Olympics: General Discussion

I like Baseball being back. Not that we'll actually see the best players. I doubt MLB players will be allowed to participate.

Skateboarding and surfing have proven their longevity, and deserve to be there. Those people the article showed complaining about squash or whatever, can f*ck right off. I just wish they added skateboarding 15-20 years back so Tony Hawk could've participated.

I like more disciplines, should be more and more over the years, good choices too.

Looking forward to these Olympics!

It was great but you could tell the budget.

If you need to use f'cking trees for the Olympic rings you shouldn't be hosting.

It was also disgusting when the stage designer said "We have problems but you shouldn't care just have fun"

I found that during the opening ceremonies last night that the camera person was doing a terrible job and kept zooming in to close and didn't pan out to see the whole country's team march into the stadium long enough and the CBC Canada went to commercial's to often and during crucial parts of the opening!..

The Olympics are great for watching sports I usually never watch. Currently watching women's hockey (football could take a hint or two with how they work with video umpires), and also watched a bit of fencing earlier.

Damn, Annemiek van Vleuten's crash in the women's cycling road race is one of the most horrific-looking crashes I've ever seen. Seriously thought she might have suffered a broken neck or worse as she lay there motionless at the side of the road, but according to reports she's conscious and not seriously hurt.

Only caught the final sprint but watching the replay that was seriously gnarly stuff. Still great to see the first Dutch medal of these games, and couldn't have been a better start with gold, top job of Anna van der Breggen.

US men's rugby team absolutely demolished Brazil 26-0, there're some NFL players on the team so this should help Rugby gain steam in the US!

and GBR's mens field hockey beat Brazil 1-9, geez cmon Brazil.

Probably the most interesting event of these Olympics so far took place a few days ago in archery women's individual in Nagamine - Dos Santos match. The score was 3-5 before the final set and Japanese was in front with 18-12, so her shooting a 5 will have made it to tie-break. However, she shot only 1 and got eliminated just after Brazilian shot a whopping 10. I know that wind can be a strong determinant sometimes in this sport, but this was relentless rather than weird.

Man, it's not been le Clos' year. First beaten by that arrogant Chinese drug cheat and then losing out on a medal completely by finishing 4th in the 200m butterfly, the event which he won in 2012.

Hopefully he can bounce back in the 100m later today.

Not been the best year for the rest of our swimmers either, although they've won our only two medals so far.

Our rowers can still win gold (fingers crossed for no more delays because of the weather), our sevens rugby team is one win away from guaranteed gold or silver, and then maybe team SA can do something once the athletics gets underway. Other than that I can't see us winning medals anywhere else.

Anyway, loving the canoeing again this year. Like raaaavi said, it's one of those sports I won't usually watch and I only see it during the olympics. Been watching all the slalom events and looking forward to the sprints as well (who knows, we might even get another medal in the women's race like in 2012).

E: another silver thanks to our rowers. Hoping for at least one gold this year

RSA! RSA! RSA!

Penalty kicks in women's soccer US vs Sweden.

This is exciting.

Edit: US blew it.

She proves time and time again that she's not that nice of a person.

Anyway, I joke about women's beach volleyball, and the bikini bottoms, and occasional big busted volleyballer, but it's probably the most exciting sport in the Olympics, in my opinion. Brazil, who is the top ranked team, just played Switzerland, who is a good team, but not expected to medal, and they took it to three sets. One of the sets ended 27-25. It's a sport I wish had more exposure outside of the Olympics.
