Map disappears, can't use cell phone, and can't switch charact

So, first of all, forgive me if I am using the wrong terminology or something for this game. I'm not a fan of GTA myself, but my nephew is, but he doesn't have a computer so he's unable to make an account like this for himself. Therefore, he asked me to write this for him.

 

Anyways, he's been upset because for whatever reason, in GTA V on his xbox, it will suddenly not let him switch between characters. The map in the bottom left disappears too. It will let him open the cell phone, but not let him click anything on it. It's really weird.

 

I've searched up issues like this before, but nothing really helped. Thank you in advance.
