them as "uppr" options in the game files (the ones used for gloves and torso layering). That could be possible if they added six models with, say, 16 different skins each. It would need to be six as each one would be assigned according to your character's skin color, but that wouldn't be the end of it. They'd need enough variations for t-shirts, jackets, vests, off-shoulder tops, half arms, cropped jacket and that's about 15 different models, and remember there were six to cover each color skin? Well, that's 60 models with 16 variations each, and that's about 900 files.

Why this would have to happen is that the character models always load a particular color skin, so in order to have a variation with nail polish they'd need to either create a new one that can be switched with the original so we're not forced to one nail polish option or just go with the easier, but heavier route, and we know what they'd do. Anyway, if torso options aren't happening there are alternatives.

Use the "teef" or "hand" layers, which are used for accessories (and this one is so f*cked up that it causes a ton of compatibility issues) and parachute/duffel bags respectively. They could add a new model that is attached to the hands, like different sized nails. This one could be easier, but if they were added as accessories then suddenly they'd be incompatible with necklaces, chains, scarfs and bracelets. If they were added on the same category as parachutes then they'd need to make them so wind options don't make them fly around and cause clipping issues, plus incompatibility.

So we're left with earring and wrist options. Again, sudden imcompatibility, but at least it wouldn't be as bad. In the end the problem is that R*ckstar never added a couple more layering options for cases like this, so the whole thing is limited thanks to their own coding.

Best thing we could get now is duplicating some clothes into different categories and simply moving male clothing options for female characters: hair, jackets, shoes... both models are rigged exactly the same, and in some cases those can be ported directly and they work without any issue whatsoever:

WmL5wN4.jpg

Some other examples are a bit more rough, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a day of reworking it:

7eNLCNf.jpg

HfShbHH.jpg

Aside that, there's no chance for what people ask. At this point I'd be surprised if they still have actual 3D modelers working on GTAO instead of people who just port and re-rig existing models
